ugh the whole system is broken!! they denied my claim too when i had to quit to take care of my sick mom and it took forever to get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor to even explain the appeal process. i was calling for weeks!
If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor by phone, I had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Made it so much easier to get my appeal questions answered instead of sitting on hold for hours.
Wait, so there are different categories of unemployment? I thought unemployment was just unemployment. This whole time I've been wondering why some people get approved right away and others don't.
Yes, there are different types. Involuntary (laid off, fired without cause) usually gets approved quickly. Voluntary (you quit) requires proving 'good cause.' There's also stuff like structural unemployment, frictional unemployment, but those are economic terms - for NYS Department of Labor purposes, it's mainly about voluntary vs involuntary.
If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to get clarification on any disqualification issues, I had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to actually reach a live agent. They have a system that gets you connected without waiting on hold for hours. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really helped me understand why my initial claim got flagged for adjudication.
The system is honestly set up to reject people. I got disqualified because they said I 'voluntarily quit' when I actually had to leave due to unsafe working conditions during construction. Took me 3 months and an appeal hearing to get it overturned. NYS Department of Labor assumes the worst about every claim.
whatever you do dont just quit without having another job lined up!! the unemployment system is so messed up right now, even if you qualify it takes forever to get approved and the weekly benefit amount is probably way less than your salary
The NYS Department of Labor considers several factors for good cause including: unsafe working conditions, harassment, significant reduction in hours or pay, changes to job location that create hardship, and violation of labor laws by the employer. Document everything with dates and times. Also check if your employer has violated any wage and hour laws - unpaid overtime could strengthen your case significantly.
The unemployment system is such a joke. They make it impossible to get real information and then wonder why people are frustrated. I've been dealing with NYS Department of Labor for months and still can't get straight answers about anything.

Just went through this exact situation last month! Unemployment benefits absolutely do NOT affect your credit score or show up on credit reports. The only way unemployment could indirectly affect your credit is if you miss payments on existing debts because the benefit amount isn't covering your expenses. But the actual receipt of UI benefits is completely separate from credit reporting.

landlord here - we don't see unemployment benefits on background checks and honestly most of us understand that good tenants sometimes go through job transitions, as long as you can show you're actively looking for work and have some income coming in you should be fine

•That's really reassuring to hear from a landlord's perspective. I've been keeping detailed job search logs for NYS Department of Labor anyway so I can show I'm actively looking.
