IRS undeliverable mail notification and 570/971 hold codes - will my refund be delayed after moving?

I logged into my IRS account yesterday at 8:31 and noticed two notifications on my dashboard - one about my refund status being available and another saying they're unable to deliver mail to my current address on file. The exact notification said "Refund Status Now Available - Check your refund status for up to the three most recent tax years." And below that was "Confirm Your Mailing Address - We are unable to deliver mail to your current address on file. Please review your mailing address and update if needed." When I checked my transcripts, I found codes 570 and 971 on there. I filed my taxes in early April and was expecting my refund by now (late May). Are these two things connected? Is the address issue what's causing the hold codes on my account? I moved last July but I made sure to update my address when I filed. Not sure why they're saying they can't deliver mail to me. In the "Records and Status" section of my account (sa.www4.irs.gov), I also noticed options to "Make a payment", "View Payment Options", and "View Payment Activity", but I'm not trying to make payments - I'm waiting for my refund! There was also a notification about "Go Paperless for Certain IRS Notices" where I can "Set your profile preferences to receive IRS notices online." Anyone else dealt with these notification issues? How long will this delay things? I'm concerned that if they can't deliver mail to me, I might miss important documents related to my refund. Should I update my address again even though I already did it when I filed?

Yes, these issues are connected. Code 570 is a refund hold and 971 indicates a notice has been generated. Since the IRS is showing they can't deliver mail to your address, they likely tried sending you a notice about the refund hold but it was returned undeliverable. You need to: 1. Update your address immediately through the IRS website or by filing Form 8822 2. Call the IRS to confirm what the notice was about - it could be identity verification, additional information needed, or a simple review 3. Check if your address matches exactly how USPS formats it (including abbreviations) The hold won't resolve until you address whatever issue the notice was trying to communicate. Unfortunately, this could delay your refund by several weeks or more depending on the underlying issue.

Thank you for this detailed info! I'm going to update my address right away. Do you know how long it typically takes for them to resend notices after fixing the address?

They typically won't automatically resend. That's why calling is important - you need to find out what the notice was about, then address that specific issue. Once resolved, refund processing usually takes 2-3 weeks.

Got it, I'll definitely call them. Appreciate the help!

I had the EXACT same issue last year. Took me months to get it resolved because I couldn't get anyone on the phone. The address thing is a major headache.

I had this exact problem last month. Used this incredible tool called taxr.ai and it was a game-changer! It analyzed my transcript and immediately detected that the address mismatch was causing my refund hold. It even gave me step by step instructions for fixing it correctly. Instead of spending weeks trying to decipher those codes and guessing what was wrong, I knew exactly what to do. I was able to update my address properly and my refund was released within 10 days! I've used it several times since for other tax questions - way better than posting here and getting 20 different opinions. Check it out at https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It does WAY more than just read transcripts. It actually analyzes everything - finding patterns and issues that most people (even tax pros) miss. It explained exactly why my 570/971 codes appeared and what specific steps I needed to take. Even told me which form to use and how to fill it out correctly. Best part is it's super fast - no waiting for responses like on here.

Just tried it and WOW - mind blown! This is exactly what I needed. It found issues with my transcript I had no idea existed and explained everything in plain English. Already fixed my address problem and it's showing me how to track when my refund should be released. Everyone dealing with the IRS needs to know about this tool!

is it free tho? sounds like another scam tbh 🙄

0 coins

Not free but worth every penny considering it saved me from waiting months for my refund. And definitely not a scam - it solved my problem in minutes after I spent weeks getting nowhere with the IRS.

I had the same address problem with those exact codes. After trying to call IRS for two weeks and never getting through, I used the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) and actually got a live IRS agent on the phone! They explained that my notice was about identity verification, but was returned as undeliverable. Agent helped me verify my identity over the phone and update my address properly. Refund was released 8 days later. Honestly saved me months of waiting and confusion - talking to an actual human at the IRS made all the difference.

Does this really work? I've been calling the IRS for 3 weeks straight and keep getting the "call volume too high" message.

100% worked for me! I was super skeptical too after wasting hours listening to that stupid IRS hold music. The app basically navigates the IRS phone tree for you and holds your place in line. When they got an agent, I got a call back on my phone and was connected directly. Took less than 2 hours total when I had been trying for weeks on my own.

how much did it cost?

0 coins

I don't remember exactly, but whatever it was, it was the best money I've ever spent considering it got my $3400 refund released. Would have paid double honestly after all the frustration of trying to call myself.

the IRS is a joke. i had similar issues last year. they kept saying my address was wrong even tho i literally confirmed it with them THREE TIMES. took 6 months to get my refund 🤡

yes this is definitely related! the 971 code means they sent you a notice. the 570 is a hold code. since they're saying they cant deliver mail to you that means whatever notice they tried to send you about the hold got returned to them. you need to update your address ASAP and then probably call them to find out what the notice was about.

Thanks for confirming. Have you ever experienced this? How long did it take to resolve after updating your address?

yeah it happened to me in 2024. took about a month after i updated my address but that was mostly cuz i couldnt get ahold of anyone. if you can actually talk to someone it should be faster

Pro tip: Format your address EXACTLY how USPS does it. I spent weeks dealing with this because my apartment was listed as "Unit 4B" on my taxes but USPS formats it as "APT 4B" - this tiny difference caused my mail to be undeliverable according to the IRS system. Go to USPS.com and use their address lookup tool to see exactly how they format your address.

This is really helpful! I'll check that right now. I did abbreviate my street name when I filed so that could be the issue.

0 coins

This is so stupid though. Why does the IRS system care about this kind of formatting? USPS still delivers the mail either way.

It's because the IRS validates addresses against the USPS database. If it doesn't match EXACTLY, their system flags it as potentially undeliverable. It's ridiculous but that's government systems for ya 🤷‍♂️

I work with tax resolution cases. This is a common issue. The 570 code is a temporary hold on your refund, and the 971 indicates they've issued a notice explaining why. Since they can't deliver mail to your address, you won't receive the explanation. Most likely scenarios: 1) They need to verify your identity 2) There's a math error they found 3) They're reviewing your credits/deductions. Call the IRS directly and explain you have undeliverable mail and need to know what notice they tried to send regarding your 570/971 codes.

Sorry to hijack, but do you know if having a PO Box causes these issues? I'm using one this year and worried about similar problems.

PO Boxes are fine as long as they're properly registered with USPS and you format it correctly on your return. Make sure it's "PO BOX 123" not "P.O. Box 123" or other variations.

Ugh dealing with this RIGHT NOW. My transcript has had 570/971 for almost 2 months. Called and they said they tried sending me something but it was returned. The kicker? I haven't moved in 5 years and get all other mail just fine. The IRS systems are completely broken.

0 coins

check if someone filed a change of address form with USPS without your knowledge. happened to me once when i had an identity theft issue and suddenly irs said they couldnt deliver mail to me. might be worth checking your credit report too just to be safe.

I hadn't even thought of that possibility! I'll definitely check. Is there a way to see if someone filed a change of address in my name?

0 coins

you can go to your local post office with ID and ask them to check if any change of address forms were submitted for your name. they can tell you what address it was changed to as well.

This happened to my cousin last year. Someone had stolen his identity and filed a fake return. Definitely check your credit reports ASAP!

I just fixed this issue last week! The weird thing was my address was correct in some IRS systems but not others. Had to call (finally got through after 2.5 hours) and they told me there was a glitch that happens sometimes when you e-file. They fixed my address and reissued the notice. Took about 2 weeks after that to get my refund. Check your transcript daily - look for code 571 which reverses the 570 hold.

•

Thank you! I'll keep an eye out for that 571 code. Did they tell you what the notice was about in your case?

0 coins

Yeah in my case it was just a random review of my earned income credit. Nothing was wrong, they just selected mine for verification. But once they couldn't deliver the notice asking for verification, everything stalled until I called.

0 coins

i had the SAME issue and wasnt able to make any progress until I went in person to my local IRS office (had to make appointment). Turns out some scammer had changed my address without my knowledge! They fixed it on the spot and I got my refund 10 days later.

Try checking your transcript again for cycle code and look at the dates for those 570/971 codes. If they share the same cycle code and date, it's usually just a review that will resolve itself. If different dates, could be more serious.

0 coins

Natalie Khan

•

They do have the same date! Both show 05/15/2025. Does that mean it'll resolve automatically even with the address issue?

0 coins

Not necessarily with the address issue. Same date is usually good news, but since they can't deliver mail to you, you still need to fix that ASAP. The notice could be something simple they need from you.

One thing NO ONE has mentioned yet - if you used a tax preparer, check if they accidentally put THEIR address instead of yours on any forms. My preparer did this last year and it caused this exact problem. The IRS was trying to send mail to their office instead of my home!

0 coins

I know it seems unrelated, but do you have any outstanding federal student loans? I had this same situation and it turned out they were holding my refund for student loan offset, but couldn't deliver the notice telling me about it. Just another possibility to consider.

I do actually! They're in good standing though. Can they still hold your refund even if you're not in default?

0 coins

If you've missed even one payment in recent months they can. Also if you were on a covid forbearance that ended and maybe missed the restart. Worth checking your loan status to be sure.

FYI those codes are super common right now. The IRS is doing more verification this year because of all the fraud. 570 & 971 usually just mean they're double-checking something. But definitely fix your address issue! You can do it online through the IRS portal in about 2 minutes.

A little paranoid maybe, but worth checking - is someone filing fraudulent tax returns in your name? If someone did that and changed your address with the IRS, you might want to request an Identity Protection PIN from the IRS for future filings.

This!!! happened to my brother two years in a row. definitely get an IP PIN regardless, its easy to do online and gives peace of mind.

I went through this exact same situation a few months ago! The 570/971 codes with undeliverable mail notification are definitely connected. In my case, the IRS had tried to send me a CP05 notice requesting additional verification of my identity, but it bounced back because of a formatting issue with my apartment number. Here's what worked for me: 1. I updated my address through the IRS online account (make sure it matches USPS formatting exactly) 2. Called the IRS using the practitioner priority line early in the morning (around 7 AM) - had better luck getting through 3. The agent was able to tell me what the original notice was about and handled the verification over the phone My refund was released about 12 days after that call. The key is getting someone on the phone who can actually see what notice they tried to send you. Don't just update your address and wait - you need to proactively find out what they were trying to communicate. Also, keep checking your transcript daily for that 571 code that reverses the 570 hold. That's your signal that things are moving again. Good luck!
