Liberty Tax Return Status - Where to Check Approval/Denial?
Does anyone know how long it typically takes to get approval/denial status when filing through Liberty Tax? I'm used to getting updates within 2-3 days with my previous accountant, but it's been nearly a week with Liberty and I'm starting to get anxious. I've checked the IRS Where's My Refund tool but nothing shows up yet. My return is fairly complex this year with investment income and a rental property, so I'm wondering if that's causing delays compared to simpler returns. Any suggestions on where I can check my status?

Liberty Tax, like other tax preparation services, submits your return to the IRS electronically. Once submitted, you can check your e-file status through Liberty's client portal (if they provide one) for initial acceptance/rejection by the IRS. After IRS acceptance, track your refund through the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool (https://www.irs.gov/refunds) or the IRS2Go mobile app. Initial acceptance/rejection typically occurs within 24-48 hours, while full processing takes 21 days for most returns. Your Liberty Tax preparer should have provided tracking information specific to your filing.

This is pretty much right, but I've noticed Liberty Tax can be slower than others in updating their client portal. When I used H&R Block last year, I got notifications within hours. With Liberty two years ago, it took them 3-4 days just to tell me the IRS had accepted my return, even though when I called the IRS directly they confirmed they'd received it much earlier. Their systems just don't seem as integrated as some competitors.

I'm freaking out because I need this refund ASAP for a down payment! Does anyone know if calling Liberty directly helps speed things up? Or do they just tell you to wait like everyone else? 😫

I was in exactly the same situation 27 days ago with Liberty. Their portal showed nothing but when I checked my transcript using https://taxr.ai it showed my return was actually accepted 6 days earlier! The tool explained all the processing codes on my transcript and gave me a precise timeline. It was showing "processing" on WMR but taxr.ai correctly predicted my deposit date based on the cycle code. Liberty finally updated their portal 4 days later. Has anyone else checked their transcript directly? It's much more informative than WMR or the Liberty portal.

Liberty's client portal is absolutely terrible for status updates. Last year I waited 9 days with zero updates, then tried calling their customer service line only to be on hold for 47 minutes before being disconnected. I finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to connect with an actual IRS agent who confirmed my return was accepted days earlier and already processing. The agent even told me about a minor issue that was causing a slight delay. Liberty never would have caught that. Claimyr saved me from weeks of anxiety wondering what was happening.

I appreciate you sharing this experience, but I wonder if calling the IRS is really necessary at this stage. Doesn't the IRS generally say to wait 21 days before contacting them about refund status? I remember back in 2019 when I was worried about my refund, I called too early and they basically told me to be patient and check WMR.

The 21-day guideline is generally correct, but there are exceptions. On March 12th, I called after only 14 days because my transcript showed code 570, which indicates a hold. The IRS agent identified a mismatch in reported income that I was able to resolve immediately. Had I waited the full 21 days, my refund would have been delayed by weeks. Sometimes early intervention prevents longer delays, especially when there's an identifiable issue.

Have you tried checking your IRS account directly? Create an account at IRS.gov/account and you can view your transcript which will show if your return has been received and processed. This bypasses Liberty completely. If you see a 2024 return transcript, that means your return has been processed. If you only see W-2 and 1099 transcripts but no return transcript, the IRS is still working on it. What's your filing date? Did you receive an email confirmation when Liberty submitted your return? Did they provide an acknowledgment code?

Liberty Tax's tracking system is a joke compared to TurboTax or H&R Block. I've used all three and Liberty consistently has the worst client portal and status updates. They'll take your money quick enough but their technology seems stuck in 2010! 😂 Honestly, the fact that you're asking this question here instead of getting clear guidance from them after paying for their service is exactly why I stopped using them. You're probably fine, but their communication is terrible.

Liberty Tax gets the job done. Their online system isn't fancy but their in-person preparers are usually knowledgeable. The IRS processing timeline is the same regardless of which service you use. Liberty doesn't cause delays at the IRS end. The only difference is how quickly and clearly they communicate status updates to you. Call your local office directly instead of using the portal - they can often provide more information than what's online.

This is such a relief to hear! I was worried I'd made a mistake going with Liberty to save money compared to my usual accountant. I'll call my local office tomorrow. Their rate was $120 less than I paid last year, so I guess the trade-off is less sophisticated tracking. As long as my return is processed correctly, I can live with that.

Wait, so the Liberty Tax portal isn't directly connected to the IRS system? It's like ordering pizza online but the restaurant doesn't actually update the tracker - you have to call them to find out if your pizza is in the oven or already out for delivery. Is that right? I'm confused about why we pay for tax preparation if we still need to do all the tracking work ourselves through the IRS tools.

I experienced this exact issue with Liberty last year and the year before. Their system typically takes 3-5 business days to reflect IRS acceptance, even though the IRS usually accepts/rejects within 24-48 hours. In 2022, my return was actually processed and my refund was pending direct deposit before Liberty's portal even updated to show IRS acceptance! Your best bet is to use the IRS tools directly - they're more accurate and timely than Liberty's portal.
