Been there! When I got laid off from my restaurant job last year it was super overwhelming at first. The key thing is don't delay filing even if you're confused about something. You can always call later to clarify details but you need to get that initial claim in. Also make sure you certify for benefits every week even if your claim is still pending - missing a week can mess up your whole timeline.
One more thing - if your claim goes into adjudication (which means they need to verify something about your eligibility), don't panic. It's pretty common and just means they're reviewing your case. It can take a few weeks but as long as you were honestly laid off and not fired for misconduct, you should be fine.
Adjudication just means NYS Department of Labor is reviewing your claim to verify you meet all the eligibility requirements. It's not bad, just a standard review process. They might contact your former employer to confirm the reason for separation. Just be patient and respond promptly to any requests for information.
I think Hawaii might actually have higher benefits but don't quote me on that. The whole system varies so much state to state it's crazy
Just to clarify - while NY has high maximum benefits, what you actually receive is calculated as a percentage of your average weekly wage during your base period. The $504 is only if you were earning around $1,300+ per week consistently. Most people get somewhere between $200-400 weekly.
wait so you can really refuse jobs that pay less?? I thought you had to take whatever you could get or they'd cut off your benefits. this is good to know
The whole unemployment system is so confusing and they make it seem like you're doing something wrong for even filing. I've been dealing with issues for months and every time I call I get hung up on or transferred to nowhere. It's like they don't want to help people who actually need the benefits they paid into.
just make sure ur doing ur job search requirements too or they'll cut u off before the 26 weeks. u gotta prove ur looking for work every week

I had a nightmare trying to reach anyone at NYS Department of Labor about my denial. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to a real person who explained exactly why I was denied and what I needed for my appeal. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Ended up being way easier than the endless phone tree.

•That sounds too good to be true. How much does something like that cost?

•They focus on just getting you connected to the right person rather than giving advice. Was worth it for me since I was getting nowhere on my own.

The whole system is rigged against workers anyway. They'll deny you for breathing wrong then make you jump through hoops to prove you deserve benefits you already paid into. Document everything but don't get your hopes up - they rarely overturn these decisions even when you're obviously right.

•Actually appeal success rates are higher than most people think, especially for voluntary separation cases where there's clear documentation of workplace issues. The key is presenting evidence properly.
