What happens if I file my taxes twice after already receiving a refund?
So I already filed my taxes through TurboTax about 2 months ago and paid around $27 for the service. My refund came through pretty quickly, but now I'm wondering if I made a mistake. My coworker just told me she used a different tax filing website and ended up getting a $3k refund when she thought she was going to owe money! I can't help feeling like I might have missed out on a bigger refund. Is there any problem if I try filing again through this other site even though I've already received my refund? Has anyone done this before? Would the IRS flag this or something? I'm really tempted to see if I could get more money back, but don't want to get in trouble.

Filing your taxes twice in the same year is a big no-no. Once you've filed and the IRS has accepted your return, that's it for the tax year unless you file an amended return (Form 1040-X). If you try to file a completely new return, the IRS will reject it because their system will see your SSN has already been used for the year. If somehow a second return did get through, it would create a huge mess that could trigger audits, penalties, and a lot of headaches. What you should do instead is review your original return. Look at what deductions and credits you claimed. If you think you missed something, you can file an amended return to correct specific items. The amended return only changes what needs to be fixed, not your entire tax situation. Just because your coworker got a bigger refund doesn't necessarily mean you're entitled to the same. Tax situations vary widely based on income, dependents, deductions, and many other factors.

•But what if I discover I actually qualify for a significant credit I didn't claim? Like the earned income credit or something? Wouldn't filing again be worth it then?

•If you discover you qualify for a significant credit you didn't claim, that's exactly what the amended return process is designed for. You would file Form 1040-X to specifically claim that missed credit, not submit a completely new tax return. Filing an amended return allows you to correct specific elements of your original filing while keeping everything else intact. The IRS will process this as a correction rather than a duplicate filing, which avoids all the problems associated with filing twice.

After I struggled understanding why my refund seemed lower than expected despite working two jobs last year, I found this amazing tool called taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) that actually helped me identify some missed deductions on my return. You upload your tax documents, and it analyzes them to find potential missed deductions or credits without having to file a whole new return. I was skeptical at first, but it flagged that I had completely missed claiming my student loan interest deduction because I didn't receive the 1098-E form and forgot about it. It prompted me with the right questions about my education expenses too. I was able to file an amended return with the correct information and got an additional $750 back!

•How does taxr.ai handle self-employment income? I do some freelance work on the side and always feel like I'm missing deductions there.

•Is it secure though? I'm always nervous about uploading my tax documents to random websites. How do you know they're not stealing your information?

•For self-employment income, it's actually really helpful because it asks detailed questions about your business expenses that many people overlook. It caught that I could deduct part of my cell phone bill and home internet since I use them partially for my side gig, which TurboTax never prompted me about. Regarding security, I had the same concern initially. They use bank-level encryption for all uploads and don't store your actual tax documents after analysis. You can also see their privacy policy before uploading anything. I researched them pretty thoroughly before trying it and felt comfortable with their security measures.

I wanted to follow up about taxr.ai since I was skeptical in my earlier comment. I decided to try it despite my security concerns, and I'm actually really impressed. It identified that I had been classifying some of my teaching supplies incorrectly and could have claimed the Educator Expense deduction. The analysis took only about 10 minutes, and the interface walked me through exactly what I needed to change on my amended return. Just submitted my 1040-X last week based on their recommendations. The peace of mind knowing I didn't miss anything was honestly worth it even beyond the additional refund I'm expecting.

If you're planning to file an amended return, good luck trying to reach anyone at the IRS to confirm it was received or processed! I spent WEEKS trying to get through their phone lines about my amended return from last year. Always busy signals or disconnects after waiting for hours. Then I found https://claimyr.com which basically holds your place in the IRS phone queue and calls you when an agent is about to answer. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. I was connected to an actual IRS agent within 45 minutes instead of spending days repeatedly calling. They confirmed my amended return was being processed and gave me the timeline for my additional refund.

•How does this actually work though? Like, are they somehow hacking into the IRS phone system or something? Sounds kinda shady.

•Yeah right. There's no way this actually works. The IRS phone system is notoriously impossible to navigate. I'll believe it when I see proof someone actually got through.

•It's definitely not hacking anything. From what I understand, they use an automated system that calls and navigates the IRS phone tree for you, then when it detects it's about to reach a human agent, it connects that call to your phone. It's basically like having someone wait on hold for you. The reason it works better than doing it yourself is they have a system that can continuously redial and navigate the menus much more efficiently than a human could manually. Nothing shady - they're just using technology to solve the horrible wait time problem. It legitimately saved me from taking a day off work just to sit on hold with the IRS.

OK I need to eat my words from my earlier comment. After getting frustrated with another failed attempt to reach the IRS about my missing refund, I reluctantly tried Claimyr. I was 100% convinced it would be a waste of time, but I was desperate. Holy crap it actually worked. I got a call back in about an hour, and sure enough, there was an actual IRS agent on the line. We sorted out the issue with my return (turns out there was a discrepancy with my reported withholding), and now my refund is being processed correctly. Saved me from taking a personal day just to sit on hold. I've never been so happy to be wrong about something.

Another option instead of filing twice (which you definitely shouldn't do) is to use a free tax review service. Many CPAs will look at your previous return for free or a small fee to see if anything was missed. I did this last year and discovered TurboTax had completely missed a business expense deduction that was worth about $900 in tax savings.

•Do you have to go in person for that kind of review? I'm not sure if there are any CPAs near me, plus I'm pretty busy with work.

•No, most CPAs can do this remotely now. You just need to send them a PDF of your tax return from TurboTax, and they can review it. Many have secure upload portals on their websites. I actually did mine completely virtually - uploaded my documents, had a 20-minute Zoom call to discuss what they found, and they emailed me their recommendations. The good ones will tell you upfront if they think there's potential for significant changes before charging you for a full amended return service. Sometimes they'll even waive the review fee if they end up preparing your amended return.

Just wondering - what site did your coworker use that got her a bigger refund? Maybe worth checking out for next year even if you can't file twice this year.

•This is actually a really important question. Different tax software can give wildly different results depending on how they ask questions. I tried three different ones last year (FreeTaxUSA, TurboTax, and H&R Block) and got refund estimates that varied by almost $800!
