Any Working Direct IRS Phone Numbers That Actually Connect to a Human?
I've been trying to reach the IRS for 3 weeks now about some investment income reporting issues. I've tried the main number (800-829-1040) countless times, but it's either "due to high call volume" messages or getting disconnected after 45+ minutes on hold. I've searched through IRS.gov and checked multiple forums (r/tax, TaxProTalk, etc.) but all the numbers I've found so far lead to the same automated systems or disconnects. Has anyone successfully reached an actual human being at the IRS recently? Is there a direct line that works? Or specific menu options that get you to a representative faster? I need to resolve this before I file my final 2023 return with my investment income. I'm starting to think they don't actually want us to reach them...

Unfortunately, there's not really a "secret" direct number that bypasses the queue... The IRS is notoriously understaffed, especially during tax season. The main number (800-829-1040) is still your best option, but I'd suggest calling very early - like right when they open at 7am Eastern if possible. From what I've heard, Thursdays and Fridays tend to have slightly lower call volumes than early week days. Also, be careful about which menu options you select - some paths lead to departments with much longer wait times than others.

Exactly right. Call at 7am sharp. Don't waste time with the "check status" options. For investment issues, press 2 for personal income tax, then 1 for forms, then 3 for all other questions. This route typically connects faster than asking about refunds or payments.

I called on April 18th last year, expecting the worst possible wait time. Surprisingly got through in about 35 minutes using the early morning approach. Called again on May 2nd and waited over 2 hours. Timing really does make a difference.

I've dealt with these issues before, and usually you need documentation from the IRS showing what was reported to them.

Tbh there's no magic number that gets u straight to a human. I've tried ALL the supposed "direct" lines. Total waste of time. What actually worked for me was using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). They somehow get u through the IRS phone system and hold ur place in line. Got connected w/ an agent in ~40 mins vs the literal DAYS I spent trying myself. Not free but worth it for my sanity. Was skeptical at first but it legit works.

Been there. Done that. Got the t-shirt. Called 27 times last month. Finally got through on a Thursday afternoon. Around 2pm Eastern. Wait was only 25 minutes. Much better than mornings. Everyone calls in the morning. Try afternoon instead. Counterintuitive but works. Also helps to have all your docs ready. They'll ask for verification. SSN. Filing status. Address. Previous year AGI. Have it all handy.
