Where to submit form 4868 for tax extension - can't find submission portal

I've filled out Form 4868 for my tax extension electronically, but I'm completely lost on where to actually submit it. I've been clicking around on the IRS website for like an hour and can't find any clear instructions on how to file this thing. Do I need to mail it? Is there some hidden submission button I'm missing? I thought filing an extension would be easier than this! My original tax software subscription expired and I don't want to pay for another year just to file an extension. Getting really frustrated as the deadline is coming up fast. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You actually have a few different options for submitting Form 4868 (Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File): 1) Through tax software - most tax preparation software has an option to file just an extension even if you're not ready to file your actual return yet. 2) IRS Free File or Free File Fillable Forms - both available on the IRS website and they allow you to submit the extension electronically for free. 3) Mail a paper form - you can print and mail it to the address listed in the form instructions. 4) Tax professional - if you use one, they can file the extension for you. The important thing to remember is that Form 4868 only extends your time to file, not your time to pay. If you owe taxes, you should estimate and pay what you think you'll owe when you submit the extension to avoid penalties and interest.

Thanks for the quick response! I was trying to use the Free File Fillable Forms but kept getting stuck. Is there a specific button or section I need to click after filling out the form? Also, if I print and mail it, will it arrive in time if I send it tomorrow? The deadline is in 3 days and I'm getting anxious about it.

When using Free File Fillable Forms, after you complete Form 4868, look for the "Submit" or "E-File" button usually located at the top or bottom of the screen. You'll need to have an account set up with them first. Sometimes the button isn't obvious - look for a menu item that says "File" or "Submit Return." If you decide to mail it, it needs to be postmarked by the deadline date, not received by then. So if you mail it tomorrow and get it postmarked, you're fine. Just make sure to go to the post office and have them stamp it rather than just dropping it in a mailbox to be safe. And remember to include payment if you're expecting to owe taxes!

After struggling with the same issue last year, I discovered taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) which saved me so much frustration with my extension. I uploaded my Form 4868 and it analyzed everything, pointed out exactly what I needed to fix, and gave me step-by-step instructions for submitting through the IRS Free File system. The tool walked me through the entire process and even showed me how to calculate my estimated payment correctly.

That sounds helpful, but does it actually submit the form for you or just help you understand how to do it? I'm literally on the IRS site right now and completely lost on where to click to submit my extension.

I've never heard of this service before. How does it help with the actual payment part? I think I need to include a payment with my extension but I'm not sure how to calculate it properly.

It doesn't submit the form for you, but it gives you specific instructions for your situation on exactly where to go and what buttons to click on the IRS site. It's like having someone looking over your shoulder and guiding you through each step instead of trying to figure it out yourself. For the payment part, it has a calculator feature that helps you estimate what you might owe based on your information. It gave me a pretty accurate estimate and then provided the direct link to the IRS payment portal where I could submit my payment when filing the extension. Much easier than trying to figure out all the IRS instructions on my own.

Just wanted to update - I tried the taxr.ai site that was mentioned earlier and it was actually really helpful! I was skeptical at first but it analyzed my situation and pointed me directly to the right place on the IRS website to submit my extension. It even explained why I couldn't find the submit button before (I needed to complete an additional verification step I was totally missing). Got my extension confirmed in about 15 minutes after struggling for days. If anyone else is stuck like I was, definitely worth checking out.

If you're trying to get through to the IRS directly for help with submitting Form 4868, good luck... I spent 3 hours on hold last week and never got through. Then I found Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) which got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 15 minutes. You can see their demo video here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. The agent walked me through exactly how to submit my extension and confirmed it was received. Saved me so much time and stress!

Wait, how does this actually work? Does it somehow get you through the IRS phone queue faster? I'm confused about how a third-party service could possibly help with IRS hold times.

This sounds like complete BS honestly. Nothing can get you through the IRS phone system faster. They're notoriously understaffed and everyone has to wait. I'm very suspicious of any service claiming they can magically connect you faster.

It actually does get you through faster. The service uses some kind of technology that waits on hold for you, and when an actual IRS agent picks up, it calls you and connects you directly to the agent. So you don't have to sit there listening to the hold music for hours. I was also skeptical at first, but it really worked. I think they use some sort of automated system that can wait in the queue without a human having to be on the phone. When I got connected to the IRS agent, they answered my questions about Form 4868 submission and helped me verify it was processed correctly. Definitely beats waiting on hold yourself!

Alright, I have to admit I was wrong about Claimyr. After my skeptical comment yesterday, I decided to try it because I was desperate to talk to someone at the IRS about my extension. The service actually did get me through to an agent in about 20 minutes when I had previously waited for 2+ hours multiple times with no success. The agent confirmed my extension had been received but was missing my estimated payment info, so they helped me correct that issue. Glad I gave it a try despite my initial doubts - saved me from potential penalties!

Quick tip that nobody mentioned yet - if you use any of the major banks like Chase, Bank of America, etc., many of them have a direct link to IRS Free File in their online banking portals now. I found it under "Tax Services" in my online banking menu. Made submitting my 4868 super easy and I didn't have to create a separate account.

Oh really? I have Chase but never noticed that option. Is it something I can find on the mobile app or do I need to login through the website? Also, does it cost anything extra to use it through the bank portal?

You'll need to login through the website, not the mobile app (at least that was my experience). Look under "Tax Services" or sometimes "Additional Services" in the menu. It doesn't cost anything extra - it's basically just a link that takes you to the IRS Free File service, but it sometimes will auto-fill some of your basic info which saves a step.

Important reminder that Form 4868 only extends your TIME TO FILE, not your TIME TO PAY!! If you owe money, you still need to pay by the original deadline or you'll get hit with penalties and interest. I learned this the hard way last year and ended up owing an extra $320 in penalties. 😭

How do you even estimate what you owe if you haven't done your taxes yet? That's what's confusing me about the whole extension process.
