I had trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor when I needed clarification on my benefit type. Spent hours on hold trying to speak with someone about whether my temporary layoff qualified for standby or regular UI. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Made the whole process way easier than sitting on hold all day.
The economic types are just academic theory - frictional (between jobs), structural (skills mismatch), cyclical (recession-related), seasonal (temporary work), and institutional (government policies affecting employment). For your NYS Department of Labor claim, none of that matters. You file based on your work separation reason and current employment status, not economic theory categories.
Just wanted to say good luck OP! I was in a similar situation last year and it worked out fine. The key is to be honest about what happened but don't admit to any wrongdoing if you don't think you did anything wrong.
Here's what you need to know: NYS Department of Labor will contact your employer to get their side of the story. Document everything you can remember about the termination - dates, what was said, any witnesses. If they deny your claim based on misconduct, you have the right to appeal and request a hearing where you can present your case.
I had trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor when I had questions about reporting work. If you need to speak with someone about your specific situation, I found claimyr.com really helpful. They have a service that gets you through to actual NYS Department of Labor agents instead of waiting on hold forever. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.
The whole system is so confusing! I've been trying to call NYS Department of Labor for two weeks to ask the same question but can never get through. The phone lines are always busy and when I do get on hold, they disconnect me after an hour. How is anyone supposed to figure this out?
I had the same problem with their phone system being impossible to reach. I actually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to unemployment agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Basically they handle the calling and waiting for you, then conference you in when they reach an agent. Used it last month to sort out an adjudication issue and got through in about 30 minutes instead of wasting whole days calling myself.
Just to add - make sure you file your weekly claim by the deadline each week or you'll miss that week's payment entirely. I think the cutoff is usually Tuesday night but double check on the site. Also don't file too early in the week or it might not process correctly.

UGH the NYS Department of Labor system is SO SLOW. I've been waiting 3 weeks and my claim is STILL in adjudication because my former employer is disputing something. They make it impossible to reach anyone and then act like it's your fault when you can't pay rent!!!

•That's so frustrating! Adjudication can definitely add extra time to the process, especially if there's an employer dispute involved.

I remember when I first filed it felt like forever but looking back it was only like 2.5 weeks total. The waiting is the worst part especially when you have bills piling up. Hang in there!
