Wrong W2 from company I never worked for - IRS holding refund hostage while investigating
Got hit with a tax bill because some random company filed a W2 saying I worked there in 2022. Already sent proof I wasnt employed there but IRS says theyre backlogged and have to hold my refund until the case gets reviewed. Anyone know how long this nightmare usually takes?

This is actually pretty common with identity theft cases. You need to file Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit) if you haven't already. The IRS typically takes 120-180 days to resolve these cases, but with current backlogs it could stretch longer. Make sure you've also contacted the company that issued the incorrect W2 and get documentation from them stating this was an error.
