WMR Status Lost Code 152 - Filed Jan 29 - No Letters Received

I noticed something concerning with my tax refund status that I haven't encountered in previous years. I filed on January 29th and was accepted the same day, which seemed normal compared to my past experiences. However, I just checked Where's My Refund and noticed the code 152 that was previously displayed is now gone. This seems unusual compared to the standard processing pattern I've observed in previous filings. I haven't received any letters from the IRS explaining this change, and I'm cautious about what steps to take next. I've attempted to call several times but can't get through to a representative. Has anyone else experienced a disappearing code 152? I'm wondering if this is a common occurrence this tax season or if I should be concerned.

Oh my goodness, isn't it crazy how these tax codes just appear and disappear without any explanation?? I'm going through my first tax season and I'm completely lost with all these numbers and codes. What does 152 even mean? And how can it just vanish? Shouldn't the IRS give us some kind of notification when something changes on our account? How are we supposed to know what's happening if they don't communicate with us?

Appreciate all these questions! I was wondering the exact same things. The tax system feels like it was designed to be deliberately confusing sometimes, doesn't it?

Code 152 is actually just a standard processing notification. I had mine disappear on March 12th last year, and my refund showed up exactly 8 days later on March 20th. The disappearance often means they're moving to the next stage of processing.

Thank you for explaining this! I remember panicking last year when my codes changed too. Wish the IRS would explain these things better instead of making us all detectives.

I think I can help explain what might be happening. Here's what you should know: 1. First, code 152 simply means your return is being processed normally 2. Sometimes the code disappears when they move to the next processing stage 3. If you filed in late January, you're probably just now hitting the 8-week mark 4. At this point, you should check your tax transcript if possible 5. The transcript will give you more detailed codes than WMR 6. If you can't access your transcript, you might need to wait another week I'm slightly worried that you haven't received any communication, but in many cases, this is actually normal.

I appreciate this breakdown! Much clearer than what I've been able to figure out on my own. This is so much more organized than the explanations on the IRS website.

Just to add to this - I had the exact same thing happen last year. My code 152 disappeared after about 7 weeks, and I got my refund direct deposited 6 days later without any further updates on WMR. Sometimes the system just skips steps!

Has anyone tried using the IRS2Go app instead of the website? Does it show different or more updated info than the website version of WMR?

Hey there! Sry to hear ur dealing w/ this. FWIW, the 152 code disappearing isn't necessarily bad news. It often means ur return is moving to the next stage of processing. I've seen this happen lots during this tax szn. The timing makes sense tbh - u filed 1/29, it's now been ~9 wks which is when many ppl see movement. The WMR tool is notoriously glitchy and sometimes updates only once a wk or less. Def check ur transcripts if u can access them online - they're way more reliable than WMR.

Do you know if there are any specific reasons the IRS might remove code 152? I'm concerned about: ā€¢ Potential identity verification issues ā€¢ Return errors that might delay processing ā€¢ Whether this means an audit is coming

According to IRM 21.4.1.3, the disappearance of code 152 is typically associated with the transition from initial processing to refund approval. The Internal Revenue Code doesn't actually require notification for standard processing changes, only for adjustments, holds, or examinations.

I waited exactly 63 days last year after filing on January 23rd. My 152 code disappeared around day 54, and I received my refund on day 63. The timing this year seems to be running about 7-10 days longer for everyone I know! We need these refunds processed ASAP!

Just to clarify what others have said - code 152 disappearing is usually just a system update. Unless you receive a 4464C letter (audit notification) or a 5071C letter (identity verification request), there's no need to worry about audits or identity issues.

I was probably in a somewhat similar situation last year. After waiting about 8 weeks with no updates, I sort of gave up on calling the regular IRS number because, well, it was basically impossible to get through. I finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) which somehow got me connected to an actual IRS representative in like 20 minutes. It might be worth the fee if you're really worried about your refund status. The agent was able to confirm that my return was just in normal processing despite the weird WMR status changes, and I got my refund about a week later. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get peace of mind.

Is this service actually legit? Seems weird to pay someone just to call the IRS for you when you could just keep trying yourself.

Did you have to provide any personal information to the service or just to the IRS agent once you got connected?

Just to clarify - Claimyr doesn't call the IRS for you. They use a system that holds your place in line and calls you when they get through. Then you talk directly to the IRS yourself. I've used it twice now and it saved me hours of hold time.

How much did it cost? Was it a one-time fee or subscription?

Based on your filing timeline and the disappearance of TC 152, you're experiencing what's known as a Processing Path Transition (PPT) in the IRS Master File system. When your return was initially accepted on January 29th, it entered the Error Resolution System (ERS) queue with a Transaction Code 152 indicator. The disappearance of this code typically indicates your return has passed initial validation and moved to the Refund Processing Pipeline (RPP). At this stage, your return undergoes Pre-Refund Verification (PRV) and potentially Identity Theft Risk Assessment (IDTRA). The absence of any CP05 or 4464C notices suggests your return is proceeding normally. I'm actually surprised the system is functioning as designed given the IRS's antiquated infrastructure!

Have you checked your Account Transcript rather than just relying on WMR? The Account Transcript will show Transaction Codes (TC) that provide much more detailed information about your return status. Look specifically for TC 150 (return filed), TC 806 (withholding credit), and TC 570/571 (hold/release) codes. The cycle date on your transcript can also help determine when updates are likely to occur. If you don't have a transcript account, you might consider requesting one through the Get Transcript service on IRS.gov.

Oh my god I went through EXACTLY this last month!! šŸ˜« Filed early February, had the 152 code for weeks, then it suddenly disappeared and I freaked out! Called and called with no luck getting through. I was literally checking WMR every morning at 3am hoping for an update! The good news? My refund showed up in my account THREE DAYS after the code disappeared with absolutely no warning or WMR update. The system is so broken this year! So many of us are experiencing this exact same thing - disappearing codes followed by surprise deposits. Hang in there! ā¤ļø

Everyone needs to understand that WMR is not reliable this tax season. The IRS is dealing with massive backlogs and outdated systems. Code 152 appearing or disappearing means nothing concrete. What matters is what's on your transcript. Get your transcript. Check for codes 570, 971, or 846. Those tell you what's really happening. Don't waste time calling unless you're past 21 days and see concerning codes on your transcript. Most returns filed in January are now processing normally despite WMR glitches.

What if you can't access your transcript online? Is there another way to check these codes?

Just to clarify something that hasn't been mentioned yet - the 152 code on WMR isn't actually an official IRS transaction code like the ones on your transcript (570, 971, etc). It's just a message code for the WMR tool itself. Its disappearance usually indicates the system is preparing to show you a new status, but the WMR tool often lags behind what's actually happening with your return. This is why many people report their refund arriving without WMR ever updating to the third bar.
