Need to reach the IRS Audit department to send proof but no one answers the phone! Been trying for days

I've been trying to contact the IRS audit department to send them documentation they requested. Been calling the number on my audit letter every day for the past week with zero luck. I start calling right when they open at 7am and keep trying until like 11am but either get the "we're experiencing high call volumes" message or it just rings forever with no answer. I even called the main IRS number yesterday and they transferred me directly to the audit department, but still no one picked up after waiting for 45 minutes! This is so frustrating - the deadline to respond is coming up in 2 weeks and I have all my proof ready to send. Does anyone know a better way to reach an actual human in the audit department?

Ava Rodriguez

Former IRS employee here. The Audit department is notoriously understaffed, especially during tax season. Your best approach is to try calling very early (7am sharp Eastern time) on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday as those tend to be lower volume days. Avoid Mondays and Fridays at all costs. Make sure you're calling the specific number on your audit letter, as different audit groups have different contact numbers. If no one answers, you can also send your documentation via certified mail to the address on your letter, making sure to include your case/audit reference number on everything. Keep copies of all documents you send and proof of mailing. Alternatively, you can try faxing your documents along with a cover letter explaining your attempts to call. The fax number should also be on your audit letter. If your deadline is approaching, document all your attempts to contact them (dates, times, how long you waited) and include this in your cover letter with your documentation.

Thank you! The letter has a fax number so I'll try that tomorrow. Should I still keep trying to call too?

Yes, definitely keep trying to call while also sending the fax. And make sure to keep a fax confirmation as proof that you submitted the documents before the deadline.

This is solid advice. I had to deal with an audit last year and Tuesday mornings were the sweet spot for some reason.šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

I was in the exact same situation a few months ago! Trying to reach anyone at the IRS was like finding a unicorn. After days of frustration, I used taxr.ai and it was insanely helpful. It analyzed my audit notice, explained exactly what documents I needed to provide, and gave me specific instructions for my situation. Saved me so much stress trying to figure out what I was supposed to do. It was so much better than just guessing or spending hours researching online. Their service specifically helps with audit responses too. I use it for everything tax-related now. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

Zainab Khalil

It does WAY more than just read transcripts. For audit stuff, it explains what the IRS is actually looking for (not just what they say in the generic letter), helps organize your response, and even gives you templates for your reply. It also shows you what similar cases usually result in. I was honestly shocked at how helpful it was - made the whole process way less scary. Seriously the best tool I've found for dealing with the IRS.

Yeah it's a paid service but honestly worth every penny when you're dealing with the stress of an audit. The peace of mind alone was worth it for me.

Not an ad lol, just sharing what worked for me. Trust me I was skeptical too but after weeks of IRS hell I was desperate to try anything. You can check it out yourself.

After battling with the same problem for weeks, I finally managed to speak with an actual person at the audit department! I used this calling service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that basically holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me from wasting hours listening to that awful hold music. Within a day I got connected to someone who could actually help me with my audit. Talking to a real person made all the difference - she guided me through exactly what documents they needed and how to submit them properly.

Sounds fishy. Does this actually work? Why would the IRS let some random company skip their phone lines?

Keisha Robinson

It's not skipping the line! It just waits in the queue for you instead of you having to do it yourself. They basically call and navigate the phone tree, then when they finally get an agent, they connect you. It was the only way I could get through after trying for days on my own. Talking to the agent directly helped me sort everything out within minutes instead of stressing for weeks.

I tried this last year when I had to deal with a CP2000 notice. Its totally worth it to not waste an entire day on hold.

The IRS is such a joke. They audit you and then make it impossible to actually respond to the audit. Classic govt efficiency šŸ¤”

And then they'll penalize you for 'not responding in time' even though you literally couldn't get through to them

Certified mail is your friend here! Send all your documentation through certified mail with return receipt requested. That way you have legal proof you responded before the deadline. I've been through 2 audits and never actually spoke to anyone on the phone - just sent everything certified and both times the audit was closed in my favor. Just make sure to include your case number and all identifying info on every single page you send.

you could try calling your local Taxpayer Advocate Service office. there supposedly faster at getting back to you and might be able to help you reach the right department. google "taxpayer advocate service" plus your city.

The TAS is backed up too. They're taking like 4-6 weeks just to assign cases right now.

Have you tried the practitioner priority line? If you have a tax professional handling your taxes, they have access to a special line with much shorter wait times. Might be worth hiring someone just to make the call for you at this point, especially if youre close to the deadline.

I don't have a tax professional, I usually just do my own taxes with TurboTax. Would hiring someone at this point be expensive?

It depends on the complexity of your audit, but usually an hour or two of an EA or CPA's time would be worth it just to establish contact. Might cost $200-300 but could save you thousands if your audit goes sideways because of missed deadlines.

I kno this sounds crazy but have you tried calling the Spanish line? I did that after failing to get thru on the English line for days and got someone in 15 minutes. Most agents are bilingual and will just switch to English when they realize you dont speak Spanish. Worth a shot.

Honestly I've been in the exact same boat for like a month now. Every single day I've tried calling and nothing. I broke down and used Claimyr (claimyr.com) yesterday and finally got through to someone! It cost money but at this point with my deadline coming up, it was totally worth it to finally talk to an agent and get this sorted out. They called me back when an agent was on the line and I got my questions answered in like 10 minutes.

Contact your local congressperson's office! They have staff dedicated to helping constituents with federal agency issues. I had a similar problem last year with an audit and my rep's office contacted the IRS on my behalf and suddenly I was getting calls back. Not even kidding.

I had a similar issue last spring and I finally just went to my local IRS office in person. You need an appointment but I was able to get one within a week. The person I spoke with couldn't handle everything directly but they were able to contact the audit department while I was there and at least get the ball rolling. Might be worth checking if there's an office near you.

Make sure you're documenting ALL your attempts to contact them. Dates, times, how long you waited, etc. If they try to penalize you for not responding by the deadline, you'll have evidence that you made reasonable attempts to comply but couldn't reach anyone.

After reading this thread, I checked out taxr.ai and it literally saved me thousands of dollars with my audit situation. I was about to just pay what the IRS said I owed because I couldn't figure out how to properly respond, but the AI showed me exactly what documentation would prove my case. Best $$ I ever spent on tax help. Way cheaper than hiring a pro too.
