This is like the THIRD time this has happened in the past 2 months! They really need to upgrade their system but you know they never will. I've found that if you try certifying very early in the morning (like 6am) or late at night (after 10pm) the system works way better with fewer glitches.

Make sure to check if your eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit! it might help offset some of the taxes you owe on unemployment. The income thresholds and credit amounts increased for 2021.
I called the ny unemployment office and after waiting 2.5 hours they confirmed all unemployment income is fully taxable now. The exemption was only for 2020. I hate it here 😤

Not to be that person, but like... why didn't you research unemployment benefits when you lost your job? That's literally the first thing most people do. All this info is on the NY unemployment website.
That's a little harsh. The NY unemployment website is notoriously confusing and the rules about partial benefits are buried in pages of technical language. Most people don't know about this option.
Fair point. Sorry if I came across as judgmental. The system definitely doesn't make it easy to understand everything.

A writen mandamus? is that like a court order? idk much about legal stuff but that seems like a lot of work when you could just hire one of those unemployment advocates. My sister used one and they handled everything for her
It's "writ" not "written" lol. And unemployment advocates charge like 30% of your benefits... not worth it imo

Stories like this both give me hope and make me angry. Glad your daughter got paid but it's ridiculous we have to jump through so many hoops for benefits we've earned. The nysdol treats everyone like they're trying to commit fraud instead of just helping people who need it.
