Timeframe for ID Verification or 60-Day Review Notices from IRS?
According to IRS Publication 1345, most verification notices should be issued within 21 days of filing. I'm currently in a situation where I submitted an amended return (Form 1040-X) on March 2nd and still haven't received any correspondence about identity verification or a 60-day review notice. Per IRC Section 6532, I understand the IRS has processing guidelines they're supposed to follow, but I'm trying to gauge typical timeframes from others who've been through this. Has anyone received either an identity verification request or 60-day review notice recently? How long did it take to arrive after filing? I'm trying to collaborate with my tax preparer on next steps if this delay continues.

Getting those notices is like waiting for water to boil - it takes forever when you're watching it! I received my ID verification letter exactly 32 days after filing. It felt like waiting for a bus in the rain when you're already late. The worst part was that my refund was substantial and I needed it for car repairs. If yours is an amended return, expect it to take even longer than a regular return.

Mine took 45 days. Amended returns take longer. Always do. The 60-day review notice came by mail. Not email. Check your mailbox daily. Don't rely on informed delivery. Some notices don't show up there.

•Did you have to do anything special after receiving the notice? I'm wondering if there are specific steps I should prepare for once I get mine. Also, did you call them at any point during those 45 days to check on status?

•I got my notice after about 40 days too. I remember because it was right after I had given up checking the mail every day! I wonder if there's any pattern to how they prioritize these notices? Like maybe they process them by region or by the type of tax situation?

I filed on February 4th and received my ID verification letter on March 18th - exactly 42 days later. Called the IRS on March 19th and spent 3 hours on hold before getting disconnected. Tried again March 21st with the same result. Finally used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) on March 23rd and got through to an agent in about 30 minutes who confirmed my amended return was in the system but flagged for manual review. The agent was able to verify my identity over the phone rather than waiting for me to respond to the letter. This saved me at least another 30 days of waiting according to the agent. Frustrating process but at least I got answers.

In my somewhat limited experience with amended returns, the verification notices seem to be taking approximately 30-45 days to arrive, though this can possibly vary depending on your specific tax situation and perhaps the current IRS workload. I received my notice around day 38, if I recall correctly. It might be worth noting that electronic filing typically results in faster processing than paper filing, though amended returns generally take longer regardless of submission method.

I've been through both regular returns and amended returns, and the difference in timing is substantial. My regular return verification came in 3 weeks, while my amended return took 7 weeks for the notice to arrive. Compared to pre-pandemic times, everything is still running about 30% slower. Here's what to expect: the letter will come via USPS, will have a response deadline (usually 30 days from the letter date, not when you receive it), and will include options for online verification, phone verification, or in-person at a Taxpayer Assistance Center. If you're approaching 8 weeks with no communication, I'd recommend calling the Amended Return hotline at 866-464-2050 rather than the general line. They have more specific information about amended return status.

•Seven weeks just for a notice to arrive? How is anyone supposed to plan their finances when the IRS moves at the speed of a glacier? Did calling that specific amended return number actually help you get through faster than the regular line?

•I had no idea there was a specific amended return hotline! This is my first time dealing with an amended return and I've been calling the regular number. No wonder I couldn't get any specific information about my situation. Thanks for sharing this - definitely going to try that number instead.

I received my ID verification notice exactly 29 days after filing my amended return. Called immediately, verified my identity, and my refund was deposited 14 days later. Have you checked your tax transcript online? Did you e-file or paper file? What specific forms did you amend? Did you claim any credits that might trigger additional review?

•Oh my gosh, I'm feeling so anxious now! I'm at day 35 with no notice yet. I'm worried something went wrong with my filing. Do you think I should be concerned that I haven't received anything yet? I'm starting to worry they never received my amended return at all!

•Thanks for sharing your timeline! That's actually really helpful to know. I've been checking my mailbox like a hawk every day... my spouse thinks I've lost my mind lol. But at least now I have a better idea of what to expect. Hopefully mine comes through soon too!

The IRS is taking 35-50 days for identity verification notices on amended returns this year. No exceptions. Paper notices only. No email. No portal alerts. Check your mail daily. Amended returns with credits take the longest. If you haven't received anything by day 60, call them. Expect 2+ hour wait times. Keep your amended return confirmation number ready. They won't help without it.

I received a CP75 examination notice (which is a form of 60-day review) approximately 47 days after submitting my amended return. The notice specifically requested additional documentation for Schedule C expenses and itemized deductions. Be aware that these notices often have response deadlines that begin from the date of issuance rather than receipt, so monitor your mail vigilantly. If you've established an online account with the IRS, I recommend checking your transcript for transaction code 424, which indicates an examination has been initiated, or code 570, which indicates a hold has been placed on your account pending review.

It might be worth noting that, in my experience, verification notices for amended returns seem to be taking longer than usual this filing season. I received mine after approximately 52 days, though this may not necessarily be representative of everyone's experience. The IRS appears to be prioritizing standard returns over amendments, which could potentially explain some of the delays people are reporting. If you haven't received correspondence after 60 days, it might be prudent to contact the IRS, though be prepared for potentially significant wait times when calling.

I'm currently at day 38 since filing my amended return and still waiting for any notice. Reading through everyone's experiences here is both reassuring and nerve-wracking - it seems like 30-50 days is pretty typical, but the uncertainty is killing me! I've been checking my mailbox obsessively and even signed up for USPS Informed Delivery, though I see some folks mentioned notices don't always show up there. Has anyone had success checking their IRS transcript online to see if there are any codes indicating a review has started? I'm wondering if that might give me a heads up before the physical notice arrives. Also, for those who eventually got through to the IRS by phone - did you call right at 7 AM when they open, or is there a better time to avoid the longest wait times?

•I'm in a similar boat - day 42 here and still anxiously checking the mail! From what I've gathered reading everyone's experiences, it sounds like you're still well within the normal range. I actually did check my transcript online last week and found a code 570 (account freeze) which at least confirmed something was happening behind the scenes, even though no physical notice had arrived yet. As for calling times, I've had the best luck calling right at 7 AM sharp - I set three alarms and hit redial the moment they open. The wait times are still brutal, but definitely shorter than calling later in the day. Hang in there - it sounds like most people are getting their notices between weeks 5-7!

I'm at day 41 since filing my amended return and still no notice here either! This thread has been incredibly helpful - it's reassuring to know I'm not alone in this waiting game. Based on everyone's experiences, it seems like 30-50 days is the current norm, which means I should hopefully see something soon. I've been religiously checking my online transcript every few days and finally saw a transaction code 971 show up last week, which I believe indicates they've sent a notice. Now I'm just waiting for it to actually arrive in my mailbox. For what it's worth, I called the amended return hotline at 866-464-2050 (thanks @Hazel Garcia for that tip!) and while I still waited 2.5 hours, I did get through and the agent confirmed my return was received and is in the review queue. They couldn't give me an exact timeline but said notices are currently taking 6-8 weeks to be mailed out. Hang in there everyone - sounds like we're all in the same boat!

•Thank you so much for sharing that amended return hotline number and your experience with it! I've been calling the general IRS line and getting nowhere fast - literally spending entire afternoons on hold just to get disconnected. It's really encouraging to hear that the 866-464-2050 number actually connects you to agents who can provide specific information about amended returns. I'm definitely going to try that number tomorrow morning. The 6-8 week timeline the agent gave you actually aligns pretty well with what most people are reporting here, so that gives me some peace of mind. I'm at day 36 myself, so hopefully I'll see something in the next couple of weeks. Thanks again for taking the time to call and share what you learned - this kind of real-world intel is so much more valuable than the generic timelines on the IRS website!
