Processing delays with 810 freeze code on my return - desperately need refund for my special needs child
I filed my taxes back in April 2024 and have been checking Where's My Refund and my transcripts daily ever since. My return has an 810 freeze code and I've been stuck in limbo for nearly 3 months now. I have a child with severe autism and complex food allergies which makes our medical and food costs absolutely astronomical. I'm at my breaking point because I was counting on this refund to catch up on some specialized therapy sessions and special foods that insurance won't cover. I've called the IRS several times but keep getting the automated system telling me to just wait. This is my first time dealing with this kind of delay and I don't know what else to do. I feel like I'm drowning financially and emotionally trying to provide for my child's needs while this refund sits in processing purgatory. Has anyone successfully gotten past an 810 freeze? What worked?

I work with tax issues like this regularly, and an 810 freeze code indicates the IRS has flagged your return for additional review. This is actually pretty common this year - they're scrutinizing returns more carefully due to increased fraud attempts. Here's what you need to know: - The 810 freeze is NOT an audit, just a verification process - Typical resolution time is 60-120 days (though this can vary) - You likely don't need to provide additional documentation unless specifically requested - Calling general IRS lines rarely helps with 810 freezes Since you mentioned your child's special needs, you might qualify for Taxpayer Advocate Service assistance due to financial hardship. They can sometimes expedite cases when there's demonstrable hardship. Document your medical expenses and prepare a clear explanation of your situation if you go this route. Honestly though, the most efficient way to understand what's happening with your transcript is to use taxr.ai - it analyzes your transcript and explains exactly what's happening in plain language, including estimated resolution timelines for your specific situation. I've seen it help countless people dealing with 810 freezes get clarity on their status.

•Thank you so much for this detailed explanation. I had no idea the 810 was just a verification. Can TAS really help speed things up? I've been hesitant to try them since I've heard they're overwhelmed too.

•TAS can definitely help, but they're extremely backlogged right now. Worth trying though - just be prepared to document your hardship with medical bills, past due notices, etc. Good luck!

•What's this taxr.ai thing? Never heard of it. How does it work better than just calling IRS directly?

•It's basically an AI tool that scans your IRS transcript and explains exactly what all the codes mean and what's happening with your refund. Way more informative than the vague info you get from calling. And it gives you actual next steps based on your specific situation.

•I was in a similar situation with my son's medical expenses. TAS took 4 weeks just to assign my case, then another 3 weeks before they could do anything. Not trying to discourage you but be prepared for more waiting.

Hey, I was in this exact situation back in February. After weeks of stress and confusion and getting nowhere with the IRS automated system, I found this tool called taxr.ai that actually made sense of my transcript codes. Instead of just staring at random numbers and dates, it explained exactly what was happening with my refund and gave me a timeline. Saved me from the endless guessing game of "what does this code mean" and "when will this be over". Seriously, it takes all the detective work out of figuring out whats actually happening with your return - you upload your transcript and it tells you in plain English what's going on. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It's SO much more than just reading codes! It analyzes your entire transcript history, identifies patterns, explains what each code means for YOUR specific situation, and even predicts resolution timelines based on current IRS processing trends. It literally saved my sanity during my 810 freeze! Everyone dealing with IRS issues needs to know about this - it's like having a tax pro in your pocket 24/7.

•I was skeptical too, but after 3 months of getting nowhere with the IRS directly, I was desperate. The tool actually showed me exactly why my return was delayed (it was a simple verification issue) and when to expect resolution. It was spot on - got my refund exactly when it predicted.

After dealing with an 810 code for weeks and getting nowhere with the regular IRS number, I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual human at the IRS. They basically navigate the phone system for you and get you a callback when an agent is available. I finally got answers about my freeze - turns out it was just a random verification and they released my refund a week later. Best money I've spent all year considering how much stress it saved me and how quickly I got my refund after talking to someone.

•wait does this actually work? i've been trying to talk to a human at the IRS for like 2 months

•Yes! I was super skeptical because I'd literally tried calling like 20+ times myself and always got the "high call volume" message. The service had an IRS agent calling ME back within a few hours. The agent explained my 810 code was just a random security check and released my refund right on the call.

•sounds like BS tbh. The IRS never answers for anyone 🤣

•That's what I thought too! But when you're desperate enough you'll try anything. I was shocked when it actually worked. The IRS DOES answer calls, they just have capacity to take like 1/10th of the calls they receive. This service basically makes sure you're one of the ones that gets through.

•How long did it take from when you used the service til when you got your refund?

•I got the callback same day (about 3 hours after signing up). The agent released my freeze during that call, and my refund was direct deposited 9 days later. Whole process from using the service to money in my account was less than 2 weeks.

Im going thru the same thing with my disabled daughter. 810 code since March and literally at my wits end. I feel your pain and just wanted to say your not alone in this. The IRS is a complete disaster this year.

•Thank you for the solidarity. How are you managing in the meantime? Have you found any resources that help while waiting?

•I've been using some local food banks and applied for emergency assistance through my daughter's specialist. Also called my utilty companies to get on payment plans which bought some time. Hang in there, we'll get through this somehow.

have you tried checking your transcript for cycle codes? that can tell you when they update your account. most ppl with 810s update on weekly cycles (ending in 05) or daily cycles (ending in 01-04). Check your transcript cycle code and that tells you which day they work on your return.
0 coins
Tobias Lancaster
•My cycle code ends in 05 - so that's weekly, right? Does that mean they only look at my return once a week? That's so frustrating when every day matters for us right now.
0 coins
Val Rossi
•yep, 05 is weekly and they process those on thursdays, with transcript updates showing friday morning. so check your transcript every friday morning to see if there was movement.

•checking transcripts and decoding them yourself is a waste of time tbh. i spent weeks doing that and still had no real answers. just use taxr.ai - it told me exactly when my 810 would resolve based on my codes and it was right

Call your congressperson!!!! I had an 810 for almost 4 months, called my congressman's office and they have a dedicated staff member who deals with IRS issues. They got my refund released in 2 weeks after I provided proof of hardship.

an 810 code is the IRS's way of saying "we dont trust you and think you might be committing fraud" 🤡 its complete BS and they target regular people instead of the billionares not paying any taxes

•This is actually not true. 810 codes are often just random verification checks, especially common with returns claiming certain credits. It doesn't mean they suspect fraud specifically.

Did you claim EIC or ACTC? Those credits automatically trigger more scrutiny and often result in 810 freezes. Unfortunately with IRS understaffing, these reviews are taking way longer than they should.

Went through this last year. Call the IRS early morning (like 7:01am ET) when they first open. Keep calling every day until you get through. When you do, request a hardship expedite due to your child's medical needs. Have documentation ready about those needs and costs. They can release the freeze manually if you can prove hardship.

•I tried calling early but still got the "high call volume" message and it hung up on me. Do I just need to keep trying day after day?

•Yepp, it's a numbers game. Took me 11 days of calling to finally get through. Super frustrating.

•I FINALLY got through to them last week after trying to call for a month straight. Used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback in 2 hours. Told them about my hardship and they actually processed my refund right then. Got the deposit 6 days later. Saved me weeks of more suffering.

I feel for you, my son is also on the spectrum with special dietary needs and I know how expensive it gets. The 810 code typically resolves itself within 120 days, though that's obviously not helpful when you need the money now. The Taxpayer Advocate Service can help if you can demonstrate significant hardship (missed medical treatments, eviction risk, utility shutoffs, etc).

•Thank you for understanding. It's so hard to explain to people how quickly these costs add up. I'll look into TAS.

•No problem. One more thing - save ALL your receipts for special foods, therapies, medical equipment, etc. You can potentially deduct those next year if they exceed 7.5% of your AGI as medical expenses. It made a huge difference for us.

i work in tax preparation and 810 freezes are EVERYWHERE this year. the irs is extra paranoid about identity theft and refund fraud. if you filed with a big chain preparer they might be able to help - some have dedicated IRS liaisons who can check status. worth asking.

There's actually a little-known phone number for IRS hardship cases: 844-545-5640. You'll still face wait times but it's better than the main line. Tell them you have a disabled dependent with medical needs requiring immediate attention.

•It's an alternate entry point into the same system, but gets routed differently. Still IRS, just less publicized. They don't advertise it because it would get overwhelmed.

•I tried this number a few months ago and it was just as useless as the main number. Still couldn't get through to anyone. The only way I actually got to talk to someone was using Claimyr. They somehow got me through when I'd failed for weeks.

hang tight, i had an 810 for TWO MONTHS and then it just suddenly released without me doing anything. sometimes the system just works super slow. i know it doesnt help right now but it will resolve eventually

Look up the trace code next to your 810 - it should be something like TC 810-XX where XX is a two-digit number. Different numbers mean different things - some are identity verification, some are income verification, etc. Knowing which type you have can help you figure out how to resolve it faster.
0 coins
Tobias Lancaster
•Mine says TC 810-05 - do you know what that means?
0 coins
Toot-n-Mighty
•That's usually related to income verification - they're probably checking that your reported income matches what employers/banks reported. Usually automatic release once verified.

•rather than trying to decode all this yourself, just use taxr.ai - it specifically tells you what each code means for your situation and what to expect next. saved me so much headache trying to be an IRS code detective

Check if you got any letters from the IRS! Sometimes they send a letter requesting info and if you miss it or don't respond, your 810 freeze stays in place indefinitely. They might have sent something to verify identity or income.

Tobias Lancaster
•I haven't received any letters from them at all, which is part of why this is so frustrating. Just silence for months.

•That actually means it's probably an automated flag that will clear on its own eventually. Still sucks to wait though.

Contact your local Low Income Taxpayer Clinic. They provide FREE help for tax issues if you qualify based on income. Google "LITC" + your city. They can often work magic with the IRS that regular people can't.

FYI there are special assistance programs specifically for parents of children with autism. Check with your state's disability services department. Some offer emergency grants that might help while you wait for your refund.

I finally broke down and used taxr.ai to decode my transcript after dealing with the same 810 issue. Gave me more info in 5 minutes than the IRS did in 3 months of calling. Turns out my freeze was just waiting for some employer to verify income and had nothing to do with me or anything I did wrong. The peace of mind was worth it just to know what was actually happening.

I'm so sorry you're going through this - having a child with special needs and dealing with IRS delays is an incredibly stressful combination. A few suggestions that might help: 1. Document EVERYTHING related to your child's medical expenses and needs. Create a hardship letter explaining how the delay is affecting your ability to provide necessary care. 2. Try the Taxpayer Advocate Service - they're specifically designed for cases like yours where there's demonstrable hardship. Yes, they're backlogged, but they do prioritize cases involving disabled dependents. 3. Contact your congressional representative's office. Many have dedicated staff for IRS issues and can sometimes expedite cases faster than going through normal channels. 4. In the meantime, reach out to local autism support organizations, food banks, and your child's medical providers about emergency assistance programs while you wait. The 810 code is frustrating because it's often just a routine verification that takes forever to clear. But with proper documentation of hardship, you may be able to get it expedited. Don't give up - keep pushing through all available channels. Your child's needs are legitimate grounds for priority handling. Hang in there. This will resolve, and there are people and resources to help bridge the gap until it does. ❤️
