The system is designed so employers aren't paying benefits directly but you're still funding it through the UI tax system. If you have trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor about your tax rate or have questions about claims filed against your account, I used claimyr.com recently and they got me through to an agent really quickly. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.
same thing happened to my cousin but it turned out to be nothing major. just had to resubmit some paperwork and everything was fine
The important thing is to respond to the rework requirement promptly. NYS Department of Labor gives you a deadline (usually 10-30 days) to complete whatever they're asking for. If you miss the deadline, your claim could be suspended. Keep filing your weekly claims in the meantime and document everything you submit. Save copies of all correspondence and take screenshots of your online submissions.
Manufacturing jobs are tough to replace nowadays. I was in a similar situation a few years back and it took me almost the full 26 weeks to find something decent. Don't get discouraged if it takes longer than expected - the job market for experienced workers can be challenging. Just make sure you're documenting all your job search activities because NYS Department of Labor can audit that stuff.
OMG this is exactly what I needed to know! I'm in week 3 of unemployment and getting super anxious about running out of money. 26 weeks seems reasonable but not great... do they ever extend it if there's like a recession or something??
From an economic perspective, structural unemployment is considered the most serious because it represents permanent changes in the labor market rather than temporary fluctuations. It typically lasts longer and requires more intervention to resolve. NYS Department of Labor recognizes this and has specific programs for structurally unemployed workers including Trade Adjustment Assistance if your job loss was trade-related.

Just remember the 26 weeks is the MAXIMUM. If you find a job before then or if there are any issues with your claim, it could be shorter. Also if you refuse suitable work or don't meet the weekly requirements, NYS Department of Labor can disqualify you.

26 weeks seems like nothing when you're actually looking for work in this job market! Took me 8 months to find something decent last time I was unemployed.

•That's why it's important to start your job search immediately and not wait. The 26 weeks goes by faster than you think, especially if you're being selective about positions.
