IRS Letter 86C - What does this mean and what should I expect?
Just got off the phone with the IRS and they mentioned I should be expecting a Letter 86C in the mail soon. Anyone have experience with this? Really worried about what this means for my return.

Tax pro here - Letter 86C is actually good news! It means the IRS finished reviewing your return and no changes were needed. You should receive your refund (if you're owed one) within 2-3 weeks after getting the letter.

Hey guys instead of guessing what letters mean, I've been using taxr.ai - its this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening. Costs $1 but saved me hours of stress. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

Just wanted to add - when you get your Letter 86C, don't panic if the language seems formal or confusing. It's basically the IRS saying "we looked at your return, everything checks out, and we're processing it as filed." The key thing to look for is whether they mention any adjustments or if they're releasing your refund. Congrats on getting through the review process!

Totally agree with what everyone's saying - Letter 86C is definitely one of the good ones! I got mine about 3 weeks ago and my refund hit my account 12 days later. The waiting is the worst part but once you see that letter, you know you're in the clear. Just make sure to keep checking your bank account or wherever you're getting your refund deposited. Sometimes it shows up a day or two earlier than expected!

•That's so reassuring to hear! 12 days is pretty quick - I'm hoping mine comes through just as fast. Did you get any notification when it was deposited or did it just show up? I've been checking my account obsessively lol 😅

Letter 86C is definitely a relief! I remember getting one last year and being so confused by the official language, but it really is just their way of saying "all good, no issues found." One thing I'd recommend is setting up text alerts with your bank if you haven't already - that way you'll know the moment your refund hits. The IRS website also has a "Where's My Refund" tool that updates pretty regularly once they issue the letter. Hang in there, you're almost at the finish line!

•Thanks for mentioning the "Where's My Refund" tool! I'm new to all this tax stuff and didn't even know that existed. Just set it up and it's showing "being processed" - guessing that'll update once I get the 86C letter? Also setting up those bank alerts right now, that's such a smart idea 🙏

Letter 86C is definitely a good sign! I went through this exact same situation last year and was panicking for no reason. The letter basically confirms they've completed their review and found no issues with your return. From my experience, once you receive the physical letter, your refund should be direct deposited within 10-21 days (mine took about 14 days). Pro tip: make sure your banking info is correct on file because any delays there could slow things down. You're almost done with this whole process - the hardest part (the waiting and worrying) is basically over!

•This is so helpful, thank you! I'm in the exact same boat as the original poster and have been losing sleep over this. 14 days sounds totally reasonable - I was worried it would be months. Quick question though - when you say "banking info is correct on file," do you mean the routing/account numbers from when I originally filed? Is there any way to update that if it changed, or am I stuck with whatever I put on my return?
