Question regarding Tax Topic 203. Yesterday updated with 846 code for Feb 22. Today updated to the Tax Topic 203 message. I’ve seen others with it.  I only have student loan which they aren’t supposed to take till May and I have a Dept of NY Labor debt. I figured they would take that one but they didn’t last year either.  Is it common to not see it on but only and they will send or will update again with 898 Code for the later? Any help appreciated.

Let me help break this down for you. When you see an 846 code with a (Direct Deposit Date) but then get Tax Topic 203, it usually means there's going to be an - meaning part or all of your refund will be taken to pay a debt. The fact that it's not showing on your yet with an 898 code is pretty common - sometimes the codes show up later. With student loans currently in forbearance until May, it's likely the Dept of NY Labor debt that's triggering this. I'd recommend checking out taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) - it's pretty good at analyzing these situations and can tell you exactly what's happening with your refund and any potential offsets. I've been using it to help people understand their better.

Hello Ashley:) Yes this is very common right now. There is many mistakes on the Student Loan's and the new payment due dates. Tax Topic 203, is basically warning you that they more than likely will be taking a portion or maybe all of your Tax Return to satisfy any State or Federal agency's debts that you may owe. I would call your Loan Service Provider and see if they can remove that unitl May as that is the agreement that was passed. Once the decides to take that from your Tax Return, you will receive an updated with the Code 898 advising you the has been taken to settle those debts.
