Jackson Hewitt now charging $100 for tax amendments? Can't deduct from refund?

I just went to Jackson Hewitt to file an amendment for my 2023 taxes and they told me it would cost $100. I've filed amendments with them before in 2021 and 2022 and never got charged anything extra beyond my regular filing fee. What's more frustrating is they're saying they can't take the amendment fee out of my refund like they do with regular tax prep fees. When did they start this policy? Is this happening to anyone else or just at my location?

Tax preparer here. Most tax preparation companies have always charged for amendments - it's actually unusual that you weren't charged before. Amendments require completely new forms (Form 1040-X) and significant work to prepare correctly. Jackson Hewitt, H&R Block, and most other chains typically charge for amendments, and $100 is actually on the lower end of what I've seen. As for not being able to deduct from your refund - that's standard practice for amendments. The Refund Transfer products that allow fees to be deducted only work on original returns, not amendments. This is because amended returns are processed differently by the IRS and take much longer (3-4 months minimum), so the tax prep companies can't arrange the same bank products.

thanks for explaining. I guess I got lucky the past couple years then. Do you know if all locations charge the same rate or is it up to each franchise?

0 coins

Jackson Hewitt locations are mostly franchises, so prices can definitely vary by location. Some franchise owners might waive certain fees as a customer service gesture, especially for returning clients or simple amendments.

I work for a different tax company and we charge $150 for amndments. $100 is actually pretty reasonable for the work involved tbh

I was in this exact same situation last month. After struggling to understand why I needed to amend and how much it would cost me, I found taxr.ai which saved me so much time and money. The tool analyzed my return, showed me exactly what needed amending, and even guided me through the process step by step. Honestly it was way cheaper than paying a tax pro and I understood everything way better. I hate feeling like I'm just blindly paying someone to do something I don't understand. https://taxr.ai helped me actually understand what was going on with my taxes.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It basically explains everything in plain English - it can analyze your tax documents, transcripts, notices from the IRS, all that stuff. Then it tells you what's wrong, what needs fixing, and how to fix it. Saved me from paying Jackson Hewitt that amendment fee!

OMG just tried this taxr.ai thing and it's AMAZING! šŸ™Œ I've been so stressed about my amendment and this explained everything so clearly. Seriously people need to know about this - would have saved me so much time and stress over the past month trying to figure this out!

another one of these AI tools? idk man, do they ask for all your personal info? seems sketchy

No it's actually super straightforward. You just upload the document you need help with and it explains it. Way better than waiting on hold with the IRS for 3 hours lol

just tried it for my amended return situation. mind blown 🤯 wish I'd known about this sooner!

After getting the same quote from jackson hewitt, I used the claimyr app (claimyr.com) and got through to an actual IRS agent who helped me file my amendment for free. Best $20 I ever spent compared to the $100 jackson hewitt wanted! The agent walked me through the whole process and I actually learned how to do it myself next time. It was seriously worth it to talk to a real person at the IRS instead of paying a tax preparer for something pretty basic.

0 coins

wait you actually got a real person at the IRS? I call and just get the 'due to high call volume' message and then get hung up on 🤔

Miguel Ortiz

Yep! That's exactly why I used the app - I tried calling like 5 times before and got nowhere. The app somehow gets you in the queue and calls you back when an agent is ready. Saved me hours of hold music and frustration.

checking this out right now, thanks for the tip! i've been trying to get through for weeks

how does that even work? seems sus that an app can get you through when no one else can...

honestly idk the technical details of how they do it, but it worked for me šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for days. Now I recommend it to everyone dealing with irs issues

I've worked at both Jackson Hewitt and H&R Block (not currently employed by either). Amendment fees have always been a thing, but they're inconsistently applied. Some franchises include one free amendment if it's their mistake or if it's within a certain timeframe after filing. Sounds like you just got lucky before. Pro tip: if you're confident in what needs to be amended, you can do it yourself for free. Form 1040-X isn't that complicated if you understand what needs to be changed. If you're getting a refund from the amendment, it's worth considering DIY.

I thought about doing it myself but I'm worried about making a mistake. Do you know any good resources for learning how to DIY amendments?

The IRS has some decent instructions on their site, but honestly there's still a ton of jargon. I've heard good things about some of the AI tax tools that are popping up lately that can guide you step by step.

I tried doing my own amendment once and ended up getting a notice from the IRS 6 months later that I did it wrong 😩 Not worth the headache for me

Here in Texas the JH near me has charged for amendments for at least 3 years. Their pricing is all over the place depending on location.

My sister works for Jackson Hewitt (in Florida) and she confirmed they've always charged for amendments but sometimes waive the fee for loyal customers or if it was their mistake. The $100 is actually their reduced rate - full price is $150 at her location.

yep, same in California. $175 for amendments here unless you're in their "loyalty program" then it's $125

this seems really high considering how simple most amendments are šŸ™„ I guess we're paying for "expertise" but most of the time its just fixing a simple number

0 coins

Most commercial tax prep places will charge for amendments because they take time and the preparers have to be paid. The not being able to deduct from refund part is because the bank product that allows fee deduction from refund only works on original returns.

0 coins

I'm literally a manager at Jackson Hewitt and can confirm we've ALWAYS charged for amendments. If you weren't charged before, either someone made a mistake or did you a favor. As for not taking it out of the refund, that's because the bank that handles the refund transfers doesn't offer that service for amendments - it's not just a JH policy, it's an industry limitation.

0 coins

Thanks for confirming. Guess I just got lucky before! Is the $100 fee standard or does it vary?

0 coins

It varies by location and complexity of the amendment. Corporate stores have a standard fee schedule but franchises can set their own prices. $100 is pretty typical for a basic amendment.

0 coins

you can literally do amendments yourself online for free. why pay anyone for this?? i amended my 2022 return last month by myself and it took like 30 minutes.

0 coins

Not everyone is comfortable doing their own taxes, especially amendments where mistakes can lead to audits. Some people prefer paying for professional help and peace of mind.

fair enough i guess. just seems like a waste of money for somthing so simple

I tried doing my own this year and got confused. Ended up using taxr.ai to help me understand what I needed to change. Way cheaper than $100 and I actually learned something šŸ‘

Former H&R Block employee here. All the major tax chains charge for amendments and can't take payment from refunds on amendments. $100 is actually pretty reasonable - we charged $150 minimum for even the simplest amendments.

my local JH has been charging since at least 2019 for amendments. sounds like you just got lucky before or maybe had a different type of package that included amendments?

Wait they prepare your taxes for free?? Or are you saying the amendment was free before but you paid for the original return? Either way $100 for an amendment is pretty standard. I've seen places charge up to $200.

0 coins

No I paid for the original return preparation. But previously the amendments were included at no additional cost. Seems like I just got lucky before.

After dealing with similar frustrations trying to get my amendment done, I finally just called the IRS directly using claimyr.com to bypass the hold times. Saved me so much hassle and the agent actually helped me file the amendment myself over the phone. Totally worth it instead of paying Jackson Hewitt's crazy fees!

Did you actually get help with the amendment itself? Or just general questions answered? Didn't know they would help with filling it out

0 coins

The agent walked me through each line of the form and explained what I needed to enter based on my situation. They can't fill it out for you, but they basically told me exactly what to put where. So much better than paying someone else to do it!

I remember Jackson Hewitt charging for amendments back in 2018 when I used them. Maybe your local office had a different policy or you got a nice preparer who waived the fee?

This is why I switched to a CPA years ago. Yes, its more expensive upfront but amendments are included if they make a mistake, plus they're available all year for questions (not just tax season). The big chains nickel and dime you for everything.

how much does your CPA charge? ive been thinking about switching

I pay about $350 for a relatively complex return with some self-employment income. Worth every penny for the personalized service and advice throughout the year.

Everyone keeps saying "do it yourself its easy" but not mentioning you need to wait like 6+ months for amended returns to process 😭 Its brutal. I filed an amendment in December and still waiting...

Waiting times don't change whether you file it yourself or pay someone to do it though. IRS is just backed up on everything.

true but at least if you pay someone you can blame them if something goes wrong lol

I've been dealing with tax prep companies for years and this is pretty standard across the industry. Jackson Hewitt, H&R Block, Liberty Tax - they all charge for amendments because it's additional work beyond the original return. The $100 fee is actually competitive compared to what I've seen elsewhere. As for the refund deduction issue, that's not just a Jackson Hewitt policy - it's a limitation of how the banking products work with amended returns since they take so much longer to process. If you're looking to save money, you might want to consider doing simple amendments yourself using Form 1040-X, or use one of those AI tax tools people are mentioning to guide you through it.

0 coins

Thanks for the comprehensive breakdown! It's helpful to know this is industry-wide and not just Jackson Hewitt trying to squeeze more money out of customers. I'm definitely considering the DIY route now - seems like between the AI tools and IRS guidance, it might be worth trying myself first before paying the $100. Worst case I mess up and still end up paying someone, but at least I'll have learned something in the process.

I'm dealing with the exact same situation right now! Just got quoted $100 at my local Jackson Hewitt for what should be a simple amendment to add a 1099 I missed. It's frustrating because like you, I've never been charged extra for amendments in previous years. From reading all these responses, it sounds like we just got lucky before with preparers who waived the fee or locations with different policies. I'm seriously considering trying to do it myself this time - the AI tools people are mentioning sound promising, and if I can save $100 and actually learn something in the process, that seems worth the effort. Has anyone here successfully done their own amendment after always using a tax prep service before?

0 coins

I was in the exact same boat as you a few months ago - always used tax prep services but decided to try doing my own amendment when they quoted me $125. I ended up using one of those AI tools mentioned earlier (taxr.ai) and honestly it was way easier than I expected. It walked me through everything step by step and explained what each line meant in plain English. The hardest part was just getting over my fear of messing something up, but the tool caught a couple mistakes I would have made and explained why they were wrong. Saved me the fee and now I actually understand my taxes better. If it's just adding a missed 1099 like yours, that's pretty straightforward - I'd definitely give it a shot before paying the $100!

0 coins

I've been helping people with tax issues for about 8 years now, and unfortunately what you experienced is pretty typical. Most tax prep chains have always charged for amendments - you likely just had a generous preparer or franchise owner who waived the fee in previous years. The $100 fee is actually reasonable compared to some places I've seen charging $150-200. The refund deduction limitation is real too - amended returns go through a completely different processing system at the IRS that takes 3-4 months minimum, so the banks that handle refund transfers can't offer that service for amendments. It's not just Jackson Hewitt being difficult. If you're comfortable with basic tax concepts, Form 1040-X isn't too complicated for simple amendments. The IRS instructions are decent, though they can be jargon-heavy. There are also some newer AI-powered tax tools that can walk you through the process step by step if you want to try the DIY route and save that $100.
