I've been trying to reach NYS Department of Labor for weeks about this same issue but their phone lines are always busy. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone about tax withholding questions? I keep getting disconnected after waiting 2+ hours.
I had the same problem until I found claimyr.com - they help you get through to NYS Department of Labor agents by phone. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Used it last month and got connected within 15 minutes to resolve my withholding setup.
honestly the whole system is messed up, you work your butt off and when you actually need help there's always some technicality why you don't qualify for anything. employers know exactly how to screw you over while staying within the law
Document EVERYTHING - every conversation with your employer, all medical records, any emails about your request for time off. If this goes to an unemployment hearing you'll need proof that you had no choice but to take the time off for medical reasons. The burden of proof is on you to show it wasn't a voluntary quit.
I was in a similar situation last year and had trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about my benefit calculation. The phone lines are always busy and I kept getting disconnected. I ended up using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent who explained exactly how my benefits were calculated. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Made the whole process way less stressful than trying to call repeatedly.
The whole system is so confusing! I got laid off 3 months ago and I'm still not 100% sure how they calculated my weekly amount. NYS Department of Labor sent me a monetary determination letter but the math doesn't seem right to me. I think they might have missed some of my wages from when I had two jobs last year.
If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to verify your wage information or ask questions about your calculation, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have this video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. It was super easy to use and I finally got answers about my weird wage situation where one employer hadn't reported correctly.

File immediately but make sure you have all your employment info ready. They'll ask for wages and dates for every job you had in the last 18 months. If you're missing info it can delay your claim. Also start looking for work right away because you'll need to certify that you're actively job searching when you file your weekly claims.

•Good point about the job search thing. How many jobs do I need to apply to per week? I heard it was 3 but I'm not sure if that's current.

•It's 3 job contacts per week in New York. You need to keep a log of where you applied, when, and what type of contact it was. They can ask to see this log at any time.

Just want to say good luck! Being laid off is tough but at least NY has decent unemployment benefits compared to some states. The process can be slow sometimes but hang in there.
