WMR status changed from PATH to 'Received and Being Processed' - Collections hold for unfiled 2022 return, Head of Household refund in question
I reached out to the IRS about a week ago asking about my return. The agent told me my refund was on hold because I'm in collections for not filing my 2022 taxes. I explained I had a job change and thought I'd filed everything correctly. Today I checked my WMR app and noticed it changed status. It was previously showing the PATH message, but now my IRS2Go app shows "We have received your tax return and it is being processed." The app shows my filing status as Head of Household, and it has the three-stage tracker showing "Return Received" highlighted, but "Refund Approved" and "Refund Sent" are still grayed out. There's also a note that says "Please Note: For refund information, please continue to check here, or visit IRS.gov/Refunds. Updates to refund status are made no more than once a day." Does this status change mean they're processing my refund soon? I'm wondering if this means they've resolved the collections issue for my unfiled 2022 return, or if they'll still place an offset on my refund. I filed as Head of Household this year since I'm single with a dependent, which should give me a larger refund, but I'm concerned about how much might be taken for the collections. Sadly I can't access my transcript online to check codes and I haven't filed my 2024 return yet since I'm still waiting on my W2. I'm really hoping this status change in the IRS2Go app is a good sign that things are moving forward. Has anyone experienced this change from the PATH message to "return received and processing" before?

Based on the status change from PATH to 'received and being processed,' there's likely movement on your return. However, this doesn't necessarily mean immediate payment. Here's what's happening: - The PATH message disappears when your return clears initial verification - 'Being processed' means they're reviewing your return but doesn't indicate approval yet - If you have an unfiled 2022 return, they may hold your refund until you resolve that issue - If there's an offset, you should receive a letter explaining how much was taken and why I recommend filing your missing 2022 return ASAP if you haven't already, as this will help clear the hold. The collections issue won't resolve until you address the missing return. As for checking offset information, you can call the Treasury Offset Program at 800-304-3107 to see if any of your refund will be taken.

Thanks for this detailed info! I'll definitely look into filing that 2022 return ASAP. Do you know how long it typically takes after getting this 'being processed' message before they either send the refund or tell me about offsets?

It varies quite a bit, but typically you'll see movement within 1-3 weeks after the status change. If there's an offset, you should receive a notice before or around the time any remaining refund is issued.

Just went thru this whole situation myself. The TOP phone number was useless for me tho - just gave automated info I already knew. File that 2022 return right away!

I went through something similar with my transcript confusion. I tried researching online for hours and was getting nowhere. Then someone recommended taxr.ai and it was a complete game-changer! It analyzed my situation and explained exactly what was happening with my return and what the hold meant. Even though you can't access your transcript online, you can request one by mail and then use taxr.ai to decode it. Saved me so much stress and waiting on hold with the IRS. Highly recommend checking it out at https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does wayyy more than just reading the transcript. It actually analyzes all the codes and dates, explains what each step means in plain english, and tells you what to expect next. Plus it can answer questions about your specific situation. I was totally lost before using it.

HOLY CRAP I JUST TRIED THIS AND IT'S AMAZING!! I've been trying to figure out my transcript for months and in like 2 minutes this thing told me exactly what was happening and when to expect my refund. Why doesn't everyone know about this?! 🤯

does it cost anything? seems like it would be expensive for something the IRS should just make easier themselves 🙄

Honestly worth every penny considering the thousands in refund it helped me track down. The peace of mind alone knowing exactly what's happening with my money instead of guessing was worth it.

After two months of checking WMR daily and getting nowhere, I finally got through to an actual IRS agent using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They got me a callback from the IRS within an hour! The agent explained my exact situation - also had a hold for a past year issue. Talking directly to them got my refund released in like 3 days after months of waiting. Best money I've ever spent considering how much I was owed in my refund.

Seems kinda sketchy. How does that even work? They can't just magically make the IRS call you 🙄

It's not magic lol. They basically navigate the IRS phone tree for you and hold your place in line. When they're about to reach an agent, they connect the call to your phone. Saved me literally hours of being on hold. The IRS actually does call you back.

I tried calling the IRS 14 times last month and never got through. This actually works?

Yes! I was super skeptical too but my refund was several thousand dollars and I was desperate after months of nothing. Got a real agent who fixed my issue in minutes. Wish I'd done it sooner.

The IRS is such a joke. They put YOUR money on hold because THEY think you didn't file, then make it impossible to actually talk to anyone to fix it. Then they act like they're doing you a favor by eventually giving you YOUR MONEY back. The whole system is designed to be confusing and difficult 😤

Preach!! I've been waiting 9 months for my refund. NINE MONTHS. That's a whole human pregnancy. Meanwhile they'd be charging me interest and penalties if I was late paying them 🤡

And they wonder why people hate dealing with taxes. I literally would rather go to the DMV ten times than deal with the IRS once lmao

That status change is definitely a good sign! When mine changed from PATH to that message, I got my direct deposit exactly 9 days later. I'd still recommend filing that missing 2022 return ASAP though.

The PATH message disappearing is usually a good sign, but it doesn't mean your refund is necessarily coming in full. If you're in collections, they might offset (take) some or all of your refund to cover past due amounts. You should get a letter explaining any offset.

That's what I'm worried about. I didn't even realize I had a problem with my 2022 taxes until they told me on the phone. Hoping they don't take the whole amount since I'm really counting on this refund.

They usually only offset the amount you actually owe plus any penalties. So if you don't owe a lot, you might still get most of your refund. But definitely file that missing return ASAP!

Same boat. Had a PATH hold, then it changed to processing, then got my refund 2 weeks later minus what I owed for 2021. They should send you a letter explaining any offset before they send the remaining refund. The fact that it changed from PATH is definitely movement.

LOL this EXACT same thing happened to me earlier this month. Called and they said I didn't file my 2022 return even tho I DID. I had to find my confirmation email to prove I filed electronically. Once I pointed that out they found it and released my refund about a week later. Sometimes they just lose returns in their system.

Wow really? Maybe I should double check if I actually did file then. I had a lot going on last year and might have filed but forgotten about it? How did you check beyond the confirmation email?

If you used tax software last year you should be able to login and see your filing history. Or check your bank account around tax time last year to see if you paid for tax prep. That's how I jogged my memory!

Former IRS employee here. That status change is meaningfil. The PATH Act verification is complete, but they've now flagged your account for the missing return. The "being processed" status means they're holding it while they verify whether you truly didn't file 2022 or if it's an error in their system (which happens A LOT). You should call the TOP (Treasury Offset Program) at 800-304-3107 to see if your refund is being offset.

Interesting! What percentage of "missing returns" are actually IRS errors vs people who genuinely didn't file?

I don't have exact stats, but I'd estimate around 25-30% are system errors. The IRS still uses technology from the 1960s in some departments, and returns get "lost" in the system surprisingly often. Especially if you paper filed.

That's super helpful context, thank you! I did file electronically last year but had some issues with the software crashing during submission. I thought it went through but maybe it didn't.

Ok so I literally just went thru this EXACT situation 2 weeks ago. What worked for me was using taxr.ai to understand my transcript situation (https://taxr.ai). It showed me exactly what was happening with my refund and why there was a hold. The PATH message changing means you're moving forward, but if there's an offset coming you want to know ASAP. The taxr tool told me exactly how much I was getting and when. Super accurate.

That status change is generally positive, but with a collections issue it's hard to say. I recommend: 1) File your missing 2022 return immediately 2) Call the Taxpayer Advocate Service at 877-777-4778 if it's causing financial hardship 3) Check if you qualify for Currently Not Collectible status if you can't pay 4) Request a payment plan before collections takes further action

Thank you! I didn't even know the Taxpayer Advocate Service was an option. It is causing me financial hardship so I'll definitely look into that.

Yup you're getting close. They've verified your return meets the PATH requirements and now they're processing to see what (if any) offsets apply. If collections said you never filed last year, they'll likely hold some or all of your refund to cover what they think you owe. U should get a letter explaining this before or with any remaining refund.

I was in the same boat trying for DAYS with no luck. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback within an hour. They actually connected me with an IRS agent who fixed my issue on the spot. Totally worth it when you're desperate to talk to someone.

Another tip is to call right when they open at 7am Eastern. That's how I finally got through after weeks of trying. But even then I was on hold for almost an hour.

Ugggh i hate the IRS with a burning passion. Had the EXACT same thing happen. They said I didn't file 2021 taxes but I DID and had proof. Took 4 months to resolve. The status change is good but don't get your hopes up for quick resolution if collections is involved. Sorry to be a downer but prepare for a wait 😔

The trick to getting your refund faster when there's a hold is to FILE. THE. MISSING. RETURN. Even if you think you already did it, file it again. That's what worked for me. And if you're struggling to understand what's happening with your taxes, use taxr.ai - it saved me so much headache by explaining everything in plain English instead of IRS jargon.

Doesn't filing twice cause problems though? I'm worried about triggering some kind of fraud alert if I file a return for a year they might already have.

If you're filing electronically it'll just get rejected if they already have one. If paper filing just write "POSSIBLE DUPLICATE" at the top. Better to try than to keep waiting forever!

If ur refund is on HOLD because of collections for not filing 2022... Then YES, most likely ur 2023 refund will be OFFSET to cover ur tax debt from 2022. It won't be released until u file the missing 2022 return. The WMR change is just showing it moved past PATH hold but its NOW on a DIFFERENT hold for collections.
