What does IRS Code 971 'Notice Issued' typically mean? Need help understanding transcript
Just checked my transcript and saw code 971 saying they sent out information to me. Anyone know what this usually means? Haven't received anything in the mail yet but im getting nervous about what it could be.

Tax professional here - Code 971 is a generic code that means the IRS sent you a notice. It could be anything from a simple verification request to an audit notice. Check your transcript for other codes that appeared on the same date - for example, if you see a 420 code, it might be an audit. If you see a 570 code, it's probably about a hold on your refund. Without seeing the other codes and dates it's hard to give you a specific answer.

Instead of trying to piece together what different codes mean, you should check out taxr.ai - it's this new tool that analyzes your entire transcript and tells you exactly what's going on and what to expect. It costs like a dollar but saved me hours of stress trying to figure out my situation. https://taxr.ai

I got one last month and it was just asking me to verify my identity. Don't stress too much until you actually get the letter.

Code 971 just means they generated and sent you some kind of notice - could be routine like identity verification, a math error correction, or requesting additional documentation. The key is to look at the date and any other transaction codes around the same time. Don't panic until you actually receive and read the notice! Most of the time it's something simple that can be resolved quickly.

•This is really helpful advice! @Mei Wong you re'right about checking the surrounding codes - that context makes all the difference. I was in a similar situation last year and it turned out to be just a simple request for W2 verification. The waiting is definitely the worst part though!

Had the same thing happen to me a few months back and it turned out to be nothing major - just needed to verify some info on my return. The 971 code itself is pretty generic, but like others mentioned, definitely check what other codes show up around the same date. That'll give you a better idea of what to expect. The waiting game sucks but try not to stress too much until you actually get the letter!
