IRS refund scheduled for March 5 - will 5-day early deposit include weekends? (Head of Household)

Just checked my refund status on IRS2Go this morning. My refund is scheduled to be sent to my bank by March 5, 2025. If my refund is not credited to my account by March 10, 2025, I should check with my bank to see if it has been received. The IRS2Go app is showing all three status indicators filled in: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent. I'm filing as Head of Household this year, and I paid for that 5-day early deposit feature with my tax filing software. The status just updated today (Monday) at around 11:49, and I can see the complete message that says "Your tax refund is scheduled to be sent to your bank by March 5, 2025. If your refund is not credited to your account by March 10, 2025, check with your bank to see if it has been received." There's also a note saying "Please Note: For refund information, please continue to check here, or visit the Refunds page on IRS.gov. Updates to refund status are made no more than once a day." So I'm trying to figure out when I'll actually get my money with this 5-day early deposit feature. Do weekends count for the 5-day early deposit calculation? Since the IRS says my refund will be sent by March 5 and to wait until March 10 before contacting my bank, I'm wondering if my early deposit feature means I could see it sooner than the 5th. Has anyone used this feature before with similar dates? Does Head of Household filing status affect the timing at all?

Philip Cowan

The 5-day early deposit feature is actually something your bank offers, not the IRS. When the IRS says they're sending your refund on April 12th, they're initiating an ACH transfer on that date. The 5-day early feature means your bank will front you the money before they actually receive it from the IRS. Weekends DO count in this calculation. So if your DDD (direct deposit date) is April 12th, and you have 5-day early deposit, you could potentially see it as soon as April 7th. However, banks handle this differently. Some will process it immediately including weekends, others only count business days. Also, keep in mind that the IRS sometimes releases funds earlier than the stated DDD. Many people see their refunds 1-2 days before the official date even without early deposit features.

Thank u so much for the explanation! Makes way more sense now. So I might see it as early as today potentially since my DDD is the 12th?

Possibly today or tomorrow! Just depends on your bank. Let us know when it hits!

My bank (Wells Fargo) only counts business days for their early deposit feature, so just fyi if you have them

Chase doesn't even tell you they're fronting the money they just deposit it when they feel like it 🙄 never know when it's coming

So I had this exact same issue trying to figure out when my refund would actually hit my account. I spent hours trying to dig through IRS transcript codes, calling my bank, everything. Ended up using this tool taxr.ai that just scanned my transcript and told me exactly when to expect my deposit based on my bank and the codes. It's insanely good! I use it every week now to check for updates instead of going crazy refreshing WMR and trying to decode everything myself. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It basically analyzes all the codes on your transcript that the IRS doesn't explain clearly, and gives you accurate predictions. I was skeptical at first but it predicted my DD date perfectly, even accounting for the bank processing time. EVERYONE should be using this - so much better than stressing over cycles and playing detective with transcript codes!

Actually it just analyzes IRS data - gives you straight answers instead of the confusing mess of codes. Saved me so much time and stress during this refund season. Wish I knew about it sooner!

I was in the same boat with trying to figure out when my refund would hit with early deposit. After days of frustration calling the IRS (and never getting through), I found this app called Claimyr and actually got to speak with a real IRS agent who answered all my questions about my early deposit timing. Got a callback in under 30 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks on my own. claimyr.com was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my questions answered directly instead of guessing!

wait what? an app that gets you through to the IRS? that sounds too good to be true

I thought the same thing but it actually works. they navigate the phone tree for you and get you in the callback queue. Talking to an actual agent cleared everything up in 5 minutes after weeks of confusion. The agent even released a hold on my refund I didn't know about!

Can it get you through to any department? I need to talk to someone about my penalty notice.

Yep! You choose which department when you set it up. My friend used it for the collections department last month.

The weekends DO count for the direct deposit but NOT for the "check with your bank by" date. So if ur DDD is April 12 and you have the 5-day early feature, you should see it around April 7. The April 17 date they mention is just saying "if you don't have it by 5 business days after the DDD, call your bank" because that would be unusual. It has nothing to do with the early deposit feature.

I had a DDD of March 20 and paid for the 5-day early feature. My money showed up on March 17 (only 3 days early). I think it depends on how quickly the IRS actually initiates the transfer. They say April 12 but might not send until April 11. The 5 days is a maximum not a guarantee.

The IRS2Go app is showing you the official dates but the truth is refunds almost always come earlier. My DDD was supposed to be March 30 but it hit my account on March 27 even without any early deposit feature. The IRS builds in buffer time. Check your transcript if you can - the 846 code date is more accurate than what WMR or IRS2Go shows.

If you paid for the 5-day early deposit through a tax prep company like TurboTax or H&R Block, realize what you're actually paying for is a loan against your expected refund. They're not actually getting your money any faster from the IRS. They're fronting you the money and then keeping your actual refund when it arrives. This is why they can offer it "early".

Brielle Johnson

Thats not entirely accurate. The 5-day early feature is usually through the bank account they setup to receive your refund, not a loan product. The loans are different and usually called "refund advances" with different terms.

You're right, I was thinking of the refund advance loans. My mistake. The 5-day early deposit is just a bank feature.

I went through this last week - DDD was April 2, paid for early feature, got my money on March 30. So in my case they counted weekend days. But my sister had the exact same setup and didn't get hers until April 1. I think it also depends on what time of day the IRS initiates the transfer and how your specific bank handles it.

Anyone else notice how the IRS is ALWAYS dropping refunds on fridays now?? Feels like they're deliberately making us wait through weekends. My last 3 refunds have all had friday DDDs 😡

0 coins

-

Mary Bates

YES!! My theory is they do it deliberately so fewer people can call with questions since their phone lines are closed weekends

Nah its just how their processing cycles work. They finalize batches at end of week.

the 5-day early deposit is honestly a scam. i paid for it last year and my refund came the same day as my brother who didn't pay for it (same bank). depends more on your bank's processing than anything else.

Not a scam just depends on ur bank. Some actually do it some don't. Chime and Varo are good about it. Big banks not so much

GUYS CHECK YOUR BANKS NOT REDDIT!!! I literally JUST got my deposit like 20mins ago even though my DDD wasn't until the 10th! The IRS sends out batches early sometimes! Go check your accounts!!

Head of Household here too. My experience has been that the 5-day early thing works like this: - If DDD is April 12 - IRS actually sends funds April 10-11 (they're often early) - Bank might show pending deposit April 10-11 - With 5-day early feature, money available April 7-8 They definitely count weekend days in the 5 days. But the catch is that the IRS rarely sends exactly on the DDD - sometimes earlier, sometimes a bit later.

Certified tax preparer here. The confusion comes from mixing up two different systems. The IRS provides a Direct Deposit Date (DDD) - that's when they're scheduled to release the funds to your bank. Separately, some banks/financial products offer "early access" to direct deposits (not just tax refunds). How they calculate the 5 days varies by institution. For most accurate info, check your account transcript if possible - look for the 846 refund issued code with a date. That's when the IRS actually sent it.

Just wanna say F*** the IRS for making this so complicated. WHY can't they just tell us exactly when the money will be in our accounts instead of this convoluted system?? 🤬

0 coins

-

Isaiah Sanders

because the banking system is a nightmare and they can't control when your specific bank processes the payment after they send it

You can call your bank directly and ask them about their specific policy for the early deposit feature. Some count business days only, others count calendar days. The IRS message is completely separate from your bank's early deposit feature.
