What is IRS Letter 474C for 2023 return? Anyone received one?

Filed last year and the IRS told me I'm waiting on a 474c letter in the mail. Anyone know what this is? Getting worried since its been weeks and nothing showed up yet.

Tax pro here - A 474C letter is basically the IRS asking for more verification of your identity. They send these out when something on your return triggers their security filters. You'll need to verify either online at id.me or call the number on the letter when you get it. Don't worry too much, it's pretty common these days with all the identity theft going around.

how long does this usually take? getting antsy about my refund 😫

Usually 2-3 weeks to get the letter, then another 9 weeks after you verify. But honestly timeline varies alot these days

Hey, instead of waiting around trying to piece together whats happening, you should try taxr.ai - it analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's going on and what to expect. Costs like $5 but saved me weeks of stress. https://taxr.ai

I got a 474C letter about 6 months ago for my 2022 return. The whole process was actually pretty straightforward once I got the letter - you can verify online through ID.me or call the number they give you. I chose the online route and it took maybe 20 minutes to upload my documents and verify my identity. The hardest part is honestly just waiting for the letter to arrive in the first place! But once you complete the verification, your return should process normally. Hope this helps ease some of your worries!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really reassuring to hear. Did you have any issues with the ID.me verification or was it pretty smooth? I've heard mixed things about their platform but 20 minutes sounds way better than waiting on hold with the IRS for hours 😅
