My transcript shows 'requested for non filing' but I definitely filed my taxes - what does this mean?

I submitted my taxes back in April 2024 and got my confirmation email. I was expecting my refund by now but nothing has shown up. I decided to check my transcript today and noticed something weird - it says 'requested for non filing' on it. This has never happened before in all my years of filing taxes. I'm 100% certain I filed on time and have the confirmation from the tax software. Has anyone seen this before? Does it mean they lost my return? I'm really concerned because I'm counting on that refund money for some upcoming expenses.

This doesn't necessarily mean your return was lost. The 'requested for non filing' code typically appears when the IRS system shows that a return hasn't been processed yet - even if you did submit it. It usually means one of three things: 1. Your return is still in the processing queue and hasn't been fully entered into their system 2. Your return may have been flagged for review, causing a processing delay 3. There might have been an issue with the electronic submission that prevented proper receipt First step: check your e-file confirmation and make sure it shows 'accepted' not just 'submitted'. If it was accepted, you have proof your return was received. Second: Wait about 2-3 more weeks as processing times are extended this year. If nothing changes, you'll need to contact the IRS directly. You can try calling, but prepare for long wait times. Alternatively, you can create an account on irs.gov to track your refund status more precisely.

Thanks for the detailed response! My confirmation does say 'accepted' so at least I know they got it. I'll give it another couple weeks before panicking.

This happened to me last year and it turned out that my return got flagged for identity verification. check if u need to do ID verify.

0 coins

How did you find out you needed to verify your identity? Did they send you a letter?

0 coins

yeah got a letter maybe 3 weeks after filing. but you can also check online if you have an irs account

Listen, stop stressing about trying to figure this out on your own. I tried that for weeks and got nowhere... just spinning my wheels reading forums and transcript codes. I finally tried this tool called taxr.ai that explained my transcript and situation perfectly. It told me exactly what was happening with my return and why I had the same 'non filing' code. Turns out it was just a processing delay on their end. The tool told me exactly when to expect my refund based on my transcript codes. Saved me so much time and stress! https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It reads your transcript and then explains everything in plain english. It tells you what each code means for YOUR specific situation, not just generic explanations. It also gives you a timeline of whats happened and what to expect next. I was super impressed cuz I spent hours on google trying to decode mine and got nowhere.

Just tried it and WOW this is amazing!! I've been trying to understand my transcript for weeks and this broke it down in seconds. 100% worth it for the peace of mind alone. Thanks for the recommendation!

is this some kind of paid service? seems sus that people are hyping it so much

0 coins

Yeah its a paid service but tbh its worth every penny. I spent hours on hold with the IRS trying to figure this out and got nowhere. This tool explained everything in like 2 minutes lol

After dealing with a similar issue, I finally got through to a real person at the IRS using claimyr.com - it basically gets you to the front of the phone queue. The agent told me that sometimes returns get marked as 'non filed' while they're still in processing or if there's a minor issue they're fixing. In my case, they had to manually match my return to my account. Talking directly with an agent saved me weeks of anxiety. Best decision I made was just calling them directly instead of trying to decode the transcript myself.

wait does this actually work? ive tried calling the IRS like 20 times and always get the 'call back later' message 🤬

0 coins

Yes it actually works! I was skeptical too but was desperate. They basically call the IRS for you and navigate through all the phone prompts, then when they get a human they connect you. I had tried for 3 weeks straight before finding this and got through same day. Talking to an agent solved my issue in 15 mins.

0 coins

How long did you have to wait? The IRS phone system is literally designed to make you give up.

0 coins

I got a callback in about an hour. WAY better than the 3+ hour hold times I was experiencing before. The agent was actually super helpful too, explained exactly what was happening with my 'non filing' status.

I might try this if my issue doesnt resolve soon, thanks for the tip!

Just chiming in to say I had the exact same thing happen this year and it turned out there was a mismatch between my SSN and name formatting in their system. The crazy thing is nobody told me - I just kept checking my transcript and one day it updated and my refund came a week later. Check your transcript every couple days, sometimes it just takes time.

0 coins

Quick question - did you efile or mail in your return? If you mailed it, that could explian this becuz the IRS is sooooo behind on paper returns right now.

0 coins

I efiled through TaxAct on April 10. Got the confirmation right away so I thought everything was fine until I checked the transcript today.

0 coins

then you should be good. probably just processing delays 👍 Try checking your Where's My Refund on the IRS site, sometimes it has different info from the transcript

0 coins

Are you sure your return was actually ACCEPTED and not just received? Big difference. If you filed through a third party service they usually send two emails - one saying it was submitted to the IRS and another saying the IRS accepted it. If you only got the first one, your return might have been rejected due to an error.

0 coins

Just double checked and my email says "Your federal return has been accepted by the IRS" so I think that part is good at least

0 coins

Good. Check your transcript for code 570 or 971 - those would indicate there's an issue they're working on. If you don't see those, it's probably just in the processing queue.

I had a similar issue in may 2024. when I calld (after literally 14 attempts omg) the IRS they explained that sometimes returns get marked that way when theyre reviewing them manually or if theres a discrepancy. In my case I messed up entering my stimulus payment amount and they had to adjust it. took about 6 weeks total to get my refund.

0 coins

Does your transcript have any other codes on it? The 'requested for non filing' doesnt tell the whole story. Look for codes like 570, 971, 420, etc - those would give more clues about whats happening.

0 coins

I see codes 150, 806, 766, and also something that says 'no record of return filed' at the top. No 570 or 971 that I can find though.

0 coins

The 150 means a return has been processed, which is weird with the 'no record of return filed' message. Sounds like their system is confused. You might want to use a service like taxr.ai to explain your specific transcript situation. Helped me figure out my weird codes.

the IRS is a COMPLETE DISASTER this year 🤡 I filed in February and just got my refund last week. They had my return the whole time but their system showed it as 'not received' for 3 months. Keep all your filing receipts and confirmation emails in case you need to prove you actually filed.

0 coins

Truth! The IRS is running on computers from the 1960s and is understaffed by like 50%. It's amazing they function at all tbh

0 coins

literally. i read somewhere they still use COBOL programming language. like wtf is this, the stone age? 💀

I work in tax preparation. This message often happens when there's a system delay in processing. However, I've also seen it when clients think they filed but their preparer never actually submitted the return (happened at one of the big chain tax places). Double check that your return was actually submitted AND accepted - those are two different things. Also check if you got confirmation from the IRS or just from your tax software.

0 coins

Try using taxr.ai to analyze your transcript. I had a similar issue and could NOT figure out what was happening. The tool told me exactly what codes to look for and what my timeline would be. Saved me sooo much stress and guesswork!

0 coins

Can this actually explain what the different codes mean? I've been googling IRS codes for days and getting nowhere

0 coins

Yep! It explains each code specifically for your situation, not just general info. It also gives you a timeline of what's happened with your return and what to expect next. Made so much more sense than the generic explanations I found online.

CALL THE IRS NOW. dont wait. I had this happen and waited (big mistake). turns out someone else tried to file using my info. Had to go through identity theft procedures and it took 7 months to get my refund.

0 coins

Yikes that's scary. How did you finally get through to them to fix it?

0 coins

After trying for weeks, I used claimyr.com to get connected to an agent. They actually got me through to a real person same day. Without that I'd probably still be trying to get through.

0 coins

this could also be an issue with the tax software you used. some cheaper services have been having problems transmitting returns correctly to the IRS this year. Which software did you use to file?

0 coins

I used TaxAct. I've been using them for years without any issues, so I'm surprised if that's the problem.

My wife and I dealt with this exact same thing three weeks ago. After trying the IRS phone line 7 times, we finally used claimyr.com to get through to an agent. Turns out our return was sitting in their system but needed manual review because of a healthcare tax credit issue. The agent was able to push it through, and we got our refund 9 days later. Definitely worth talking to a human rather than trying to decipher transcript codes yourself.

0 coins

Hmm. What's this claimyr thing exactly? Another paid service?

0 coins

It basically helps you get through to an actual IRS agent instead of getting the dreaded "call volume too high" message. It was the only way we could talk to a real person. Considering our refund was over $3k, it was the best money I've spent all year to get that resolved.

0 coins

Did you move recently? Or change any major information from last year's filing? Sometimes that can trigger a 'non-filing' message because their system cant match your new info to your previous tax records.

0 coins

Check your bank account info on the return!!! my sister had this happen and it was because she had mistyped ONE digit in her routing number. The IRS couldn't deposit the refund, which triggered some internal flag and showed as 'non filing' on her transcript.

0 coins

Good point, I'll double check that. Although I used the same bank info as last year and it auto-filled in the software, so hopefully that's not it.

0 coins

Instead of stressing about transcript codes, I used taxr.ai and it explained my entire situation. I had the EXACT same issue with the 'non filing' status. The tool told me my return was in manual review and gave me an estimated timeline - which was completely accurate! Saved me so much time trying to decipher these cryptic IRS codes.

another taxr recommendation? is this like a viral marketing campaign or something 🤔

0 coins

Lol no, it's just genuinely helpful. IRS issues are super common right now so lots of people are finding solutions that work. You can keep calling the IRS 50 times if you prefer 🤷‍♀️

0 coins

I actually just checked it out and its legit. I've been trying to understand my transcript for weeks and this explained everything in like 2 minutes. Totally worth it.

0 coins

FWIW I had the same thing on my transcript in 2023 and it was because they were still processing my return. It went from "requested for non filing" to "return filed" after about 3 weeks. Try not to panic yet...the IRS is just super backed up.
