IRS Website Showing Error Code 6000 When Trying to Access Where's My Refund Tool
Been trying to check my refund status all morning but the IRS website keeps giving me an error. Tried multiple browsers and cleared my cache but still nothing. Anyone else having this issue right now? Every time I try to use the Where's My Refund tool on the IRS website, I keep getting this error message: "Error Something Went Wrong A condition has been identified that's preventing your access to this service. Please contact the Help Desk at 888-841-4648. Error code: 6000 TID: 2d11a561-db79-47ee-9e3a-50f61c47c9f1 VIEW YOUR ALTERNATIVES" This is on the official IRS website (sa.www4.irs.gov) which has the "An official website of the United States Government" header at the top with the IRS logo. I've tried on Chrome, Firefox, and even Microsoft Edge, cleared all my cookies and browsing data, but I still get the same error. Has anyone else encountered this Error code 6000 specifically? Did calling that help desk number actually resolve anything? I filed over two weeks ago and was hoping to check if my refund is being processed. I'm getting really frustrated because I need this money soon and can't even check the status.

Its a known issue - IRS is doing system maintenance today. Should be back up by 6pm EST according to their status page. They always do this during peak filing season 🙄

Instead of constantly checking the website and getting frustrated, I started using taxr.ai to track my refund status. It analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly whats going on. Worth the $4.99 honestly https://taxr.ai

•How accurate is it? Does it actually tell you more than the where's my refund tool?

•WAY more accurate. It breaks down every code and gives you actual dates. Been using it for weeks

Pro tip: Best times to check are early morning (5-7am) or late night (after 11pm). Less traffic on servers means better chance of getting in

I've been dealing with this same error code 6000 for the past few days! Super frustrating when you're trying to track your refund. I called that help desk number (888-841-4648) yesterday and they basically just told me it's a "technical issue" and to try again later. Not very helpful tbh. At least now I know it's not just me having problems with their system.

•Ugh same experience with that help desk! They basically just read me the same error message I was already seeing on screen. At least we know it's widespread and not something wrong with our accounts specifically. Hopefully they get it sorted out soon 🤞

I had the exact same error code 6000 issue yesterday! What worked for me was switching to incognito/private browsing mode and then accessing the Where's My Refund tool. Something about the cached data was causing conflicts. Also make sure you're using the direct link: https://sa.www4.irs.gov/irfof-wmr/login - sometimes the main IRS page redirects weird. Hope this helps while you wait for their maintenance to finish!

•Thanks for the incognito tip! Just tried it and it actually worked for me too. Weird that cached data would cause that specific error code but I'm not complaining. Finally got to check my refund status after being locked out all morning 🙌

Just wanted to add that I experienced this exact same Error code 6000 issue last week! What finally worked for me was using a VPN to connect through a different location. Seems like certain IP ranges or geographic areas might be getting blocked during their maintenance windows. I switched my VPN to a server in Texas and was able to access the Where's My Refund tool immediately. Might be worth trying if you have a VPN service available. Also, @Zara Perez is right about the incognito mode - that's been helping a lot of people bypass the cached data issues.

•That's really interesting about the VPN trick! I wouldn't have thought of that but it makes sense if they're doing regional maintenance or have IP blocks in place. I don't have a VPN but maybe I can try using my phone's hotspot to get a different IP address. Thanks for sharing that workaround @StarSeeker! Between the incognito mode and VPN suggestions, hopefully one of these will work for people still having issues.
