welcome to NY! yes we have UI benefits and they're actually pretty good compared to some states... just be patient with the system
Just wanted to add that when you file your interstate claim, make sure you have all your wage information from your previous state employer handy - pay stubs, W-2s, etc. The NYS Department of Labor will need to request your wage records from the other state, and having your documentation ready can help speed things up if there are any discrepancies. Also, don't forget to certify for benefits weekly once your claim is approved, even if you're still waiting for the interstate verification to complete. Good luck with your claim!
Wait I thought there was some kind of offset? Like if you make too much from social security they reduce your unemployment? Or maybe that's a different state... this stuff gets so confusing with all the different rules
Just wanted to add that you'll still need to certify that you're able and available for work each week, even while getting social security. Some people think being on SS means you don't have to be available for work but that's not true for unemployment benefits. You need to show you're actively seeking employment and can accept suitable work if offered.
The system is honestly pretty fair when you think about it. Employees and employers both contribute, and then when people lose their jobs through no fault of their own, there's money available for benefits. Much better than some states where it's harder to qualify or the benefits run out faster.
Been dealing with this stuff for years and honestly the hardest part is getting through to NYS Department of Labor when you have questions about claims or need to dispute something. Their phone lines are always jammed. I finally started using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that gets you connected to actual agents without the endless hold times. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of frustration.

honestly the whole system is so confusing, I tried calling NYS Department of Labor like 50 times to ask about this exact situation and could never get through to talk to an actual person. their website just gives you the basic info but doesn't cover these gray area cases

•I had the same problem trying to reach someone at NYS Department of Labor about my complicated situation. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to a real agent. They have this video demo (https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI) showing how it works. Saved me weeks of trying to call myself and I was able to get my specific retirement/UI question answered directly.

This is so frustrating!! Why can't they just have clear rules about this stuff? Like if you worked for almost 30 years you should be able to get something to help with the gap. The system is broken.

•I understand the frustration, but the rules exist to prevent people from using UI as a bridge to retirement rather than genuine unemployment assistance. The program is designed for people who lose their jobs involuntarily and are actively seeking new employment.
