The whole adjudication system is a joke honestly. They make you wait forever just to verify obvious stuff. Like if your employer reports you were laid off, why does it take 2 months to confirm that?? It's just another way for NYS Department of Labor to delay paying out benefits and save money.
same boat here! been in adjudication for 4 weeks after getting fired. well not fired exactly but they said i violated company policy by being late too many times. im worried thats going to count as misconduct even though i had a good reason (car troubles). anyone know if transportation issues count as good cause?
Transportation difficulties can potentially be considered good cause, but it depends on the specific circumstances and whether you made efforts to resolve the issue or notify your employer. You might want to gather documentation about your car problems and any communication with your employer about the attendance issues.
If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to file your claim, I had success using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Really saved me time instead of calling over and over trying to get through the busy phone lines.
The only thing that's 'bad' about collecting unemployment is how hard they make it sometimes! The NYS Department of Labor system can be confusing and the phone lines are always busy. But morally? Ethically? You're using a program you paid into. That's like feeling bad about using your car insurance after an accident. Don't let anyone make you feel guilty for using benefits you're entitled to.
If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor for historical data or any current claim issues, I had success using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to actual agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Might be helpful if you need to verify specific data points directly with someone at the department.
The unemployment system was SO much different pre-pandemic. Like, people actually complained when their weekly claims took more than a few days to process. Now everyone's used to waiting weeks for adjudication. Those 2017 numbers seem almost quaint compared to what we went through in 2020-2021 when everyone was filing for UI benefits.
Wait I'm confused... I thought if you retire you get a pension or 401k? Why would you need unemployment? Isn't that like double dipping?

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor by phone to ask questions, I recently found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. I was stuck trying to reach someone about my claim status for weeks before using it.

•The NYS Department of Labor phone system is absolutely terrible. I've been hung up on so many times. Might have to check that out if I run into issues with my claim.

Just to add - while most stuff is online, there are still American Job Centers (formerly called One-Stop Career Centers) around the state if you need help with job searching or using computers. But for unemployment benefits specifically, yeah it's all through the NYS Department of Labor website. Don't let anyone tell you that you HAVE to go somewhere in person for your UI claim.
