Will an Offset Delay the Rest of My Refund Being Deposited?

Just received a Notice of Offset for my 2023 tax refund due to some outstanding business taxes from my LLC. The Treasury Offset Program (TOP) notification says they're taking $3,782 from my expected refund of $7,145. What I'm concerned about is whether this offset will delay the remaining portion ($3,363) from being deposited? My transcripts show code 898 but I'm not seeing a DDD yet. Has anyone experienced this? Will they process the remaining refund on the normal timeline or does the offset create additional processing delays?

I went through this exact situation last year. From my experience, the offset itself doesn't usually cause additional delays for the remaining portion of your refund. What typically happens is that the IRS processes your return normally, applies the offset amount to whatever debt was identified (in your case the business taxes), and then releases the remainder to you. In my case, I received the remaining portion about 7-10 days after getting the offset notice. I remember being so worried that I'd have to wait months, but it was actually pretty smooth once the offset was processed.

This is so helpful to hear! I've been absolutely panicking since getting that notice. I was worried they'd hold the entire refund for weeks or months while they sorted out the offset. It's a relief to know the remaining portion should still come through on a somewhat normal timeline. Did you get any additional notices before the remaining refund was deposited?

How does this compare to offsets for student loans? I've heard those can take longer to process because they go through the Department of Education first. Do business tax offsets move faster since it's all within the IRS system? My transcript shows similar codes but I'm trying to gauge if the timeframes might be different.

Have you checked your transcript for any other codes besides the 898? Sometimes there's a 571 code that follows which indicates the offset is complete. Also, do you know exactly which business taxes triggered the offset? Sometimes that makes a difference in processing time.

I'm concerned about this too - does the type of debt really affect how quickly they process the remaining refund? I thought once they flagged it for offset, the whole process followed the same timeline regardless of what the debt was for.

I had an offset for unpaid state taxes last year and found that checking my transcript daily was driving me crazy. Once I saw the 898 code, the remaining refund showed up in my account exactly 8 days later. The transcript updated with a DDD about 3 days before the deposit hit.

I believe I've also seen a code 776 on some transcripts, which I think might indicate the actual offset amount? At least that's what I gathered from reading through some IRS documentation, though I'm not 100% certain about this particular code's meaning.

I checked my transcript again this morning and I do see some additional codes now. There's a 776 dated 3/28/2024 for the $3,782 amount and a 290 code with $0.00 amount. Still no direct deposit date though. The debt was from underpaid quarterly estimated taxes for my business in 2022. I thought I had caught up on everything, but apparently I miscalculated. Really need that remaining refund soon for some equipment purchases.

Those codes are actually a good sign. The 776 confirms the offset amount and the 290 with $0.00 often indicates processing is moving forward. Have you received any official letters from the IRS about the offset besides what you saw on your transcript? Sometimes they send a formal notice explaining everything.

When I had an offset situation last year, I spent days trying to reach someone at the IRS to confirm when I'd get the remainder of my refund. After 14 attempts and hours on hold, I discovered Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c). They got me through to an actual IRS agent in about 25 minutes who confirmed my remaining refund was scheduled to be released within 5 business days. Totally worth it when you need definitive answers about offset timing rather than guessing based on transcript codes.

Has your Where's My Refund tool updated at all? In my experience with offsets, WMR sometimes shows different information than what appears on your transcript. The 898 code typically appears exactly 7 days before the remaining refund is scheduled for deposit, but that's not always consistent during peak filing season.

According to the IRS website (specifically Publication 1450 which covers the Treasury Offset Program), offsets should not cause significant delays to the remainder of your refund. The standard timeline states that once an offset is processed, the remaining refund follows the normal direct deposit schedule. However, if your offset was particularly large compared to your total refund (which yours is at over 50%), sometimes that triggers an additional review. The IRS's "Where's My Refund" tool should update within 3-5 business days after the offset processing is complete. I'd recommend checking it daily at this point.

To add to this excellent information, here's what typically happens with offsets step by step: 1. IRS processes your return normally until it's ready for refund 2. Before issuing refund, they check the Treasury Offset Program database 3. If a match is found, they flag your account (code 898) 4. They calculate the offset amount and apply it to the debt (code 776) 5. They adjust your account to reflect the reduced refund 6. The remaining amount is released for direct deposit In my experience, steps 3-6 typically happen within a 7-10 day window, but can take up to 14 days during peak season.

I had almost the exact same situation last tax season with a business tax offset. My refund was about $8,200 and they took $4,100 for a payroll tax issue I didn't even know about. I was worried about delays too, but the remaining $4,100 hit my account exactly 9 days after the offset notice appeared on my transcript. The thing that helped me most was watching for the 846 code to appear - that's the direct deposit code that shows both the amount and the date. Once I saw that, I knew exactly when to expect the money. Hope this helps ease your mind a bit!

I'm going through something similar right now! My refund was supposed to be $5,890 but they're offsetting $2,200 for some old student loan debt I thought was in forbearance. Just saw the 898 code appear on my transcript yesterday. Reading through everyone's experiences here is really reassuring - it sounds like most people get their remaining refund within 7-14 days after the offset codes show up. I've been checking my transcript obsessively but I think I need to be more patient. Has anyone here had experience specifically with Department of Education offsets versus IRS offsets? Wondering if there are any differences in processing time since mine involves a different agency.

Welcome to the offset club! I went through a Department of Education offset two years ago and from what I experienced, there can be slight differences in timing compared to IRS-only offsets. The DOE offsets sometimes take an extra 3-5 days because the Treasury has to coordinate between agencies, but it's not dramatically different. In my case, I saw the 898 code and got my remaining refund about 12 days later instead of the typical 7-10 days people report for IRS offsets. The key thing is that once you see that 898 code, the process is definitely moving forward. Keep checking for the 846 code like Jabari-Jo mentioned - that's your golden ticket showing the actual deposit date for the remainder. Try not to drive yourself crazy checking daily (easier said than done, I know!).

I'm dealing with a very similar situation right now - offset for unpaid business taxes from 2022 that I thought I had resolved. My refund was $6,200 and they're taking $2,800, leaving me with $3,400 remaining. I've been frantically checking my transcript since seeing the 898 code appear three days ago. Reading through everyone's experiences here is incredibly helpful and reassuring! It sounds like most people are getting their remaining refunds within that 7-14 day window after the offset codes show up. I'm particularly interested in what James mentioned about the 7-10 day timeline - that gives me hope since I really need that remaining money for payroll next week. Has anyone noticed if the day of the week when the 898 code appears affects when the remaining refund gets deposited? I saw mine on a Tuesday and I'm wondering if weekends slow down the processing at all.

Hi Ella! I'm new to dealing with offsets but from what I've been reading here, it seems like the day of the week when codes appear doesn't usually impact the overall timeline much. The IRS processes these things on business days, so if your 898 code showed up on a Tuesday, you're probably looking at getting your remaining refund sometime next week if the typical 7-10 day pattern holds. I'm actually in a very similar boat - waiting on an offset situation myself and trying not to obsessively check my transcript every few hours! One thing I've learned from this thread is to watch for that 846 code that shows the actual deposit date. Fingers crossed we both get good news soon!

I'm new to this community but currently dealing with my first offset situation and this thread has been incredibly helpful! My 2023 refund was supposed to be $4,850 but they're offsetting $1,900 for some old business employment taxes I apparently missed. I just saw the 898 code appear on my transcript yesterday morning and have been anxiously waiting to see what happens next. Reading everyone's experiences here gives me so much hope that the remaining $2,950 should come through in the next week or so. I was initially panicked thinking the whole refund would be held up for months, but it sounds like that's not typically the case. Thank you all for sharing your timelines and experiences - it's really helping ease my anxiety about this whole process! I'll keep checking for that 846 code everyone mentions and try to be patient.

Welcome to the community, Amara! I'm also pretty new to dealing with offsets and this thread has been a lifesaver for understanding what to expect. Your timeline sounds very similar to mine - I just saw my 898 code appear a few days ago and have been checking my transcript way too often! It's really reassuring to hear from everyone that the remaining portion typically comes through within that 7-14 day window. The employment tax offset situation sounds stressful, but from what I've gathered here, business tax offsets (which yours sounds like it falls under) tend to process pretty smoothly since it's all within the IRS system. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we both see that 846 code with a deposit date soon! Thanks for adding your experience to this thread - it helps to know others are going through the same thing right now.

I'm currently going through this exact same situation and this thread has been incredibly reassuring! My 2023 refund is $8,450 but they're offsetting $3,200 for some quarterly business taxes I apparently underpaid in 2022. I saw the 898 code appear on my transcript four days ago and have been anxiously waiting for any updates. Reading everyone's experiences here - especially James mentioning the 7-10 day timeline and Jabari-Jo's similar situation - gives me so much hope that my remaining $5,250 should hit my account soon. I was initially terrified that the offset would delay everything for months, but it sounds like that's not typically the case. I'll keep watching for that 846 code everyone mentions. Thank you all for sharing your timelines and keeping this thread updated - it's helping so many of us navigate this stressful process!

Hi Ryan! I'm also new to dealing with offsets and your situation sounds almost identical to what I'm going through right now. My refund was supposed to be $7,800 but they're taking $2,950 for some business tax issues I didn't even realize were outstanding. I just joined this community yesterday after seeing the 898 code on my transcript and honestly, this thread has been such a relief! Everyone's experiences seem to follow that same 7-14 day pattern after the offset codes appear. It's amazing how similar all our stories are - I was also convinced the offset would tie up my entire refund for months. Reading through James's experience and seeing how Jabari-Jo got their remainder in just 9 days really helps ease the anxiety. I'm checking my transcript daily now looking for that 846 code with the actual deposit date. Hoping we both see some good news soon! Thanks for sharing your timeline - it helps to know others are in the same boat right now.

I'm new to this community and currently dealing with my first offset situation. My 2023 refund was supposed to be $5,400 but they're offsetting $2,100 for some old state tax debt that got transferred to the Treasury Offset Program. I saw the 898 code appear on my transcript two days ago and have been frantically checking for updates ever since. This thread has been incredibly helpful and reassuring! Reading everyone's experiences - especially the consistent 7-14 day timeline after the 898 code appears - gives me hope that my remaining $3,300 should come through soon. I was initially panicked thinking the entire refund would be held up indefinitely, but it sounds like that's rarely the case. I'll keep watching for that 846 code with the actual deposit date that everyone mentions. Thank you all for sharing your detailed experiences and timelines - it's helping so many of us navigate this stressful process for the first time!

Hi Amara! Welcome to the community - I'm also pretty new here and dealing with my first offset situation too. Your timeline sounds very similar to what many of us are experiencing right now. It's really reassuring to see how consistent everyone's experiences have been with that 7-14 day window after the 898 code shows up. I was also initially terrified that an offset would mean waiting months for any money, but reading through all these detailed experiences from James, Jabari-Jo, and others has been such a relief. The state tax debt situation sounds stressful, but from what I've gathered here, the type of debt doesn't seem to significantly impact the timeline once the offset process starts moving. I'm also obsessively checking my transcript for that 846 code! It's so helpful to know others are going through the exact same anxiety right now. Fingers crossed we both see some positive updates soon - keep us posted on how it goes!
