I'm totally lost with Free File Fillable Forms this year - what's changed?
I've been using Free File Fillable Forms for like the past 5-6 years now and it's always been my go-to. Love that it's basically just the paper forms but digital, which makes things straightforward for me. But this year I'm completely confused! Just created my new account (annoying that we have to do this every single year btw) and everything looks different. The interface has completely changed and I'm not even sure where to start. When I logged in, I expected to see the familiar setup but now there's this whole new layout and I can't figure out how to actually start my 2024 return. Did they completely overhaul the system? Is anyone else finding this super confusing? I don't wanna pay for tax software since my taxes are pretty simple, but this new version has me totally stumped. Any tips on navigating the new interface would be really appreciated!

I just went through this exact same confusion last week! The Free File Fillable Forms system definitely got a major overhaul for the 2025 filing season. Once you get used to it though, it actually works better than the old version. After you log in, you need to click on the "Start New Tax Return" button on your dashboard - it's not super obvious since they moved it to the right side. Then you'll need to verify your identity again (I know, annoying) before you can access the actual forms. The biggest change is that they now use a more wizard-like approach for the initial setup. Fill out the basic info first, then it will generate your Form 1040 with only the schedules you actually need. In the old system, you had to manually select each form. The actual form-filling experience is still similar once you get to that stage. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any specific questions about navigating particular sections.

•Is there any way to import last year's information? I seem to remember being able to do that before, but I can't find the option anywhere on this new interface.

•Unfortunately, there's no direct import feature this year. Because they completely rebuilt the system, they weren't able to carry over the import functionality. You'll need to start fresh and manually enter everything. The silver lining is that the new system has better error checking as you go. In previous years, errors would only show up at the end when you tried to submit. Now it flags potential issues as you're filling out each section, which saves a lot of frustration later.

After struggling with the new Free File Fillable Forms interface myself, I started using taxr.ai to help me navigate the system. I've always been someone who prefers the direct forms approach too, but this year's changes had me completely lost until I found this tool. What I like about https://taxr.ai is that it helps interpret the forms and instructions without taking over the process. You can upload your documents (W-2s, 1099s, etc.) and it explains which fields need to go where in the new Free File Fillable Forms interface. It's like having a translator between your tax documents and the new system. Still free filing, just with a helpful guide!

•How secure is it though? I'm always nervous about uploading my tax documents to some random website. Does it actually store your tax info or just help with the forms?

•I've heard about taxr.ai but wasn't sure if it would work with Free File Fillable Forms specifically. Does it actually show you where everything goes in the new interface or just give general guidance? The new layout is so different I can't even find where to enter my 1099-INT information.

•It doesn't permanently store your documents - they use the same level of encryption as most tax software and delete everything after you're done. You can also just upload one document at a time if you prefer, get the guidance, and then delete as you go. For the Free File Fillable Forms interface specifically, it actually gives you screenshots of the new system with arrows pointing to exactly where each piece of information needs to go. For your 1099-INT, once you're in the main form view, you need to add Schedule B from the "Add Forms" menu on the left, then it'll guide you through entering the interest income there. Super helpful when everything's been moved around!

Just wanted to update that I tried taxr.ai after my frustrated post above, and it was exactly what I needed! I was totally lost trying to figure out where to enter my various 1099 forms in the new Free File Fillable Forms interface. The screenshots with the little arrows pointing to exactly where I needed to click saved me hours of frustration. I still get to use the free filing system like I wanted, but without all the confusion of trying to learn the new layout. Honestly wish I'd found this before spending 3 hours clicking around aimlessly. If you're struggling with the new interface like I was, definitely worth checking out.

If you're getting stuck with specific questions while using Free File Fillable Forms, trying to call the IRS for help is practically impossible these days. After waiting on hold for 2+ hours multiple times with no luck, I finally tried https://claimyr.com which got me through to an actual IRS agent in about 15 minutes. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I had a specific question about reporting some crypto transactions on the new Free File Fillable Forms interface that wasn't covered in any of the help docs. The agent was able to walk me through exactly which forms I needed to add and where to enter the information. Saved me tons of time instead of trying to figure it out through trial and error.

•Wait, how does this actually work? I thought everybody had to wait in the same IRS phone queue. How could some service possibly get you through faster than everyone else?

•Sounds like a scam to me. The IRS phone system is what it is - nobody gets special treatment or gets to cut the line. I highly doubt this is legitimate.

•It uses a system that continuously redials and navigates the IRS phone tree for you. When it finally gets through to a human agent, it calls your phone and connects you. You're still going through the regular IRS phone system, but the service handles all the waiting and redialing instead of you having to do it manually. The reason it works is because most people give up after being on hold for 30+ minutes, but this system never gives up. It's basically just automating what you'd do manually if you had infinite patience and time. Nothing improper about it - you're still going through the official channels, just with technology handling the frustrating part.

I owe an apology to Profile 14. After calling the IRS unsuccessfully 3 times this week (got disconnected twice after 40+ minutes), I broke down and tried Claimyr out of desperation. Not gonna lie, I was SHOCKED when my phone rang 20 minutes later and it was actually an IRS agent on the line. I had a complicated question about reporting some teacher expenses on my return using Free File Fillable Forms, and the agent walked me through the exact steps in the new interface. Ended up saving me hours of frustration and probably doing it wrong. I'm still kinda surprised it actually worked, but consider me a convert. Sometimes it's worth admitting when you're wrong!

Has anyone figured out how to save your progress in the new Free File Fillable Forms? I got halfway through my return last night and when I came back today, it looked like everything was gone! Please tell me there's a way to recover my work...

•You have to manually save now! There's a "Save" button in the top right corner that you need to click periodically. The old version auto-saved but this one doesn't seem to. I learned this the hard way too after losing an hour of work. Also, important tip: you need to completely exit out of a form page using the "Done" button before switching to another form, or those changes might not be captured even if you hit save.

•Thanks so much! I found the save button where you mentioned. Unfortunately my previous work is definitely gone, but at least I know for next time. The "Done" button tip is super helpful too - that explains why some of my entries seemed to disappear even though I thought I was saving. This new interface is definitely not intuitive!

Anyone else notice that the math checking seems broken in certain parts of the new Free File Fillable Forms? I entered all my W-2 information correctly but the totals on my 1040 don't match what they should be. I've triple-checked my numbers and they're definitely right.

•I had this exact issue! The problem might be that you need to click the "Calculate" button manually after entering numbers. It's at the bottom of each page. For some reason it doesn't auto-calculate like last year's version did.

I'm going through the exact same frustration right now! Just spent 2 hours trying to figure out where everything moved to in the new Free File Fillable Forms interface. It's like they completely redesigned it from scratch without any consideration for people who've been using the old system for years. The most annoying part is having to create a new account every single year - why can't they just let us keep our login info? And now with this totally different layout, it feels like starting over from zero. I'm really hoping they'll improve the user experience because this is way more complicated than it needs to be for what should be straightforward tax filing. Thanks for posting about this - at least I know I'm not the only one completely lost with these changes!

•You're definitely not alone! I'm a first-time user of Free File Fillable Forms and even I can tell this new interface is confusing. I was expecting something straightforward based on what people said about previous years, but this feels unnecessarily complicated. What's really frustrating me is that there doesn't seem to be any clear tutorial or walkthrough for the new system. The help documentation still references features and layouts that don't exist anymore. I've been piecing together information from forum posts like this one just to figure out basic navigation. The annual account recreation is particularly annoying - especially when you're already dealing with learning a completely new interface. It's like they're actively trying to make the process more difficult each year!

I feel your pain! I've been using Free File Fillable Forms for about 4 years now and this year's changes caught me completely off guard too. What helped me get through it was breaking it down into smaller steps instead of trying to figure everything out at once. Here's what worked for me: First, ignore the new dashboard layout and just focus on finding that "Start New Tax Return" button (it's moved to the right side like someone mentioned). Once you're in the actual forms, the core experience is still similar to before - it's really just the navigation and setup that's different. One thing I discovered is that the new system actually does a better job of only showing you the forms you need based on your initial answers, which saves time once you get used to it. But yeah, the learning curve is definitely steeper this year and the lack of import functionality is really frustrating. Hang in there - once you get past the initial confusion, it's still the same free, straightforward tax filing we've been using. Just with a much more confusing wrapper around it unfortunately!

•This is really helpful, thank you! I was getting overwhelmed trying to understand everything at once. Breaking it down into smaller steps makes so much more sense. I found that "Start New Tax Return" button you mentioned and you're right - once I got past the confusing dashboard, the actual form-filling process does feel more familiar. The new system suggesting only the forms I need is actually pretty nice once you get used to it. Still wish they had kept some kind of import feature though. Having to re-enter everything from scratch when you've been using the same system for years feels like such a step backward. But at least now I have a better game plan for working through it. Thanks for the encouragement!

I'm dealing with this exact same frustration! Been using Free File Fillable Forms for several years and was completely blindsided by how different everything looks this year. The new interface is so confusing compared to the straightforward system we're used to. What's really bothering me is that they made all these changes without providing any kind of transition guide or tutorial. I spent way too much time just trying to figure out basic navigation that used to be second nature. The annual account recreation requirement makes it even worse - you'd think after all these years they could streamline that process instead of making it more complicated. I'm grateful for all the tips people have shared in this thread about finding the "Start New Tax Return" button and the manual save requirements. It's frustrating that we have to crowdsource solutions for what should be intuitive design, but at least we're all helping each other figure it out. The Free File system is still worth using for the cost savings, but they really need to work on the user experience for next year!

•I completely agree about the lack of transition guidance! As someone who's been relying on Free File Fillable Forms for years, this overhaul feels like they just threw us all into the deep end without any warning or support materials. What's particularly frustrating is that the old system worked so well - it was simple, intuitive, and reliable. I understand software needs updates, but this feels like they redesigned it just for the sake of change rather than actually improving the user experience. The fact that we're all having to share workarounds and tips in forum threads just to do basic navigation says everything about how poorly this rollout was handled. I'm definitely sticking with Free File since the alternative is paying for tax software, but I really hope they listen to all the feedback they're getting and make some usability improvements before next tax season. Thanks for validating that I'm not just being resistant to change - this really is unnecessarily complicated compared to what we had before!

I'm so relieved to find this thread! I thought I was losing my mind when I logged into Free File Fillable Forms this week. I've been using it for about 3 years and always appreciated how straightforward it was - just digital versions of the paper forms without all the hand-holding that paid software does. This year's interface change is incredibly jarring. I spent probably an hour just trying to find where to actually start my return. The new dashboard layout makes no sense compared to the clean, simple approach they had before. And don't get me started on having to create a new account again - it's 2025, why can't they figure out persistent logins? What really gets me is that they clearly put a lot of work into redesigning this system, but it feels like they never actually tested it with people who've been using the old version for years. All these changes seem to prioritize looking "modern" over being functional for existing users. Thanks to everyone sharing workarounds and tips here. It's frustrating that we need them, but at least we can help each other navigate this mess until hopefully they fix some of these usability issues!

•You're absolutely right about the lack of user testing! I'm new to Free File Fillable Forms this year (switching from paid software to save money), but even as a newcomer I can tell this interface is poorly designed. If it's this confusing for someone starting fresh, I can only imagine how frustrating it must be for people who were comfortable with the old system. The "modern" design definitely seems to prioritize aesthetics over functionality. I've noticed this trend with a lot of government websites lately - they update the look but somehow make basic tasks more complicated in the process. It's like they're trying to copy commercial tax software interfaces without understanding why people chose Free File Fillable Forms in the first place. At least we have this community helping each other figure things out! It shouldn't be necessary, but I'm grateful for all the practical tips people are sharing here.

I'm going through the exact same thing! I've been using Free File Fillable Forms for about 4 years now and this new interface has me completely stumped. What used to be a simple, straightforward process now feels like I'm learning an entirely new system from scratch. The most frustrating part for me is that I actually started my return last weekend, got about halfway through, and when I came back to finish it this week, I couldn't figure out how to get back to where I left off. The new navigation is so different that I'm not even sure if my work was saved properly. I really appreciate everyone sharing their tips about finding the "Start New Tax Return" button and the manual save requirements. It's ridiculous that we have to crowdsource basic navigation instructions, but at least we're all helping each other out. The free filing is still worth it compared to paying for tax software, but they really dropped the ball on the user experience this year. Has anyone found a way to view or recover partially completed returns in this new system? I'm worried I might have to start over completely, which would be incredibly frustrating after spending hours on it already.

•I ran into the same issue with recovering my partially completed return! What worked for me was logging back into my account and looking for a "Continue Return" or "Resume Return" option on the main dashboard. It's not super obvious - it was kind of buried in the middle section of the new layout. If you can't find that option, try clicking on "View Tax Returns" in the menu and see if your in-progress return shows up there. The new system seems to save drafts differently than before, so it might be listed under a different status than you'd expect. Worst case scenario, if you do have to restart, at least now we know about hitting that manual save button frequently and using the "Done" button when exiting forms. I feel your pain though - having to redo hours of work because of poor interface design is so frustrating. The old system may have looked dated, but at least it worked reliably!

I'm experiencing the exact same frustration! Been using Free File Fillable Forms for the past 3 years and this new interface completely threw me for a loop. What used to take me maybe 2-3 hours to complete now feels like it's going to take all weekend just because I can't figure out where anything is. The thing that really bugs me is that they clearly spent a lot of time and money redesigning this system, but it feels like they forgot about the people who actually use it regularly. The old interface wasn't fancy, but it was predictable and efficient. Now I'm spending more time trying to navigate the interface than actually filling out my tax forms. I'm definitely going to try some of the suggestions mentioned here, especially that taxr.ai tool that helps with navigation. At this point I'm willing to try anything that can help me get through this without pulling my hair out. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one struggling with this "upgrade"!

•I'm so glad I found this thread! I'm a newcomer to this community and to Free File Fillable Forms, and honestly, I was starting to think I was just not tech-savvy enough to figure this out. Reading everyone's experiences makes me realize it's not just me - this new interface really is as confusing as it seems. I switched to Free File this year to save money on tax prep fees, but after spending 3 hours last night just trying to figure out how to start my return, I was seriously considering going back to paid software. The tips everyone's sharing here are incredibly helpful though. I'm going to try that "Start New Tax Return" button location and definitely keep that manual save advice in mind. It's both frustrating and oddly comforting to see that even people who've been using this system for years are struggling with the changes. At least I know my confusion is justified! Thanks to everyone for sharing your workarounds and experiences - this community support is exactly what I needed to push through and figure this out.
