Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. Has anyone successfully reached a real person at ny unemployment for backpay issues?

Been trying to get my backpay from ny unemployment since October 2023 and it's now February. I got laid off from my construction job back in August and filed right away. They approved me for regular benefits but never paid the first 6 weeks I was owed. Every time I call the main number it's just automated messages or they hang up after 2 hours on hold. I've tried emailing through the portal 5 different times and never get any response except automated confirmation emails. I've sent in all the documents they asked for including pay stubs from my last job. My account shows 'pending' for those weeks but it's been months now with nothing changing. I'm about $2830 behind on rent and my landlord is threatening eviction. Anyone know a direct number to talk to an actual human being who can help? Or any way to actually get them to process backpay claims? I'm beyond frustrated at this point.

try the callback feature on their website. i requested a callback and actually got one... 3 weeks later 🙄 but at least I eventually got to talk to someone

Pssst... here's a secret most people don't know: if you file a formal complaint with the NY State Attorney General's office about your unemployment claim, DOL has to respond within 10 business days by law. Weird email from ny unemployment about identity fraud - should I panic?

My coworker just forwarded me a concerning email from the Department of Labor that he got yesterday. It says something about identity fraud being detected on his account and they suspended his payments until he verifies his identity. Problem is, he hasn't even filed for unemployment benefits in over 2 years! He's been working full-time at our shop since 2021. The email looks kinda official with the NY state logo but has some weird formatting issues. It asks him to call some number to verify his identity and mentions potential criminal charges if someone else is using his identity to collect benefits. Has anyone dealt with something similar? I'm trying to help him figure out what to do next since he's freaking out about his social security number being stolen. Should he call the number in the email or is this just a scam?

Hey I had this EXACT SAME THING happen in February!!! I couldn't reach anyone at DOL for days. LOL welcome to the club nobody wants to join! I've been fighting this since November - someone's been collecting $536 a week in my name since October even though I have a full time job. The worst part is DOL treats YOU like the criminal at first. Make sure your friend has all his employment records ready to prove he's been working. And be ready for this to take MONTHS to resolve completely.

NY unemployment sent identical 1099-G forms for 2022 and 2023 to my daughter - tax nightmare

My daughter got her 1099-G for unemployment benefits and noticed something weird. The form for 2023 shows exactly the same amounts as her 2022 form. Same box 1 amount ($6,840) and same tax withholding ($684). This is impossible because she only collected benefits for about 2 months in 2023 vs almost 7 months in 2022. Called the ny unemployment office several times but can't get through to anyone. Tried emailing through their contact form three weeks ago but no response yet. She's trying to file her taxes and doesn't know what to report! Has anyone else had this duplicate 1099 issue? What did you do to fix it?

CALL THE ADVOCATE OFFICE!! Regular customer service won't help. The advocate office number is (855) 528-5618. They specialize in difficult cases and tax issues. Took me 3 days but I finally got my corrected 1099.

My tax accountant said this is happening with several clients. He recommends filing with the correct amounts (based on your payment history record) and attaching a letter explaining the situation. If you get a notice from the IRS later, you'll have documentation to respond.

Applied for NY unemployment in August but stuck in limbo for 5 months - worked at same job for 7 years!

I was laid off from my manufacturing job back in August after working there for 7 years. Applied for unemployment benefits right away but got denied because they claimed I didn't make enough in my base period. That made no sense since I'd been at the same place for so long with steady income. I sent in all the wage documentation they requested to prove my income history. Now my claim status just says 'under review to determine benefit amount' and has been saying that for almost 5 months! I've been out of work since August and savings are running dry. Called the ny unemployment office like 25 times but can never get through to a human. Anyone know how to actually get this resolved or at least talk to someone who can explain what's happening?

make SURE you download and save every single piece of correspondence they send you. my husband's claim suddenly said he needed to submit docs he'd already sent 3 times. thankfully we had confirmations of everything.

Got weird texts from NY unemployment about password reset - is this a scam?

Yesterday around midnight I got a couple of texts that looked like they were from the unemployment office saying someone requested a password reset for my account. I never asked for this! I checked my account this morning and everything seemed normal, but then I noticed there was a new payment method added that I definitely didn't set up. Called the fraud line but was on hold for like 2 hours and got disconnected. Tried calling back multiple times but can't get through. I'm freaking out because I'm worried someone might be trying to steal my weekly payments. Has anyone dealt with this before? Did someone hack into my account? Should I just keep calling the fraud department? I'm also worried they might have my social security number now.
