Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. The whole system is ridiculous honestly. You pay into unemployment insurance your whole working life and then when you actually need it during a major life event they make you jump through hoops to prove you're 'worthy' of benefits. I hope you figure it out but prepare for a lot of bureaucratic runaround.

Wait I'm confused - are you saying they can make us take classes? I thought we just had to look for work and that was it. My cousin said something about them requiring computer classes but I figured that was just for certain people...
NYS Department of Labor can refer you to training programs but they can't force you to enroll in most cases. However, refusing reasonable retraining opportunities without good cause could potentially affect your benefits. It's usually presented as an option to help you find work faster.

LOW unemployment is actually BAD for people collecting benefits because employers get pickier and expect you to take any job even if it's terrible pay or not in your field. The whole system assumes if unemployment is low then anyone can find work which isnt true!!
I feel this so much. Everyone acts like I should just take any minimum wage job even though I worked in accounting for 8 years before getting laid off.

Just be patient, the system works but it's slow. I got my first payment exactly 3 weeks after filing. The waiting is the worst part but once it starts the payments come regularly every week.

UGH the NYS Department of Labor is THE WORST with communication! They leave you hanging with zero updates and expect you to just wait indefinitely. I swear they do this on purpose to discourage people from claiming benefits they're entitled to!!
