Does raising the minimum wage cause unemployment in NYS - worried about my claim status
I've been hearing a lot about minimum wage increases potentially causing job losses and I'm really stressed about this. I just filed for unemployment last week after my restaurant cut staff and I'm wondering if the recent minimum wage changes in NYS had anything to do with it. My manager mentioned something about labor costs when they let me go. Has anyone else been laid off recently and think it might be related to wage increases? I'm trying to understand if this will affect my NYS Department of Labor claim approval or if there will be more competition for jobs when I start my job search. My claim is still pending and I'm getting anxious about everything.

Your unemployment claim won't be affected by the reasons for your layoff as long as it wasn't for misconduct. The NYS Department of Labor evaluates eligibility based on your work history and earnings, not economic factors that led to your separation. Focus on filing your weekly claims correctly and meeting job search requirements rather than worrying about policy debates.

•Thanks, that's reassuring. I was worried they might deny my claim if the layoff was related to wage policy changes.

economists debate this stuff all the time but it doesn't matter for your UI claim... just make sure you're doing your job searches and logging them properly

I work in labor economics and while there are different perspectives on minimum wage effects, what matters for your situation is that you were involuntarily separated from employment. The NYS Department of Labor doesn't consider broader economic policy when adjudicating individual claims. Your eligibility depends on meeting base period earnings requirements and being able and available for work.

•This is exactly right. I had trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor agents to ask similar questions about my claim, but I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to speak with someone directly. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really helped me get answers faster than trying to call on my own.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS RIGGED ANYWAY!!! They raise wages then businesses fire people then we all end up on unemployment fighting over scraps while politicians pat themselves on the back. I've been dealing with NYS Department of Labor for months and they don't care about the real causes of unemployment.

•I get your frustration but let's try to help OP with their actual claim question.

Same thing happened at my cousin's job last month - they blamed wage costs for cutting hours. But honestly just focus on your weekly certification and job search log. The adjudication process doesn't care about the bigger picture stuff, just whether you qualify based on your work history.
