Make sure he meets all the job search requirements too! Even though he's on disability, if he's collecting unemployment he still needs to be actively looking for work and documenting it. The NYS Department of Labor doesn't care about your other benefits when it comes to the work search requirement.
Good point! Since he can only work part-time due to his disability, can he limit his job search to part-time positions only?
Yes, absolutely. When you register for job search activities, you can specify that you're only available for part-time work due to medical limitations. Just make sure to document everything properly in your work search log.
This whole system is so confusing. Why can't they just have clear answers on their website about these common situations? I swear the NYS Department of Labor makes everything more complicated than it needs to be.
Don't romanticize it too much though. The 1950s had limited opportunities for women and minorities, and job security was tied to specific industries. When those industries declined in the 70s and 80s, NYS Department of Labor saw massive unemployment spikes. Today's diverse economy is actually more resilient, even if individual claims are more complicated.
If you're having trouble with current NYS Department of Labor processes while researching this stuff, I found claimyr.com super helpful for actually getting through to agents when I needed claim status updates. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Way easier than trying to call during peak hours.
Thanks for the tip! I'm not filing claims right now but that could be useful for my research if I need to speak with someone at NYS Department of Labor about historical data access.
If your cousin is having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to understand her denial, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really helped me understand why my claim was initially flagged and what I needed to do to fix it. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to sort these things out.
The system is SO unfair. They deny people for the stupidest reasons and then make you jump through hoops to appeal. I know someone who got denied because they marked that they were 'available for part-time work only' thinking it would help them get something faster, but apparently that disqualifies you completely. You have to be available for full-time work even if you don't want it.
Wait really? You can't say you only want part-time? That seems backwards.
I've heard they're super backed up because of all the fraud cases they're dealing with. Doesn't make the wait any easier tho 😑
Yeah, I read about that too. Apparently, they're implementing new verification processes which is slowing everything down.
Pro tip: if u can, apply for other assistance programs while u wait. Food banks, rental assistance, etc. Every little bit helps when ur in limbo
This! 💯 I started using my local food bank and it's been a lifesaver. Don't be too proud to ask for help, y'all.

Make sure you apply as soon as you lose your job! There's a waiting week but benefits are backdated to when you first file. Don't wait thinking you'll find something quickly because the job market is rough right now.

The system is so broken. They denied my claim initially even though I had all the right documentation. Had to appeal and it took 2 months to get resolved. Start gathering your paperwork now so you're ready.

•That sounds terrifying. What kind of documentation should I be keeping from my current job?

•Keep pay stubs, any written schedules, emails about work changes, and if you do get terminated, ask for the separation notice in writing. Having everything documented makes the process smoother.
