Transcript shows 846 for May 5th but WMR shows offset message - No debts found?
My transcript updated yesterday. Shows 846 code for 5/5. No offsets visible. Checked WMR this morning. Approved for payment. But offset message appeared. Called the offset line. They said no debt. Checked Treasury website too. Says return isn't processed yet. I know I owe $378 in state taxes. Could that be the offset? How can I confirm?

I went through exactly 3 stages of panic with this same issue. My transcript showed a refund of $2,873 with code 846 dated April 12th. WMR showed the offset message saying $1,245 would be taken. I called the TOP offset line exactly 7 times before getting through. They confirmed I had $0 in federal debts. The state tax debt of $378 wouldn't affect your federal refund this way - states handle their own collections. The WMR offset message disappeared exactly 48 hours later, and I received my full refund on the date shown by code 846. Such a relief after all that stress!

Thank you for sharing this! I've been freaking out seeing the same thing happen. The IRS systems seem to be having a little identity crisis this season. š It's so helpful to hear from someone who went through the exact same thing and got their full refund in the end.

I might add that I've seen this happen several times this filing season. The TOP system and WMR don't always sync properly. In my experience, the transcript is generally more reliable than WMR. If TOP says you have no debts, you should be fine. I'd advise waiting 48-72 hours for the systems to synchronize.

This sort of happened to me too, and it was probably the most frustrating experience ever. The systems just don't communicate well sometimes. I called the regular IRS number for days and couldn't get through. Eventually used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got connected to an agent in about 25 minutes. They explained that it was basically a system glitch - the offset warning appears automatically in some cases but doesn't necessarily mean there's an actual offset. The agent confirmed my full amount was coming. Might be worth a call just to confirm and get peace of mind.

I need my refund by May 10th at the latest! Did using this service actually help resolve anything or just confirm what you already knew? I've already wasted 3 days trying to get through to someone!

Did the IRS agent actually have access to see if there was a real offset or were they just guessing? I've had agents tell me things before that turned out to be wrong. How quickly after your call did you actually receive your refund?

What's the TOP offset line number? I'm curious if I should try both approaches - calling TOP directly and using Claimyr to reach the main IRS line. This discrepancy between transcript and WMR is making me nervous.

The WMR offset notification is triggered by specific Transaction Codes on your account. TC 898 indicates an offset is pending, while TC 896 shows the actual reduction. If your transcript doesn't show either of these codes, it's likely a system synchronization error between the Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS) and the WMR interface. Can you verify if you see any TC 898 or TC 896 codes on your transcript?

I've been dealing with IRS issues for years and never heard about these specific codes. This is incredibly helpful information. I'll be checking for these codes on my own transcript now.

I had this exact issue last year. Called for days with no answers. Finally, I used taxr.ai to analyze my transcript. It immediately identified that I had no offset codes (like 898 or 896) and explained that WMR sometimes shows generic messages that don't match what's actually happening. The site predicted my exact deposit date based on the 846 code. I've been recommending it to everyone since then - it saved me so much stress trying to interpret all those codes and numbers.

I'm not convinced this is just a glitch. The IRS systems are like an iceberg - what you see is only a fraction of what's happening. There could be a pending offset that hasn't fully processed in the system yet. These offset notices are like storm warnings - sometimes the storm passes, but it's worth preparing. Have you checked with your state tax authority directly? Sometimes the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing between federal and state systems.

Let me clarify how the offset process actually works: 1. First, a creditor agency notifies the Treasury Offset Program (TOP) about your debt. 2. TOP then matches your information against tax refunds being processed. 3. If a match is found, TOP notifies the IRS to reduce your refund. 4. The IRS then places TC 898 (pending offset) on your account. 5. When the offset is applied, TC 896 appears with the offset amount. 6. Finally, TC 846 is issued for the remaining amount. Since your transcript shows 846 with no prior offset codes, and TOP confirmed no debts, this is almost certainly a WMR display error. The WMR system occasionally pulls generic messaging that doesn't reflect your actual account status. Your state tax debt would not trigger a federal offset unless it was referred to TOP, which is rare for standard state tax debts.

Important additional information: ā¢ TOP only processes debts that are 180+ days delinquent ā¢ State tax debts typically only offset state refunds, not federal ā¢ WMR updates only once every 24 hours ā¢ Transcript data is more real-time and reliable ā¢ The 846 code with date is the most definitive indicator of when and how much you'll receive

I had this happen. Called TOP. No debts. Called IRS. No offsets. WMR still showed offset message. Got full refund on 846 date. System lag caused the confusion. Nothing to worry about. Keep checking bank account. Money will arrive on date shown on transcript.

This happens in about 1 in 20 returns I've seen this year. The WMR database and the actual IRS processing systems are like two different countries that communicate by carrier pigeon. I had a client with the exact same situation - 846 code for $4,200, WMR showing offset, TOP confirming no debts. Compared to other tax issues, this is actually a good one to have - in every case I've seen, the full amount from the 846 code was deposited on the date shown.

Pls be careful abt assuming everything is ok! My bro had similar sitch last yr - transcript looked fine w/ 846 code but ended up w/ surprise offset. His issue was child support from another state that didn't show up when he called TOP. Might wanna double check if u have ANY potential debts (student loans, child support, old state taxes from other states, etc). Better to be prepared than surprised when deposit hits and it's less than expected.

According to Internal Revenue Manual 21.4.6, the Treasury Offset Program (TOP) is required by law to provide pre-offset notices to taxpayers before any refund offset occurs. Pursuant to IRC Ā§ 6402, taxpayers must be given opportunity to resolve or dispute potential offsets. The fact that you received no pre-offset notice and TOP confirms no debts strongly suggests this is a system error. I was surprised to learn that approximately 8% of offset notices on WMR are false positives according to Taxpayer Advocate Service data.

I went through this exact scenario in March! The IRS.gov website has a page about this: https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc203. In my case, I called both the TOP line (800-304-3107) and checked my account transcript. No offsets showing anywhere but WMR. My full refund hit my account exactly on the 846 date. The IRS systems seem to be having more of these display errors this year based on what I've read in the r/IRS community. Just keep an eye on your bank account on May 5th!
