Discovered $2,510 SSA Overpayment From Childhood Disability - Will They Take My Tax Refund?

Just logged into my SSA account to get a replacement card and discovered an overpayment balance from when I received disability as a minor. The SSA website shows "You are not currently receiving payments" but with a warning icon that says "You have an outstanding overpayment to repay." According to the notice on my account, "An overpayment occurs when Social Security pays you more than you should have been paid. An overpayment notice has been sent to you by mail that explains why you have been overpaid, your repayment options, and your appeal and waiver rights." My overpayment amount is showing as $2,610.57. The site mentions "If there has been a recent change, the amount displayed may not be the most current amount" and has a link to learn more about overpayments. I got disability benefits until I was around 15. No idea how long this balance has been there or why I would be responsible for an overpayment from when I was a kid. I don't remember ever receiving any notice in the mail about this. I only found this when I logged in to the secure.ssa.gov website to request a replacement card. Really worried they're going to take my tax refund. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Can they really hold me responsible for an overpayment from when I was a minor? What are my options for appealing this or getting a waiver since I had no control over my benefits as a child?

Katherine Harris

SSA overpayments from childhood benefits typically can't be collected from you - they should be the responsibility of the representative payee (usually your parent/guardian) who managed the benefits. You should contact SSA immediately to dispute this. Request a waiver form SSA-632 and explain you were a minor during the overpayment period.

Check your transcript ASAP to see if there's already an offset indicator. That'll tell you if they're planning to take your refund.

Log into irs.gov and look at your account transcript. Look for any TC898 codes
