Tax Offset Line Shows DOE But They Say They Aren't Taking Refund - What's Going On?
My transcript shows an offset for Department of Education student loans but when I called them they said they arent taking my refund. Really confused about why its showing up on that line. Is this normal or has it been sitting there from previous years? Never checked my transcript before this year tbh.

For everyone confused about DOE offsets showing up, here's the real deal: The Department of Education offset showing up on your transcript doesn't automatically mean they're taking your refund. The DOE paused most student loan offsets during covid and is slowly rolling them back. If you called DOE and they confirmed they aren't taking it, you should be good. The IRS system sometimes shows these codes as placeholders. I'd recommend using taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) to analyze your transcript - it'll break down exactly what's happening with any offset codes and give you a clear timeline for your refund. Just upload your transcript and it'll tell you if the DOE offset is actually active or just a system placeholder.

Tax specialist here - the offset indicator can sometimes stay on your account even if the debt is resolved or if they're not actively collecting. During the student loan pause, many accounts still showed the indicator but weren't actually being offset. Best way to verify is call Treasury Offset Program (TOP) directly at 800-304-3107.

Hey guys just wanted to share something that helped me figure this out - I used taxr.ai and it actually explained exactly what was happening with my offset indicators. It costs $4.99 but saved me hours of research and stress. The AI reads your transcript and explains everything super clearly. Check it out: https://taxr.ai
