If you run into issues with the online system or your claim gets stuck in adjudication, I had success using claimyr.com to actually get through to a NYS Department of Labor agent by phone. They have this video demo (https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI) that shows how it works. Saved me weeks of trying to call on my own when my claim was pending for forever.
You should definitely consider getting a lawyer especially if there's money involved. My brother tried to do his appeal alone and lost even though he had a good case. Sometimes it's worth the cost to have someone who knows the system.
I had a nightmare trying to get my 1099-G from NYS Department of Labor last year. The website kept crashing and when I called they said I had to wait for it to be mailed. If you still can't find yours online, you might need to call them directly. I used a service called claimyr.com that helped me get through to an actual agent - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of busy signals.
I had a similar situation last year when my company downsized. I was worried about the same thing and actually called my old manager to ask. She told me not to worry about it at all and that they expected people to file for unemployment after the layoffs. If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor directly about questions like this, I recently discovered a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to actual agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really helpful when you need to talk to someone at NYS Department of Labor but can't get through on your own.

The unemployment system is designed to make you feel like you're failing even when you're doing everything right. Those statistics don't account for people who have to take jobs that pay way less than their previous position just to get off unemployment. NYS Department of Labor counts that as a 'success' but is it really?

•I understand the frustration but the data does show most people find comparable employment within 6 months. It's not perfect but the system does work for the majority of claimants.

Same boat here, been on UI for 10 weeks. My caseworker told me the average in NY is around 16 weeks but that varies a lot by field. What industry are you in?

•I'm in marketing/communications. Feels like every job posting has 200+ applicants these days.
