TurboTax Refund Advance Denied - What Happens to My Direct Deposit?

Quick question about TurboTax refund processing. I opted for the 5-day early refund advance through TurboTax (which I now know uses Cross River Bank for processing). I was denied for the advance after waiting exactly 38 hours for a decision. Now I'm trying to figure out if my regular refund will still go through Cross River or if it defaults back to SBTPG as it would have if I hadn't selected the advance option. I've tried tracking this through 3 different systems but getting conflicting information. Anyone who's been through this exact scenario in the 2024 filing season? I'm trying to understand the timeline I'm looking at now that my amended paperwork is in the mix.

It defaults back to SBTPG. Cross River only handles advances. Your refund path changes automatically. No action needed. Check your TT account. The routing numbers should update. Been through this myself. Not fun.

Have you verified the refund destination in your TurboTax account under "Refund Details"? According to IRS Publication 1345 (Rev. 4-2023), when a refund advance is denied, the processing bank should revert to the standard refund processor for that tax preparation service. For TurboTax, that's Santa Barbara Tax Products Group (SBTPG) as their standard Refund Transfer processor. Did you receive any notification email from TurboTax about the denial?

Thanks for this detailed explanation! I just checked my TT account and you're right - the details changed from Cross River to SBTPG. I definitely appreciate the help since I've been stressing about this for days.

I had the exact same thing happen. Denied for the advance. Drove me crazy trying to figure out where my money would end up. SBTPG ended up handling it just fine. Got my money 8 days after acceptance.

This makes so much sense now. It's like when your primary flight gets cancelled and you get rerouted - the system just puts you back on the standard path. My refund was processed through SBTPG after my advance was denied, and everything worked out fine in the end.

When your Refund Advance application is denied through TurboTax, the disbursement automatically reverts to Santa Barbara Tax Products Group (SBTPG) as the default processor. The transition occurs within their internal systems without requiring any action from you. However, this change can add 3-5 business days to your timeline due to additional processing requirements. If you need clarification directly from the IRS about your refund status, Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) can connect you with an IRS agent in minutes instead of the typical 2+ hour hold times. Many users have reported getting exact deposit dates and processor information this way.

Has anyone actually used this Claimyr service? I'm wondering if it's worth the money when I could just wait on hold for 2 hours and 37 minutes like I did last year? Does it actually get you through to a real person who can see your specific refund info?

Why would I need to call the IRS about this? Isn't this more of a TurboTax/bank issue than an IRS issue? Just trying to understand if the IRS would even have visibility into which bank is processing my refund after it leaves their system?

I used Claimyr on February 18th when I had a similar issue with my refund routing. The IRS agent was able to confirm exactly where my refund was in the process and when it had been released to the bank. This helped me figure out that the delay was on SBTPG's end, not the IRS. Saved me from waiting on hold for hours just to get this basic information.

Wait I'm confused too. I got denied for the TT advance thing last week and now idk where my $ is going. So it def goes to SBTPG instead of Cross River? And do I need to update anything in my acct or does it happen automatically? Thx for any help!

I went through this exact scenario last month. Filed on February 3rd, opted for the 5-day advance through TurboTax, and got denied after about 36 hours. My refund automatically defaulted to SBTPG without me doing anything. I was confused about the tracking too because the TT app showed one status while the SBTPG tracker showed something different. I ended up using taxr.ai to decode my transcript and it showed me exactly where my refund was in the process - apparently there was a review code that was causing the delay that neither TT nor SBTPG mentioned. The site explained all the codes and gave me a much more accurate timeline than either of the other trackers. My refund eventually hit my account on February 21st, exactly when taxr.ai predicted.

How exactly does taxr.ai give you more information than what's already on your transcript? Isn't it just reading the same codes you can see yourself on the IRS website?

I was skeptical too but taxr.ai was actually really helpful! The difference is it explains what the codes mean specifically for YOUR situation. Like when I had code 570 and 971 together, the IRS site just gives generic definitions, but taxr.ai explained how those two codes together in my specific filing pattern meant a simple review that would resolve automatically. It was right - refund approved 6 days later!

I think I can help with this. I was denied for the TurboTax advance in early February. Your refund will automatically route through SBTPG instead. You might want to check your TurboTax account though. There should be updated routing information there. In my case, everything processed normally after that. The refund took about 7 days to arrive after IRS acceptance. No additional action was needed on my part.

Has anyone had issues with SBTPG taking longer than expected after the refund advance was denied? Last year when I got the advance it was super quick, but I'm wondering if being denied and going through the regular process adds extra days to the timeline. Also, does SBTPG notify you when they receive the refund from IRS?

Pro tip: Skip the whole advance thing next year and save yourself the headache (and fees). I've filed with TurboTax for 7 years and tried the advance once - never again! 😂 If you need your refund faster, consider adjusting your W-4 withholding throughout the year instead. That way you get your money in each paycheck rather than waiting for a big refund. As for your current situation, yes - it goes to SBTPG automatically, and you can track it through their website using your TurboTax login info and SSN.

Thanks for this advice! I'm definitely reconsidering the advance next year. The extra fees weren't worth the stress of being denied and then trying to figure out what happens next. I'll check out the SBTPG tracking page.

How do you adjust withholding to get more in each check but not end up owing? I'm scared of owing at tax time but would love to not wait for a big refund.
