Why is FileYourTaxes.com charging for my Federal Return now? Used to be free!
I'm so confused and kinda upset tbh. I've used FileYourTaxes.com for the past few years and they've always let me file my federal return for FREE. I only had to pay for state filing which was fine with me. But I just logged in to start my 2024 taxes and now they're trying to charge me for both?? I definitely qualify for free filing (my income isn't that high lol) but it's still showing a fee at checkout. Did something change this year? Has anyone else run into this problem with FileYourTaxes.com? I really don't want to start over with another service since all my info is already there from previous years. Maybe I'm missing something obvious?

This happens every year with various tax filing services. There are a few things that might be happening here: First, make sure you're accessing FileYourTaxes.com through the IRS Free File portal (https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free). If you go directly to the company's website, you might not be accessing their truly free version. The tax prep companies often have two versions - a commercial one with fees and the actual Free File version they provide through the IRS partnership. Second, check if you still qualify for their specific Free File program. Each company has different income limits and eligibility requirements that can change year to year. For 2025 filing season, some companies lowered their income thresholds. Third, did you add any forms or schedules that might have triggered an upgrade? Even one form outside their free tier can bump you to a paid version.

•But I thought the new Direct File program from the IRS was supposed to fix all this confusion? Is that available everywhere now? I remember seeing something about it being expanded for this tax season.

•The IRS Direct File program has expanded for the 2025 filing season but it's still not available in all states. It's a good option if you have a simple tax situation and live in one of the participating states. The program handles basic W-2 income, standard deduction, and some tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit. However, it doesn't support all tax situations yet, so depending on your specific needs, you might still need to use a commercial tax prep service. If your return involves self-employment income, itemized deductions, or certain other tax situations, Direct File might not work for you at this point.

I had the same issue last year and discovered that these tax sites are really sneaky. I started using taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it literally saved me so much confusion. I uploaded my tax documents and it told me exactly which forms I needed and which free filing options I actually qualified for. Before I found it, I was going in circles between different tax sites and kept hitting surprise fees at the end. It's super frustrating when you spend an hour entering all your info just to get hit with unexpected charges! With taxr.ai, it analyzed my documents first and told me which service would actually be free for my situation before I wasted time on the wrong one.

•Does it actually file your taxes for you or just tell you where to file? Because if I have to re-enter everything anyway I'm not sure how helpful that would be.

•I'm a bit skeptical about using yet another service. How does it make money if it's helping you find free filing options? Are they selling your data or something?

•It doesn't file your taxes directly - it analyzes your documents first to tell you which service will actually be free for your specific situation, saving you from starting with the wrong service and wasting time. This way you only have to enter your information once at the right service. They don't sell your data - they're actually pretty transparent about their privacy policy. They make money by partnering with some of the tax services but they show you ALL your free options regardless of partnerships. They saved me from paying $89 that TurboTax tried to charge me when I qualified for completely free filing.

Ok so I tried taxr.ai after posting my skeptical comment above and I have to admit it was actually super helpful. I uploaded my W-2 and a 1099 I got from a side gig, and it immediately showed me that I qualified for free filing through FreeTaxUSA even though FileYourTaxes was going to charge me $44! The analysis explained that my 1099 income was triggering the fee at FileYourTaxes but FreeTaxUSA includes that in their free tier. Took me like 2 minutes to figure this out instead of the hours I spent last year trying different services and getting hit with surprise fees at the checkout page. Just wanted to follow up since I was wrong to be so skeptical!

If you're having trouble getting actual help from FileYourTaxes support, you might want to try Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was going CRAZY trying to reach a human at one of these tax services last year when they messed up my filing status. I was on hold for literally 2+ hours and kept getting disconnected. Someone recommended Claimyr and it was night and day difference. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c but basically they get you through to a real person at the IRS or these tax services without the insane wait times. I got my issue with incorrect charges resolved in like 20 minutes instead of spending days getting nowhere.

•Wait is this for real? How does that even work? I thought everyone had to suffer through those same hold times.

•Sounds too good to be true tbh. The IRS is infamous for their hold times. I've literally put my phone on speaker and done an entire workout while waiting. I can't imagine any service actually fixing that fundamental problem.

•It's totally legit - they use technology that navigates the phone trees and waits on hold for you. When they reach a real person, your phone rings and you're connected directly. It's not magic, just smart technology that does the waiting for you. They can't create more IRS agents, but they make it so you don't have to sit there listening to the hold music. I was super skeptical too but after waiting 3+ hours on my own with no success, I was desperate enough to try. Got connected to a real person at the IRS in about 40 minutes (while I was doing other things).

Ok I have to eat my words. After commenting yesterday I decided to try Claimyr to deal with this refund issue I've had pending for MONTHS. I figured it wouldn't work but whatever, I was desperate. I'm literally shocked. They got me through to someone at the IRS this morning after I'd been trying unsuccessfully for weeks. The agent I talked to was able to see that there was a typo in my direct deposit info which is why my refund was stuck in limbo. Problem fixed in one 15-minute call after MONTHS of frustration. Totally worth it just for the time saved not listening to that awful hold music. Never thought I'd be this excited about a phone call with the IRS lol.

Have you tried contacting their customer service? Sometimes they have promotions that don't get properly applied. Last year I had to chat with a rep who manually added a free filing code to my account because the system wasn't recognizing my eligibility.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I tried contacting their customer service through the chat function but waited 45 mins with no response. I ended up calling their number and it went to voicemail saying they're experiencing "higher than normal call volume" 🙄 I'm going to try again tomorrow morning when maybe they're less busy. I just don't want to start all over with another site since I've already entered everything. It's so frustrating when they advertise free filing but then try to charge you at the last minute!

•That's so frustrating! Try early morning like 8-9am Eastern time when they first open. That's when I've had the best luck getting through. Also, take screenshots of any "free filing" promotions they advertised to you, so you can reference them. One other thing - sometimes if you just leave your cart sitting there incomplete for a day or two, they'll email you a discount code to entice you to complete your filing. Might be worth trying if nothing else works!

Has anyone tried the new IRS Direct File program? I heard it's completely free regardless of income and doesn't have any of these hidden fee issues.

•I used it this year and it was pretty straightforward! But it only works if you have a simple return. If you have any investments, self-employment income, or need to itemize deductions, you can't use it. Also, it's still limited to certain states though they expanded the program this year.

•Thanks for the info! I'll look into whether my state is included. My taxes are pretty simple - just a W-2 and student loan interest, so maybe I'll qualify. Anything to avoid these surprise fees from the commercial sites!
