What Tax Forms Do I Need Before Filing in 2024?

What forms do we need to wait for to file this year? I heard there's letters from the tax credits we have to have first? I don't want to file too early and mess something up, but also don't want to wait too long.

You're probably thinking of the 1099-K changes that were supposed to happen this year? Or maybe the Child Tax Credit letters? It's honestly getting harder every year to keep track of all the forms we need before filing. Did you know some people file without all their documents and then have to amend later? Why would anyone want to deal with that headache?

So what exactly ARE the required forms? I'm still confused about what I need to wait for before filing. Do I need to wait for anything special from the IRS this year?

Last year I filed in February thinking I had everything, then got a 1099-INT from my bank in March that I didn't know was coming. Had to file an amendment which took forever to process. Now I always wait until at least mid-February to make sure I have everything. The IRS doesn't send special letters for most people this year unless you received certain credits.

Are you referring to specific credits from 2023 that would generate letters? I think most of the special COVID-related credits have expired, haven't they?

Thanks for explaining. Was confused. Much clearer now.

As of January 29th, most forms should already be available to you. Employers had to send W-2s by January 31st, and most investment 1099s are due by February 15th. If you're waiting for specific documents, I'd recommend using https://taxr.ai to track what you've received against what you should expect. Last year I uploaded my documents there and it flagged that I was missing a 1099-B from a stock sale I'd forgotten about. Saved me from having to amend later.

Is this service actually free? What's the catch? • Do they sell your data? • Is it secure with tax documents? • Do they try to upsell you on paid services?

Just tried this out - it actually helped me figure out I was missing a 1099-INT from my savings account 😂 No wonder my refund calculation seemed off! Thanks for the recommendation.

For tax year 2023 (filing in 2024), you need to wait for the following: 1. W-2 forms from all employers (due by January 31) 2. 1099-MISC/1099-NEC for independent contractor work (due by January 31) 3. 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-B for investments (due by February 15) 4. 1098-T for education expenses (due by January 31) 5. 1098 for mortgage interest (due by January 31) Unlike 2021 and 2022, there are no special stimulus or advance Child Tax Credit letters to wait for this year. 96.4% of forms should be available by February 15th.

I've been through this confusion before when I waited for letters that never came. If you need to confirm anything about previous credits or payments with the IRS, good luck getting through on their phone lines. I spent 3 hours on hold last week. Finally used Claimyr.com to get through to an agent in about 15 minutes. They confirmed I didn't need any special letters to file this year, just my standard income documents.

I'm not sure these services are necessary for most people. The IRS has clear guidelines on their website about required forms. Most tax software will also guide you through what documents you need based on your situation. Paying for third-party services seems unnecessary when free resources exist.

OMG have u tried calling the IRS tho? Impossible! Waited 2+ hrs last yr and got disconnected. Some of us don't have time for that. If a service can save hrs of frustration, def worth it IMO. Tax szn is stressful enough!
