What's the longest anyone's had to wait for their 1040 tax refund to be approved? I'm getting nervous...

Filed my federal and state taxes about two weeks ago through TurboTax. The returns were accepted right away (did my federal 1040 plus NY and PA state returns since I worked in both last year). The IRS website shows they received everything, but there's been zero movement on my refund status since then. When I check the "Where's My Refund" tool, it just says "Your tax return is still being processed." I was counting on getting that money sometime soon for some car repairs, but now I'm starting to get a bit worried. No letters from the IRS, no explanation for the delay. My return wasn't complicated - just W-2 income, standard deduction, nothing fancy. For those who've been through this before - what's the longest you've had to wait for a refund to be approved? Is two weeks of no movement normal this filing season? Not sure if I should be concerned yet or if I'm just being impatient.

The IRS website says most refunds are issued within 21 days of acceptance, but that's definitely not set in stone. I'm a tax preparer and have seen huge variations in processing times this year. Some of my clients got their refunds in a week, while others have been waiting 6+ weeks with no updates. The "still being processed" message usually means your return is in the normal queue but hasn't been reviewed yet. If it changes to "under review" or you get a letter, that's when you might need to take action. Generally, returns with refundable credits like EITC or Child Tax Credit take longer because the IRS scrutinizes those more carefully. Since you mentioned just having W-2 income and taking the standard deduction, it's probably just normal processing time. I'd give it at least 21 days from acceptance before worrying too much. The "Where's My Refund" tool typically only shows three statuses: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent. There's nothing in between "received" and "approved," even if progress is happening behind the scenes.

This makes me feel better too. Is there any difference in processing time between paper filing vs e-filing? And does filing early in the season vs. waiting until April make any difference in how fast they process returns?

0 coins

E-filing is definitely faster than paper filing - paper returns are taking anywhere from 6-12 weeks to process currently. The IRS is still working through a backlog of paper returns from previous years. Filing earlier in the season usually means faster processing times. The IRS gets swamped as the deadline approaches, so returns filed in January/February typically process more quickly than those filed in April. That said, this year we're seeing more random variation in processing times regardless of when people filed.

After struggling with refund delays for years, I finally discovered taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it's been a game-changer for tracking my refund status. Last year I was stuck in limbo for almost 8 weeks with the same "still processing" message you're seeing. Their system analyzed my tax transcript and pinpointed exactly why my refund was delayed - turned out there was a simple mismatch between reported income that I never would have caught. This year I used them again as soon as I got that dreaded "still processing" message. They pulled my transcript data, decoded all the cryptic IRS codes, and showed me that my return was actually in the final verification stage. Got my refund 4 days later! Definitely worth checking out if you're starting to get anxious about the delay.

How does it actually work? Do you have to give them your SSN and all your personal info? Seems kinda sketchy to hand over all that data to some website.

Can it tell if you're going to be audited? My aunt's refund was delayed last year and then boom, audit letter. I filed in February and still waiting on my refund so getting nervous.

It works by securely connecting to your IRS transcript through the same system tax professionals use. You do need to verify your identity, but they use bank-level encryption and don't store your sensitive info. They just decode the status codes in your transcript that the IRS doesn't explain to regular people. It can definitely show audit risk indicators! The transcript has specific codes that appear before an official audit notice goes out. My friend found out her return was flagged for review because of a missing 1099 she never received. She was able to proactively submit an amended return before getting an actual audit letter and avoided penalties.

Just wanted to update everyone - I tried that taxr.ai site from the earlier comment and it actually worked! I was skeptical at first (hence my question about audits), but I signed up and it showed me that my return was stuck in the "wage verification" department. Apparently one of my W-2s had a typo in the employer ID number which was causing the hold-up. The site pointed me to exactly which form to submit to fix the issue. I sent it in last Monday, and my refund was approved yesterday! Without knowing the specific problem, I would have been waiting around for who knows how long. Definitely recommend checking it out if your refund seems stuck - helped me identify and fix the exact issue.

If you're tired of checking the "Where's My Refund" tool every day and getting nowhere, I'd recommend Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I used them after waiting 5 weeks with no updates on my refund. They got me through to an actual IRS agent in about 20 minutes, instead of the usual 2+ hour wait or getting disconnected. I was super skeptical it would work, but they have this verification system that gets you prioritized in the IRS phone queue. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. The agent I spoke with found that my return was sitting in a queue waiting for manual review due to a simple verification issue. She processed it while I was on the phone, and my refund was approved 2 days later. So much better than just waiting blindly with no information! Especially if you need that money soon for something important like car repairs.

How does this even work? I thought the IRS phone system was the same for everyone. Is this like paying to cut in line at an amusement park??

Sounds like a scam. No way some random company can magically get you through to the IRS faster than everyone else. I'll just keep calling myself and save whatever they're charging.

It works by using a system that was originally designed for tax professionals to contact the IRS on behalf of clients. They've basically found a way to make this system available to regular taxpayers. It's completely legitimate - not cutting in line, but using a different line that most people don't have access to. I was super skeptical too before trying it! I spent three days calling the IRS myself, getting disconnected or waiting on hold for hours. With Claimyr, I was talking to an actual IRS agent in 20 minutes. They only charge if they actually connect you, and the info I got from that one call saved me weeks of waiting and wondering what was happening with my refund.

Ok I need to eat my words from my previous comment. After trying to call the IRS myself for THREE DAYS and either getting a "we're too busy, call back later" message or being on hold for over an hour before getting disconnected, I broke down and tried Claimyr. Got connected to an actual IRS agent in 15 minutes. FIFTEEN MINUTES! The agent was able to see that my return had been flagged because I had moved since filing last year, and they were able to verify my address change right there on the call. My refund was approved literally the next day. I don't know how they do it, but it actually works. Saved me weeks of stressing and checking the refund status tool fifty times a day. Sometimes it's worth admitting when you're wrong, and I was definitely wrong about this one!

Last year I waited 11 MONTHS for my refund! Filed in February, didn't get my money until January of the next year. No explanation, no letter, nothing. Called multiple times and just got the standard "it's still processing" response. Then one day it randomly showed up in my account. The IRS is seriously understaffed and their computer systems are ancient. So many returns get flagged for "manual review" for the tiniest discrepancies. My issue ended up being that I had moved and they couldn't verify my address. Try not to count on tax refund money for anything urgent. The government moves at its own pace.

11 MONTHS??! That's insane! Did you at least get interest on your refund after waiting that long? I thought they were required to pay interest if they take too long.

Yes, I did get interest! It wasn't much - around $120 on a $3,800 refund. The IRS starts adding interest after 45 days from when you filed or the April deadline, whichever is later. The interest rate changes quarterly and is currently 7% annual rate. It's taxable though, so you have to report it as income the following year. Small consolation for waiting nearly a year, but better than nothing I guess.

Am I the only one who always owes taxes instead of getting a refund? lol. I'd rather adjust my withholding to get more money throughout the year than give the government an interest-free loan. If you're consistently getting large refunds, you might want to adjust your W-4 to have less withheld from each paycheck.

I do the same! Better to have that money in my pocket throughout the year. But some people like getting that lump sum as forced savings. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I normally don't get big refunds either! This year was unusual because I had a period of unemployment followed by a higher-paying job, so my withholding was messed up. I'm definitely planning to adjust my W-4 after this. You're totally right about the interest-free loan thing. But for now, I'm still anxiously waiting for this refund to come through since I've already mentally allocated it for those car repairs. Lesson learned though!

Has anyone noticed the "Where's My Refund" tool being completely useless this year? Mine still says "processing" even though I already received my refund two weeks ago! And my sister's says "approved" but she hasn't gotten anything in her account. Their systems seem completely out of sync.

0 coins

Same here! The "Where's My Refund" page said processing for 3 weeks, then I randomly got a direct deposit with no update to the tool. Then two days AFTER I got my money, it finally updated to "sent." Their tracking system is completely broken.

Two weeks is still within the normal processing window, so try not to worry too much yet! I've been through this exact situation multiple times over the years. The IRS typically processes most refunds within 21 days of acceptance, but that's more of a goal than a guarantee, especially during busy filing season. I filed mine about 3 weeks ago and just got my refund deposited yesterday, so there's definitely hope! The "still being processed" message is frustrating because it doesn't give you any real information, but it usually just means your return is working its way through their system normally. Since you mentioned your return was straightforward (W-2 income, standard deduction), there's probably nothing wrong - it's likely just normal processing time. The IRS has been dealing with staffing issues and system upgrades that have caused some delays this year. If you don't see any movement by the end of this week (hitting that 21-day mark), then it might be worth calling the IRS directly. But for now, I'd say you're still in the normal waiting period. Hang in there!

Thanks for the reassurance! It's good to hear from someone who just went through this recently. I keep telling myself it's probably normal, but when you're counting on that money for something specific like car repairs, every day feels like forever. I think I'll give it until the end of the week like you suggested before I start panicking. The 21-day timeline is helpful to know - I wasn't sure if that was from when I filed or when it was accepted, so knowing it's from acceptance gives me a better sense of where I stand. Did you get any advance notice when yours was about to be deposited, or did it just show up in your account randomly?

It just showed up randomly! I was checking my bank account for something else and there it was. The "Where's My Refund" tool didn't update until like 2 days after I actually received the money, which seems to be a common issue this year based on other comments here. I totally get the anxiety when you're counting on that money for something specific. Car repairs can't wait, unlike some other expenses. Maybe see if your mechanic can work with you on timing if it comes down to it? Some shops are understanding about payment delays, especially if you explain the IRS situation. @3c1ecb24a1c5 Fingers crossed yours comes through soon! The fact that it was accepted right away and you have a simple return are both good signs.

I'm in a very similar boat - filed about 10 days ago and have been stuck on "still being processed" ever since. Reading through all these responses is actually really helpful and reassuring! It sounds like the general consensus is that 21 days from acceptance is the benchmark to watch for, and even then delays aren't necessarily a red flag. The stories about people getting their refunds randomly without the tracking tool updating are particularly interesting - makes me think I should be checking my bank account more often than relying on the IRS website. @3889e6ce151f I hope your refund comes through soon! The car repair situation adds extra stress to an already frustrating wait. At least knowing it's a common experience this year helps put things in perspective.

Thanks for sharing your experience! It's definitely reassuring to know I'm not alone in this waiting game. You're right about checking the bank account more frequently - it sounds like the IRS tracking system is pretty unreliable this year based on all these stories. I think the 21-day benchmark is a good rule of thumb to keep in mind. It helps set realistic expectations instead of expecting the refund after just a few days. The randomness of when refunds actually show up (versus when the system updates) is pretty frustrating from a planning perspective, but at least now I know that's normal. @3889e6ce151f Hope you get some good news soon on your refund! The car repair timing pressure definitely makes the wait more stressful.

I'm dealing with the exact same anxiety! Filed my 1040 about 10 days ago and have been stuck on "still being processed" with zero movement. Like you, I have a pretty straightforward return - just W-2 income, standard deduction, nothing complicated. Reading through everyone's experiences here is actually really comforting. It sounds like the 21-day processing window is more realistic than the "within days" expectation I had in my head. The stories about people's refunds showing up randomly in their bank accounts before the IRS website even updates are eye-opening - I've been religiously checking "Where's My Refund" but maybe I should be monitoring my bank account instead. The waiting is definitely harder when you have specific plans for that money. I'm in a similar situation where I was counting on my refund for some home repairs that can't wait much longer. But it sounds like most people do eventually get their money, even if the timing is unpredictable. Hang in there - based on all these responses, two weeks of no movement seems totally normal for this filing season!

I'm glad this thread is helping ease some anxiety for everyone waiting! It's so much better to know that what we're experiencing is normal rather than sitting alone wondering if something went wrong with our returns. The tip about checking bank accounts instead of relying on the IRS tracking tool seems to be the real takeaway here. It sounds like their "Where's My Refund" system is pretty unreliable this year, with multiple people reporting that their money showed up days before the website even updated. @67554d9ce462 I totally feel you on the home repairs situation - there's definitely added stress when you have concrete plans for that refund money and contractors waiting. At least now we know that the 21-day window is more realistic than hoping for it in the first week or two. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and timelines. It really helps to hear from people who've been through this exact same waiting game recently!

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed my 1040 about 12 days ago through H&R Block online, got the acceptance confirmation immediately, but have been stuck on "still being processed" ever since. My return is super straightforward too - just one W-2, standard deduction, no dependents or credits. Reading all these responses is honestly such a relief. I was starting to think something was wrong with my return, but it sounds like this is just the reality of tax season 2024. The 21-day timeline from acceptance seems to be the real benchmark to watch, not the "7-10 days" I was hoping for in my head. What's really helpful is learning that the "Where's My Refund" tool is basically useless this year. I've been checking it obsessively every morning, but based on everyone's experiences here, I should probably just be monitoring my bank account instead since refunds seem to show up randomly without any warning or status updates. @3889e6ce151f I hope your refund comes through soon, especially with the car repair situation adding pressure. At least we're all in this waiting game together and it's clearly a widespread issue rather than something specific to our individual returns!
