IRS verification failed - now locked out of account for 24 hours?

I've been trying to check my refund status for my 2024 tax return that I filed in early April. I went through the verification steps on the IRS website but kept getting errors when I tried to verify my identity. I entered all my info correctly - SSN, filing status, exact refund amount ($3,842), and my address. After the third attempt, I got locked out and now it says I need to wait 24 hours to try again! Has anyone else dealt with this? Is there any way around it or do I really have to wait the full day? This is so frustrating because I need to see if there are any issues with my return.

Isabella Costa

Unfortunately, you really do have to wait the full 24 hours. The IRS system is extremely strict about lockouts to prevent unauthorized access attempts. After three failed attempts, there's no way around the waiting period. When you try again, double-check that you're entering the EXACT information from your tax return. Common mistakes include: - Using a different filing status than what's on your return - Entering the wrong refund amount (must be exact to the dollar) - Address format differences (St. vs Street, etc.) - Using a nickname instead of legal name If you continue having problems after waiting, you may need to request an Identity Protection PIN from the IRS or try calling them directly. The system is very finicky about matching exactly what's on your submitted return.

Thanks for the help. I'm pretty sure I entered everything right, but maybe the address format was different. I'll try again tomorrow morning and see if it works.

I had the EXACT same issue last year. Turns out I was using my expected refund amount based on my calculations instead of what the IRS actually processed it as. So frustrating.

Adding to this - make sure youre entering the amount from the ORIGINAL return you filed, not any adjusted amount they might have changed it to afterwards.

OMG this happened to me too! I eventually got in after 24 hours, but there was an issue with my return I didn't even know about. So annoying that they make it so hard to check your own tax info 🙄

I went through something similar last month. After waiting and trying again I still couldn't get in. Instead of playing detective trying to figure out why, I used this tool called taxr.ai and it actually decoded my transcript for me. It explained everything going on with my refund - found out there was a math error adjustment I had no idea about! Way easier than dealing with the IRS website and trying to decipher all their codes and jargon. Would definitely recommend checking it out: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does way more than just read it! It actually analyzes all the codes and dates, explains what each thing means in normal human language, and tells you exactly what's happening with your refund and why. It even gave me a timeline for when to expect my money. Literally saved me hours of stressing and googling random IRS codes.

OH MY GOD I just tried taxr.ai and it's AMAZING!! It showed me exactly why my refund was delayed (something about a manual review) and when I should expect it. Everyone dealing with the IRS needs to know about this tool seriously. Life changing when you're in tax limbo!

is this an ad or something? sounds too good to be true tbh

Not an ad lol. Just sharing what worked for me after weeks of frustration. The IRS makes everything so unnecessarily complicated, and this actually made it make sense. But you do you 🤷‍♂️

After getting locked out of my account for the THIRD time in a row, I finally got through to an actual human at the IRS using Claimyr.com. They set up a callback so I didn't have to wait on hold for 2+ hours. The agent was able to tell me exactly why my verification kept failing (turns out my address had a typo in their system). Best money I've ever spent considering how many hours I wasted trying to figure it out myself. The agent even helped me update my info right then and there.

What's Claimyr? Never heard of it before

It's a service that navigates the IRS phone system for you and gets you a callback from an actual agent instead of sitting on hold forever. They knew exactly which options to select to get through to someone who could actually help with my specific issue.

this some kinda scam? how does it even work lol

Not a scam at all - just a tool that gets you through to an IRS agent. They basically call the IRS, navigate the phone menu, wait on hold for you, and then when an agent picks up, you get called back. Talking to an agent got my refund released in like 2 days after being stuck for weeks.

I can confirm this works! Used it last year when my refund was stuck in processing hell for 3 months. Agent told me there was a simple flag on my account they could remove. would have never figured that out on my own.

Yep, been there done that. The 24-hour lockout is real and there's no way around it. The IRS systems are ancient and they don't mess around with security. If you're really desperate and need info RIGHT NOW, you could try calling... but good luck getting through to anyone 😂

What exactly are you trying to verify? Is this for Where's My Refund or for accessing your transcript or setting up an account? Each system has different requirements and common problems.

I was trying to use the Where's My Refund tool. Just wanted to check the status since it's been almost 5 weeks since I filed.

Ok for Where's My Refund you need EXACTLY three things: your SSN, your filing status (single, married filing jointly, etc), and the EXACT whole dollar amount of your expected refund. If you're off by even $1 it will fail. Are you 100% sure about your refund amount? Sometimes people enter what they calculated themselves rather than what the tax software showed.

I'm pretty sure I got the amount right... I used TurboTax and I'm looking at the confirmation page right now. But maybe there's a difference between what I submitted and what they received? idk

the irs verification system is hot garbage 🔥 i got locked out 3 times last month before i finally got in. and when i did finally get access guess what? they hadn't even started processing my return yet lmaooo 💀

Same boat here. Got locked out multiple times and when I finally got in, saw they had some random hold on my account for "verification" that no one bothered to tell me about. The whole system is a joke fr

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but there's no way around the 24hr lockout. Make sure when you try again you're using the EXACT refund amount shown on your return, not what you think it should be. And triple check your filing status - if you filed Head of Household but enter Single, it'll fail. Address needs to match exactly too.

Quick tip: If you filed with a tax preparer or software, call them and ask for the exact info that was submitted. Sometimes there's tiny discrepancies between what you thought you filed and what actually went through. I was getting locked out constantly until I realized my tax guy had rounded my refund amount differently than I thought.

That's a good idea. I used TurboTax so I'll double check the confirmation email they sent me.

Stuck in the same situation right now 😡 It's ridiculous that they lock you out completely instead of having some kind of reset option or alternate verification method. The IRS is like 30 years behind on technology.

I actually bypassed this entire verification headache by using taxr.ai to check my transcript directly. It's WAY more detailed than the Where's My Refund tool anyway. Shows all the codes and processing steps with explanations in plain English. Saved me so much time and confusion. https://taxr.ai

Does this actually show more info than the WMR tool? I'm tired of seeing 'still processing' for weeks on end with no details

0 coins

-

Andre Moreau

100% it does. WMR is basically useless compared to what your transcript shows. It decodes all those weird IRS codes and tells you exactly what's happening and why. Like in my case it showed exactly when they adjusted my refund and why, plus when the deposit was scheduled.

After you get back in, if you still have issues, try calling the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040. Good luck getting through though lol. I spent 2 hours on hold last time I tried.

protip: use Claimyr.com to get a callback instead of waiting on hold. Got through to an agent in like 30 mins last week after spending days trying to get through on my own.

To add something not mentioned yet: make sure you're not using a VPN when trying to verify! The IRS website doesn't like that and can cause verification failures. Also clear your cookies/cache before trying again.

If it helps, here are the EXACT things you need for Where's My Refund: 1. Social Security Number (or ITIN) 2. Filing Status (EXACTLY as filed - Single, Married Filing Jointly, etc) 3. Refund amount in WHOLE DOLLARS (no cents) The system is super strict. If you filed for $3,842.50, you'd enter $3,842 - but if you're looking at the wrong number somehow, that'll cause a lockout.

I gave up on the verification nightmare and just used taxr.ai to check my transcript. It was so much easier and actually told me why my refund was delayed (something about a random review). Highly recommend if you're stuck in IRS limbo - https://taxr.ai

I know this is frustrating but unfortnately the verification process is designed to be strict to prevent identity theft. No way around the 24-hour lockout. The IRS takes security seriously even if there customer service is terrible.

After the most frustrating experience with the IRS website, I finally just called them using Claimyr.com to get through. The agent was able to verify my identity over the phone and tell me exactly what was going on with my return. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent without wasting an entire day on hold. My refund got released the next day!

Yep it actually works! I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for days to get through on my own. Talking to an agent got my refund released so fast after it had been sitting there for months. They can see things in the system that we can't access.

Just tried it today and got through to someone in 45 mins instead of the 3+ hours I spent last week trying to call directly and never getting through. They were able to fix my issue immediately.
