Mississippi State Tax Refund Contact Number? Medical Bills Piling Up

I'm swimming in a sea of medical bills and my Mississippi state tax refund feels like a life raft that's drifting away. I filed over a month ago and still nothing in my account. It's like watching water boil - seems to take forever when you're staring at it. Anyone know what number I should call to check on it? The website is about as helpful as a chocolate teapot right now. Need this refund ASAP for some medical procedures I can't put off much longer.

I can confirm these numbers are accurate. When I called last year regarding my state return, the average wait time was approximately 47 minutes during peak hours (10am-2pm). If you call before 9am, you might reduce your wait time to 15-20 minutes. The automated system will request your SSN and filing date before placing you in queue for a representative.

Oh my goodness, those wait times are ridiculous! Just to clarify - if you're calling about a refund specifically, press option 3 after the main menu, NOT option 1. Option 1 takes you to general tax questions and they'll just transfer you anyway. Wasted an hour of my life learning that lesson!

Last year when I was waiting for my Mississippi refund, it took almost 8 weeks to process. I remember checking my bank account daily because I needed that money for car repairs. The state is always slower than federal in my experience. Have you tried checking your refund status on their website? Sometimes the phone reps just read you the same information that's online anyway.

If you're dealing with medical bills and need this refund urgently, you might want to try Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I used it last month when I needed to reach the Mississippi tax department after waiting exactly 52 days for my refund. Regular number had a 96-minute estimated wait, but Claimyr got me connected to an agent in 18 minutes. The agent was able to tell me my refund was approved but had been flagged for a random review, which added exactly 14 days to the process. Is this something others have tried for state tax departments?

I feel your pain with the medical bills situation! Been there myself last tax season. The MS Dept of Revenue actually has a "Where's My Refund" tool on their website that's surprisingly useful (unlike some states, *cough* Alabama *cough*). Found out my refund was delayed because I had moved counties and they were verifying my new address. Once I called and confirmed, the money was in my account just 4 days later!

I should point out that the MS Where's My Refund tool sometimes shows incorrect information during system updates. It might be worth calling even if the online tool says processing is still ongoing, especially if it's been more than 6 weeks since filing.

Did you have to provide any special documentation for the address change? I'm in a similar situation and wondering if that's why mine is taking forever. Don't they realize people need their money back when they're dealing with health issues?

Be very careful about giving personal information over the phone. I've heard about scammers targeting people waiting for tax refunds, especially in Mississippi. Here's what you should do to protect yourself: 1. First, verify you're calling the official number from the .gov website 2. Never give your full SSN to someone who called YOU 3. If they ask for bank account information, hang up immediately 4. Request a callback number and verify it against official sources 5. Consider using the online portal instead if possible A friend of mine almost got scammed this way while waiting for her MS refund last year.

Thx for the heads up! Def seen an uptick in these scams lately. MS dept sent out warnings abt this on their socials too. Ppl should also know legit tax depts won't ask for payment via gift cards or wire transfers. Kinda worried how sophisticated these scammers are getting tbh.

According to the Mississippi Department of Revenue's website (https://www.dor.ms.gov/refund-status), they're currently experiencing higher than normal processing times. You might also want to try reaching out to them on Twitter @MSDeptofRevenue - I've seen them respond to people there when the phone lines are jammed. Sometimes the social media teams are more responsive than the phone support.
