NYS Department of Labor unemployment benefits how long does it take to get first payment?

I just filed my unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor last Tuesday and I'm wondering how long it typically takes to receive the first payment? I've been checking my.ny.gov portal constantly but it still shows 'pending' status. I read somewhere it could take 2-3 weeks but that seems really long when I have rent due next week. Has anyone recently gone through this process? How long did it actually take for you to get your first UI payment after filing?

The standard timeframe for NYS Department of Labor to process new claims is typically 2-3 weeks from when you first file, assuming there are no issues that require adjudication. Your first payment usually comes about a week after your claim is approved. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while it's pending - you won't get paid for any weeks you don't certify for benefits.

Thanks! I have been doing my weekly claims. Should I be worried that it's still showing pending after a week?

mine took exactly 18 days last month but i know some people who waited over a month if they had to go through adjudication for any reason

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to check on your claim status, I used a service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual agent. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. It was super helpful when I was stuck in adjudication limbo and couldn't get answers about my delays.

How much does something like that cost? I'm already broke waiting for my benefits to start.

It was worth it for me because I was able to get clarity on what was holding up my claim. Sometimes just knowing what the issue is can help you fix it faster.

The whole NYS Department of Labor system is a JOKE. They make you jump through hoops for weeks while you're trying to pay bills and survive. Two to three weeks is ridiculous when people need money immediately after losing their job. Other states process claims much faster but NY seems to enjoy making people suffer.

I feel you on the frustration but honestly 2-3 weeks isn't that unusual compared to what I've heard from friends in other places

Just want to add that if you had any separation issues like being fired or quitting, that's when it takes longer because they have to do an adjudication review. Also make sure your employer responded to their inquiry - sometimes delays happen because the employer doesn't send back their paperwork to NYS Department of Labor on time.
