TurboTax Refund Advance Denied - Bank Communication Issue Between Cross River and Dave
Just wanted to share my experience with the refund deposit process! In my country, we never had such complicated tax system, so I'm learning everything step by step here in US. I filed with TurboTax and applied for their 5-day advance, but I was denied. Today I called Cross River Bank (the bank TurboTax uses for these advances) to check what's happening. The agent told me they received notification about my deposit YESTERDAY and they already sent notification to my bank (Dave) yesterday too! But when I called Dave, they said they haven't received anything yet - which is exactly what they ALWAYS say whenever I'm expecting any deposit. 😤 This happens every single time! The Cross River agent mentioned that since I was denied the 5-day advance, I should receive my funds anywhere between today and February 26th. I'm really hoping it comes through today or tomorrow! Has anyone else had experience with Dave banking or TurboTax refund advances? I want to understand this system better for next year!

This is a common issue with intermediary banks and digital banking platforms. Cross River is telling the truth - they did send the notification. Dave, like many digital banks, has processing delays they don't disclose to customers. ACH transfers technically take 1-3 business days to fully process, even after the sending bank initiates them. Dave likely won't show pending deposits until they're fully cleared, unlike traditional banks. Your money is in transit, not lost.

Is there any way to verify the status of the ACH transfer between these banks? Would calling the IRS help track where exactly the refund is in the system? I'm wondering if there's a tracking number or reference code that could be used to pinpoint the exact location of the funds.

It's like watching a package that's been marked as "shipped" but hasn't yet appeared on your doorstep. You know it's coming, but you're stuck in that frustrating limbo period where neither sender nor recipient can tell you exactly where it is. I'm concerned that if there's an actual error rather than just a delay, nobody will take responsibility until it's been weeks without resolution.

Did you receive your acceptance confirmation from the IRS exactly when you filed? I was denied the advance too, but my deposit hit Dave exactly 17 days after IRS acceptance. Also, did you check your transcript on the IRS site to see if it shows a deposit date? That's usually more accurate than what the banks tell you.

I think I did everything correctly... I received the IRS acceptance email from TurboTax about 24 hours after filing, and I've been monitoring both the Where's My Refund tool and my transcript. My transcript updated about a week ago with a deposit date of yesterday, which is probably why Cross River got the notification. I'm just worried because Dave has been problematic with deposits before, sometimes holding them for extra days without explanation.

According to IRS Publication 2043, once the IRS issues a direct deposit, the receiving financial institution should make funds available within 1-5 business days. If your transcript shows yesterday's date as the deposit date, Dave should have it by Monday at the latest. If they don't release it by then, you have grounds to file a complaint with the CFPB, as they're obligated to process electronic deposits in a timely manner.

Here's what's actually happening in these cases: Step 1: IRS approves your refund and sends it to their disbursement system Step 2: IRS sends funds to Cross River (since you applied through TurboTax) Step 3: Cross River processes and forwards to Dave Step 4: Dave receives but has internal processing time The frustrating part is that no one will help you track this between banks. I had a similar issue last year and wasted hours on hold with both banks. Eventually used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to reach an actual IRS agent who confirmed exactly when the funds were sent out, which helped me press Dave to locate the deposit. Sometimes you need official confirmation from the source to get these digital banks to take you seriously.

Does that service actually work? Need my refund ASAP. Can't spend hours on hold with IRS.

I've used it for two different tax issues, and while there is a fee, it's comparable to what you'd spend if you consider the value of your time. When I used it last April during peak season, I was connected in about 25 minutes instead of the 3+ hours I spent trying on my own the previous day. The IRS agent can see exactly when your refund was issued and to which financial institution, which gives you leverage when dealing with your bank.

Have you checked if Dave has any specific holds on tax refunds? Some digital banks place extended holds on government disbursements specifically - it's in their Terms of Service but buried deep. My bank had a 2-day "security verification period" for any deposit over $2,000 from government sources. Can you log into your Dave account and check for any pending transactions or contact their escalation team specifically?

Dave implemented a new verification system on January 15, 2024, that adds a 24-48 hour review period for government deposits over $1,500. This isn't widely advertised, but it's mentioned in their updated terms. If your deposit was initiated on February 22, accounting for this verification period plus standard ACH processing time, you should see it available by February 27 at the latest.

I would probably contact Dave again, but specifically ask to speak with their ACH department or a supervisor. Sometimes the frontline customer service representatives don't have visibility into pending transactions that haven't fully posted yet. In my experience, using the phrase "I need to speak with someone who can verify pending ACH transfers that might not be visible in the system yet" can get you to someone more helpful. If that doesn't work within 24 hours, you might need to consider filing a CFPB complaint, which often prompts faster action from financial institutions.

This is good advice. Also worth noting that many digital banks have separate departments for ACH processing versus general customer service. The general CS reps often can only see what's in their customer-facing system, not the back-end processing queue.

Exactly right. When I had this exact issue with Dave last year, I specifically asked for their "ACH Research Team" and they found my deposit was actually in their system but flagged for manual review because it was over $3,500. They released it within 4 hours after I escalated.
