NJ state refunds are definitely running behind this year. Here's what you need to know: 1. First, check your status at the official NJ Division of Taxation website (https://www.nj.gov/treasury/taxation/) 2. Current processing time for e-filed returns is 4-6 weeks for most filers, which is longer than previous years 3. If you filed on 3/10, you're just hitting that 4-week mark now, so it's still within normal timeframes 4. Paper returns are taking 8-10 weeks minimum I filed mine on February 28th and just received my direct deposit yesterday. The online status never updated until after I got the money.

Do you know if there's any way to get an estimated deposit date from the NJ website? The IRS tool gives you a specific date, but I can't find anything similar for NJ. I filed on March 8th and need to plan around when this money might arrive!

Thanks for laying this out so clearly! I filed on March 1st and was getting worried, but now I see I'm still within that normal timeframe. Definitely longer than last year when I got my refund in just 2 weeks!

Have you tried calling them directly? I was in the same boat and finally got through after trying a few different options on their menu system. The wait was about 40 minutes but they confirmed my return was processing normally. Did you e-file or paper file? And did you have any credits or deductions that might trigger additional review?

I've tried calling three separate times and couldn't get through. Kept getting disconnected after waiting 30+ minutes. Their phone system seems completely overwhelmed this year.

i had the same issue last yr w/ NJ state taxes. took almost 8 wks to get my refund even tho i e-filed in Feb. what worked for me was using their online msg system through the taxpayer portal. got a response in 3 days confirming everything was ok, just delayed. worth a try if u can't get thru on phone!

It might be worth considering Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) if you need to actually speak with someone at the NJ Division of Taxation. While the service was primarily designed for IRS calls, many users have reported success using it for state tax agencies as well. The service essentially navigates the phone tree and waits on hold for you, then calls you when an agent is actually available. It's particularly helpful for gig workers who can't afford to sit on hold for hours during working hours.

Is this really necessary for state taxes though? Wouldn't it be easier to just visit a local tax office in person if you're that concerned? And do we know if this actually works specifically for NJ tax department calls?

Used this last week. Got through in 25 minutes. Never would have happened otherwise. NJ tax line disconnected me twice before trying this. Worth every penny.

I've been filing NJ taxes for over a decade, and in my experience, returns filed in March always take longer than those filed in February. Last year I filed on March 5th and didn't get my refund until May 1st. The year before that, I filed in February and got it within 3 weeks. I think they prioritize early filers, then get swamped with the March rush as deadline approaches. As long as your Where's My Refund status shows "received" or "processing," you're probably fine.

I tracked my NJ refund processing times for the past 3 years: - 2022: Filed February 12, received refund in exactly 17 days - 2023: Filed March 1, received refund in exactly 29 days - 2024: Filed February 8, received refund in exactly 42 days This year is definitely running 13-15 days slower than previous years. If you filed on March 10th, I would expect your refund around April 21-25 based on current processing patterns.

You're spot on with those timelines. I filed on February 15th this year and got my refund yesterday - exactly 41 days later. Last year it only took 24 days for basically the identical return. They're definitely backed up this season.

Does anyone know if having multiple W-2s affects processing time? I had 3 different gig jobs last year plus a part-time regular job. Wondering if that's why mine seems to be taking forever??

According to the New Jersey Division of Taxation guidelines (N.J.A.C. 18:35-6.1), they are required to issue refunds within 6 weeks of filing for electronic returns that don't require additional review. However, per their February 2024 announcement, they've acknowledged system delays and staffing issues impacting this timeline. If your return contained any of the following, it may be subject to additional review: - Earned Income Tax Credit claims - Property Tax Credit claims - Multiple sources of income requiring verification - Prior year tax issues They've also stated that returns filed after March 1st may experience longer processing times due to volume.

I'm in the exact same boat with my NJ return. Filed March 8th and still nothing. What's concerning me is that I know someone who filed AFTER me (March 15th) and already got their refund yesterday! Makes me wonder if there's something wrong with my return that's causing a delay. Last year I had an issue where they needed additional verification of my gig work income and I had to upload documents, but they at least sent me a notice about it. This year it's just silence.

Have you checked your status on the NJ Division of Taxation website? Sometimes the generic "processing" message doesn't tell the whole story. I found out my return was actually on hold because they were missing a document (that I definitely submitted 🙄). Called them and got it sorted in one day, refund came a week later. Also, if you're really desperate for the cash, you might want to look into tax refund advances for next year. I know it's too late now, but as a fellow gig worker, I've used them before when things were tight. Yeah, the fees suck, but sometimes you need that money now, not when the state decides to finally process your return! 😂
