IRS Tax Penalty Affecting Refund - When Will I Get My Money Back?
Hey everyone, I'm dealing with a tax penalty that's affecting my refund. The IRS took money out due to this penalty, and now I'm trying to figure out when I'll get my refund. Has anyone else been in this situation? Any advice on how to handle it or what questions I should ask when I finally get through to an agent?

Ugh, been there done that. The IRS can be such a pain to deal with. Have you tried calling them directly? It might take forever to get through, but it's probably your best bet for getting specific info about your case.

Yeah, I've been trying to call but the wait times are insane. It's so frustrating š¤

Pro tip: call right when they open in the morning. You might have better luck getting through!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Jc9x-gysK0

I was skeptical at first too, but it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration.

How long did it take for them to get someone on the line?

It took about 2 hours, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music. They just called me when an agent was ready.

Here's what you need to know about tax penalties and refunds: ā¢ First, identify the specific penalty. Common ones include failure-to-file, failure-to-pay, or underpayment penalties. ā¢ The penalty amount is usually deducted from your refund automatically. ā¢ Refund timelines vary, but with penalties, it can take longer due to additional processing. ā¢ You can request a penalty abatement if you have a reasonable cause. ā¢ Always ask for a detailed breakdown of the penalty and how it affects your refund amount. When you talk to an agent, ask: 1. What specific penalty was applied? 2. Can you explain how this penalty affected my refund amount? 3. What's the current status of my refund? 4. Are there any steps I can take to expedite the process? 5. Am I eligible for a penalty abatement? Hope this helps! Let us know how it goes.

Wow, this is super helpful! Thanks for taking the time to write all this out. I'll definitely use these questions when I talk to an agent.

The IRS is such a joke. They take our money no problem but when it comes to giving refunds, suddenly everything moves at a snail's pace. ššø

To be fair, they're understaffed and overworked. The system needs an overhaul.

I had a similar issue last year. Turned out I had made a mistake on my return that triggered the penalty. Double-check your forms if you haven't already!

Thanks for the heads up. I'll take another look at my forms. Did you end up having to file an amended return?

Yeah, I did. It was a pain, but it sorted everything out in the end. Took about 2 months to process tho.

Have you considered hiring a tax professional? They might be able to help you navigate this and potentially get the penalty removed.

I've thought about it, but I'm worried about the cost. Any idea how much that usually runs?

It varies, but many offer free consultations. Might be worth it if they can save you money in the long run.
