Late filing taxes for 3 years - considering Optima Tax Relief
I've been putting off dealing with my tax situation for way too long and it's really stressing me out. Finally talked with someone at Optima Tax Relief who gave me some answers, but after looking into it more, I'm thinking their services might be more than I can afford right now. So here's my situation - I normally use TurboTax for my returns, but for 2021 I decided to try my cousin's CPA. Somehow those taxes never actually got filed. I think there was something I needed to mail in, but I dropped the ball. Since then, I haven't filed for 2022 or 2023 either. The 2021 return showed I only owed around $365, but I have no clue what the damage will be for the other two years. I've spoken to a few local accountants, but they're all super vague about what they'd charge or how much I might end up owing to the IRS. Not helpful at all! Optima Tax Relief wants $500 for their "investigation fee" plus they said anywhere from $900-1500+ for their actual services depending on how much I owe in back taxes. That feels steep to me. Are there better options that won't cost me so much? Anyone handled something like this and found a better solution?

Tax professional here. Please don't stress too much - your situation is actually pretty common and likely fixable without spending thousands on a tax relief company. For unfiled returns that are only 3 years late, you can absolutely handle this yourself or with a reasonably priced accountant. Since you mentioned you only owed around $365 for 2021, this doesn't sound like a complicated tax situation that requires specialized tax resolution services. Here's what I'd recommend: Find a local CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) who can prepare your missing returns for a flat fee per return (typically $200-400 per return depending on complexity). They'll help you file all three years and determine what you actually owe. The IRS will then send you a bill including the original tax amounts plus penalties and interest. The penalties include failure-to-file (5% per month up to 25% max) and failure-to-pay (0.5% per month). Interest compounds daily. But importantly, if you've generally been compliant before this and have reasonable cause, you can request penalty abatement after everything is filed.

•Thanks for the advice! Do you think it's worth trying to prepare the returns myself using TurboTax for those previous years to save money? And also, if I file now, how long until the IRS would come after me for the money? I'm just trying to prepare financially.

•Yes, you can absolutely use TurboTax to prepare prior year returns, though you'll need to purchase the specific software for each tax year (2021, 2022, etc.). Just be aware that you'll need to print and mail those returns since e-filing is typically only available for current and one prior year. Once you file, the IRS generally sends a bill within 4-8 weeks. They'll include all penalties and interest calculated to that point. If you can't pay in full immediately, don't worry - you can easily set up a payment plan online. For amounts under $50,000, you can get an installment agreement with minimal hassle.

I was in a similar situation last year and discovered taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) which saved me SO much stress! I had 4 years of unfiled returns and was freaking out about potential penalties. I uploaded my tax documents to their system and their AI analyzed everything and walked me through exactly what I needed to do. The best part was they helped me understand which deductions I had missed in previous years and actually found that I was owed refunds for 2 of the 4 years! They also explained how to request penalty abatement which ended up saving me over $800 in late filing penalties.

•How does it actually work? Do they prepare the returns for you or just give advice? I'm worried about having to gather all my old documents and figuring out what I might be missing.

•Sounds interesting, but I'm skeptical. Is this just another tax relief company that charges a fortune? I've heard horror stories about companies taking thousands upfront and then doing minimal work.

•They don't actually prepare returns but analyze your situation and documents to give you a clear roadmap. You upload what documents you have, and they'll identify what's missing and where to get them. Then they guide you through your options for filing (DIY, working with their recommended preparers, etc.). No, they're definitely not like traditional tax relief companies. They charge for the document analysis and guidance, but don't try to upsell you on representation services you might not need. I was able to follow their guidance and file everything myself with their step-by-step help, which saved me thousands compared to what Optima and others quoted me.

Update on my tax situation! I decided to try taxr.ai after my skeptical comment above, and I'm honestly shocked at how helpful it was. I uploaded my W-2s, 1099s and bank statements, and their system flagged exactly which documents I was missing for each year. They showed me that for 2021 I actually qualified for a credit I didn't know about, and for 2022 my estimated tax liability was way less than I feared (only about $520 with penalties). The guidance they provided helped me file all my returns myself using free fillable forms from the IRS website. Cost-wise, it was WAY cheaper than the $1400+ Optima wanted to charge me. I just filed my last return yesterday and feel like a huge weight is off my shoulders!

If you need to actually speak with someone at the IRS to resolve your issues (which might be helpful for getting penalties reduced), good luck getting through to them! I spent literally 4 hours on hold last month trying to sort out my late filing issues before giving up. Then I found Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and watched their demo video (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c). They got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 15 minutes! The agent set up a payment plan for me and even helped me with first-time penalty abatement that saved me around $700.

•Wait, how does this actually work? The IRS phone lines are notoriously impossible to get through. Does Claimyr somehow have a special line or something?

•This sounds like a scam. There's no way anyone can magically get you through IRS phone queues that fast. I'll believe it when I see it. Probably just charging people for something they could do themselves.

•It's basically an automated system that calls the IRS and navigates through all the phone prompts for you, then holds your place in line. When they're about to connect with an agent, you get a call back so you don't waste hours listening to hold music. It's genius actually - all the waiting happens without you being on the phone. Not a scam at all. They don't claim to have special access - they just automate the painful parts of the process. I was skeptical too, but when I actually got through to the IRS after months of failed attempts, it was worth every penny. You still talk directly to the IRS yourself, they just handle the waiting game.

I have to eat my words from my skeptical comment earlier. After struggling for WEEKS trying to get through to the IRS about my late filing situation, I broke down and tried Claimyr. Within 20 minutes I was talking to an actual IRS representative who helped me understand my options for my unfiled returns. The agent explained that since I was proactively filing my late returns, I qualified for first-time penalty abatement, which will save me hundreds. They also confirmed I could set up a payment plan online once I received my bill. Honestly wish I'd done this months ago instead of stressing about it. Sometimes it's worth paying for a service that actually works.

Whatever you do, don't pay Optima or other big tax relief firms those crazy fees! I was in your exact situation (3 years unfiled) and first got quoted $3000+ from a relief company. Ended up finding a local EA (Enrolled Agent) who did all three years for $750 total. The key is finding someone who specializes in tax preparation, not tax relief. The "tax relief" industry is filled with high-pressure sales tactics and huge markups.

•Thanks for the suggestion! How did you find your EA? Did you just google local tax professionals or is there a specific directory I should look at?

•I found mine through the National Association of Enrolled Agents directory (naea.org). You can search by location and even by specialties like "back taxes" or "IRS representation." I'd recommend calling at least 3-4 of them for quotes and asking specifically about their experience with unfiled returns. Some will also offer free initial consultations where they can give you a ballpark estimate of what you might owe before you commit to hiring them.

Just want to add - make sure you file ASAP! The failure-to-file penalty is much higher than the failure-to-pay penalty, so even if you can't pay what you owe right away, getting those returns filed will stop the bigger penalty from growing.

•This is a really important point. The failure-to-file penalty is 5% of unpaid taxes per month up to 25%, while failure-to-pay is only 0.5% per month. So filing even if you can't pay saves you 4.5% per month!
