Michigan residents - how long after ID verification did your state refund arrive?

Fellow Michigan taxpayers... I'm trying to plan my budget for upcoming expenses and I'm wondering about timing. After completing the ID verification process for your Michigan state tax return, approximately how much longer did you have to wait before receiving your state refund? According to the MI Treasury website it says 2-4 weeks, but I've been reading mixed experiences on TurboTax forums and Facebook groups. Anyone go through this recently?

Verified on March 2nd. Received refund March 16th. Exactly 14 days. Michigan uses automated verification system. Processing times vary by filing method. E-file is faster. Paper returns take longer. Check MI Treasury website daily. They update status frequently.

Oh thank goodness someone with actual data! I've been stressing so much about this! Did you have to do anything special after verification or did it just automatically process? I'm still waiting after verifying last week and I'm getting so anxious 😫

This is exactly what I needed to know. I'm planning to verify tomorrow and need to know how to adjust my budget for the next few weeks. Appreciate the specific timeline.

I had a somewhat similar experience, though it took about 18 days for me. I think it might depend on how busy they are and possibly what information they needed to verify. The process seems to be running more efficiently this year than in previous tax seasons, at least from what I've seen.

I'm not sure if my experience will be helpful, but I verified my identity for my Michigan return around February 10th this year. It took approximately 3 weeks before I received my refund. I was a bit concerned because the website said 2-4 weeks, but it seems like they're generally staying within that timeframe. I would suggest perhaps planning for the full 4 weeks just to be safe, especially since we're deeper into tax season now and things might be busier for them.

Did you have to verify by uploading documents or just answering questions? I had to upload my driver's license and a utility bill last week, and I'm still waiting. Really need this money for some car repairs coming up. Anyone know if the document upload method takes longer than just answering the verification questions?

I was in the same boat last month but for my federal return. Michigan was processing fine but I couldn't get through to the IRS about my federal verification. After 3 days of calling and getting nowhere, I used Claimyr.com to connect with an IRS agent in about 15 minutes. Completely worth it. Not sure if they can help with Michigan Treasury specifically, but if you need to reach someone about your federal return while waiting for Michigan, it's a game changer compared to the usual 2+ hour wait times. My federal came through 5 days after speaking with an agent, and Michigan came about a week later.

Does this Claimyr service actually work? I've tried calling Michigan Treasury numerous times and can't get through. Would this help with state tax departments or just the IRS?

I verified on March 7th and still nothing. Did you have to provide any specific information when you called through this service? I'm getting desperate as I was counting on this money for April 1st rent.

Thanks for mentioning this. I had no idea such a service existed. Spent 3 hours on hold with Michigan Treasury last week before giving up. Might give this a try if I don't see movement by next Monday.

I've been through this process for several years now. In my experience, the timing varies significantly depending on when in the tax season you file. Early filers (January/early February) typically see quicker turnaround after verification - about 10-14 days. Mid-season filers (late February/March) often wait 3-4 weeks. Last year, I had a client who verified in April and waited nearly 6 weeks for their Michigan refund. The state doesn't always follow their own published timelines, especially as they get backlogged later in the season.

Just FYI - MI Treasury has diff processing times based on whether u verified online or by mail. Online verification = ~2-3 wks. Mail verification = 4-6 wks min. Also matters if u had credits like EITC or property tax credit. Those take longer to process even after verification. Check ur status at michigan.gov/mytaxes for most accurate info.
