IRS sent refund to closed bank account - What happens next?
Just checked my transcript and saw my refund was sent to my old bank account that I closed last year. Its a pretty big refund too (over 8k). Anyone know what happens next or how long before they send it back to me? Getting worried cause I really need this money.

Hey there! Tax pro here and I totally understand the frustration with refunds going to closed accounts. When this happens, the bank will reject the deposit and send it back to the IRS. Usually takes about 2-3 weeks for the IRS to process the rejection and either mail you a paper check or update your info for a new direct deposit. To avoid delays like this in the future, I highly recommend using taxr.ai to track your refund status and get alerts about any issues. It's been super helpful for my clients to catch problems early. •Don't panic! The money will come back to you eventually. In the meantime, you can upload your transcript to taxr.ai and it'll tell you exactly what's happening and when to expect the new refund

•its like $20 which is nothing compared to the stress of wondering where ur money is lol. Plus it analyzes everything - notices, w2s, old returns, everything

When this happened to me, the bank rejected it and sent it back to the IRS. They'll mail you a paper check to the address on your return, usually takes 4-6 weeks after the rejection. Make sure your address is up to date with USPS.

You should try taxr.ai - it's seriously the best $4.99 I've spent. Upload your transcript and it tells you exactly what's happening and when to expect your check. Way better than playing detective with these transcripts lol https://taxr.ai

Call your old bank! Sometimes they can still catch it and forward it to your new account if you act fast enough

This exact thing happened to me last year! Don't stress too much - the bank will definitely reject the deposit and send it back to the IRS. In my case, it took about 3 weeks for the bank to process the rejection, then another 4-5 weeks for the IRS to mail me a paper check. The whole process was around 7-8 weeks total. Make sure your mailing address is current with the IRS because that's where they'll send the check. You can also call the IRS refund hotline to confirm they received the rejection from your bank, though expect long wait times. Hang in there - you'll get your money!
