Wait I'm confused about this too. If I'm having trouble even getting through to NYS Department of Labor to resolve an issue with my claim, how am I supposed to handle the tax stuff? I've been trying to call for weeks about an adjudication issue and can't reach anyone.
I had the same problem calling NYS Department of Labor until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that helps you actually get through to a real person at the unemployment office. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I was able to get my adjudication resolved in two days after being stuck for a month.
Just want to add that even though federal unemployment tax (FUTA) is paid by employers, your unemployment benefits are still considered taxable income by the IRS. So definitely either have the 10% withheld or set aside money for taxes. The 1099-G from NYS Department of Labor will show exactly what you received for the year.
Wait so if they contest it does that mean I don't get any money while they investigate?? I can't afford to go weeks without income while NYS Department of Labor decides who's telling the truth. This is making me even more anxious about my job situation.
The whole system is rigged anyway. Employers know exactly what to say to get claims denied and NYS Department of Labor just rubber stamps whatever the company tells them. I've seen people with legitimate claims get screwed over because their boss knew how to work the system.
THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS RIGGED ANYWAY!!! They raise wages then businesses fire people then we all end up on unemployment fighting over scraps while politicians pat themselves on the back. I've been dealing with NYS Department of Labor for months and they don't care about the real causes of unemployment.
Wait I thought unemployment was only 20 weeks? Or maybe that was the old rules? I collected back in 2019 and I swear it was different. This whole system changes so much I can never keep track of what's current.
Something to keep in mind - those 26 weeks start from when you first become eligible, not from when you file your claim. So if there are any delays in processing or if you have to go through adjudication, you don't get extra time added to the end. The clock is always ticking once your benefit year begins.
Oh wow, I didn't realize that. My claim is still in adjudication right now. Does that mean I'm losing weeks while they figure it out?

I was in a similar situation last year and honestly the 26 weeks went by faster than I expected. If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor by phone to ask questions about your claim, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really saved me when I had issues with my weekly claim getting stuck.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too - you need to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep detailed records. NYS Department of Labor is pretty strict about this stuff now.
