Will SSI garnish my tax refund? Got overpayment letter but offset hotline shows $0
Got a letter from SSI about owing them money and threatening to garnish my tax refund. Called the treasury offset number but no balance shows up. Anyone know if they'll still take my refund? Really need the money and scared to file.

Tax professional here. If the debt isn't showing on the Treasury Offset Program (TOP) hotline, it likely hasn't been certified for offset yet. However, SSI debts can take 60-90 days to appear in the system after notification. I'd recommend keeping checking the offset number weekly.

Generally wait 90 days after receiving the letter to be safe. You could also set up a payment plan with SSI to avoid the offset entirely.
