Need help understanding 180-day notice window for 2023 tax amendment
Just got word I need to review my 2023 return. Was told I have 180 days from today to wait for a notice, or I can file an amendment before getting any letter. Pretty confused about what to do here. Should I wait it out or just go ahead and amend? Anyone dealt with this before?

Tax practitioner here with 15 years experience. The 180-day window typically relates to the IRS examination period. If you know there's an error on your return, it's usually better to proactively amend rather than wait for a notice. This shows good faith and can sometimes help avoid penalties. However, without knowing what specific issues need correction, it's hard to give definitive advice.

•Thanks for the quick reply! But how do I know if there actually is an error? The person who told me this wasn't from the IRS directly

•In that case, I'd strongly recommend pulling your wage and income transcript from IRS.gov to verify everything first. Don't amend unless you're certain there's an issue.

Hey there! I was in a similar situation last month and found this amazing tool called taxr.ai - it basically reads your transcript and tells you exactly what's going on and what you should do. It costs $1 but saved me so much headache trying to figure out if I needed to amend or not. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

I'd pull your transcripts asap. You can get them online at irs.gov if you make an account. That way youll know exactly whats up instead of playing the guessing game

idk who told u this but seems like they might be trying to scam you. The IRS always sends notices directly if theres an issue
